Can I record digital channels with a DVD Recorder?

I just got an HDTV and I love the quality of the digital channels that I can get with the TV's built-in digital/analog tuner. The problem is, my VCR could only record the analog signals, which obviously aren't as good as the digital signal, regardless if it is HD or not. That is why I bought a DVD recorder/DVR, so I could record the digital channels. However, the DVD recorder seems to be working just like the VCR, it has a built-in analog tuner which is all I am able to get on the recorder. The instructions on the recorder say that it can record from a set top box but my TV's tuner is internal and there is no output on the TV, only inputs. So, is there any way to get the DVD recorder to record the digital signal from the TV's internal tuner? It seems like if I had an external digital tuner, it would have outputs and would work but I dont want to pay $200 for an extra tuner. I know that you can't get HD quality on DVD but can you at least record the digital channels? Thanks.

Yes and no. Yes they can be recorded if they can be converted to analog first and no because DVD recorders, just like VCR's only record analog inputs.

It is unusual for a new HDTV not to have an S-Video output.
