Sony RDR-GX315 and iLink (firewire) input problem

Anyone having challenges with smooth recording via firewire to their GX315?

Here's the stats I've found on my new machine.

When recording from my Sony TRV22 video camera (miniDV tape):

Recording from:

1) Analogue---GX315 records great
2) S-Link---GX315 records great

3) iLink (firewire...iEEE1394) the recording is jerky...choppy....jumping...non-uniform for about the first 2 minutes, then it smooths out and looks great. The sound also gets off track for that first couple of minutes.

I've been chatting with Sony's Product Specialist about this. He's also stumped and asked that I send the unit in for a look-see.

Instead, I went in to where I bought the unit and just swapped it out (perhaps I got a lemon?). Well, this new one has the exact same problem. Everything is good....except when I try to input via firewire.

Any knowledgable input is eagerly awaited. (almost bald here!)

After -much- research, both on the internet (forums, discussions, Consumer Reports) and talking with Sony Product Specialists...I returned my Sony RDR-GX315 and bought the older model Sony RDR-GX300. Brought it home tonight.

I have to say, the 300 is SO much better quality. The picture is crisper than the 315. The inputs are much more nicely arranged (in back as well as front). There are so many options to adjust contrast and balance on the 300 (the 315 lacks this ability).

Too bad Sony went the wrong way with the 315 in dumbing down its quality and workmanship. This 300 will last me a very long time.

Oh and btw, the 300 is no longer in production but you can still find it. For those of you in the Southern California area the Montclair "Best Buy" still has 15 new ones (unopened) sitting on their shelves.

From what I hear, they went to Samtrash to make the new recorders, thus the inferior machine.

Yeah, I brought this up to one Sony (who called himself) "Product Specialist". He was speechless when I brought up the Toshiba/Samsung components.

He had gone so far to say that the reason the firewire wasn't transfering smoothly was that the 'copyright protection inhibited fault free transference'....from my -own- miniDV camera...my own filming of my friends in action. He went on to say that ALL firewire transmissions were this way (in ALL makes and models of DVD Recorders of ANY brand).

That's where I lost it and informed him that the GX7 (and many makes and models of other brands that my friends have and produce on) were fault free in everything -they- did.

I think I completely over awed him. ;^)
