I am an idiot but please help. I have Direct Tv (standard receiver) but I now have a nice toshiba 46' HDTV. Obviously I cannot get HD quality unless I upgrade to a HD Dish/receiver. However, can I get anything better than 480i?? Even my DVD player (progressive scan) does not look that good and I just bought nice component cables for it. Thoughts??
there are some dvd players out that upconvert a 480 resolution picture to 480p, 720p, 1080i, and maybe even 1080p, but it is still not a true HD signal.
best bet, upgrade to the HD receiver. HD broadcasts from Discovery, ESPN, and others (not sure of DirecTV's HD programming) are well worth the upgrade.
Some time this year DVD players with Blu-Ray and HD DVD capability will output at true HD quality, provided the discs you use were recorded in HD.
