Anonymous | "At least Sony has the cojones to admit technical problems and fix them. " You on crack??? Sony NEVER admitted the problems with the WEGA line (36" and 36" XBR) sets. Faulty board (Red overdriven), bad cap ($40 part..$200 labor), Screen clipping, and left2right brightness. Who in their right mind would design a set that weighs over 270lbs and no handles? Then have salesfolks tell ya "They dropped it in shipping..did you insure it?" The sets are too heavy and SONY quality control almost non-existant. Sony sells its name. Just look at the warranties! Sony has 90 Day labor. Hitachi and Panasonic over a year. More on parts. Don't even start me on Plasma sets (Line up the Jones's...or should I say Lemmings?) After reading this forum, avsforum, and epinions, I think its clear, folks are being duped for BIG bucks and are the "beta" testers for substandard technology. I will bet that places like CC, Bestbuy, Sears..., will start complaining to vendors as they are amassing many defective units. $500 for a TV set is one thing...but $3000+ for a set that whines, clicks, hums, arcs, blurs, bulbs blow ($300 a pop..no pun), resolution is average and colour issues...everyone should send a message buy NOT buying anything for the next 6 months. Shame on Sony. Shame on Samsung. And where are the DVI-equipped receivers, changers and players? |
NoMoreHitachis Unregistered guest | Recent purchase of 50v500a with 2 major complaints. 1. Fan noise (common complaint) 2. right speaker grill has a pattern of 24 small blocks, extremely annoying to see on big $$$$ LCD. Does anybody else have 50v500 with pattern showing on the speaker material? Hitachi's response, this is normal & not covered by the manufactures warranty, I have never seen a photo in any ad's displaying this "normal" feature. Hitachi needs some serious training in "customer service". I received the same answer after talking to a so called supervisor. I'm totally unhappy with the response from Hitachi, and would not suggest purchasing any of their products. |
New member Username: TriplesevnPost Number: 1 Registered: 02-2004 | I ordered or should I say pre ordered the Sony KF50 this week. The salesman from PlasmaBay.com advised me of a 3 week wait on these TV's. Today at Circuit City, I was admiring the Hitachi 50. When I asked the sales person about it then referred to my recent order, I was told that the wait for the Sony was not 3 weeks but 3 MONTHS! Sony has BULB circuiting issues and has advised all dealers not to expect shipments for 3 months. To my surprise, I was absolutely shocked! But I am happy as I think the Hitachi is a better TV and will be purchasing my 50 inch tomorrow using the great advice from all of you here. I live very near the ShopSunshine store in NYC. I would buy the TV from them but they do not have any left in stock so I will head to CC and Sears tomorrow and bargain with them. Hopefully I can get the matching deal. I printed up the Sears policy on Price Matching too just in case. Hope it works out and when I get mine, I'll be sure to come back with Positive feedback about my new set. Hopefully.... 777 |
Mike123 Unregistered guest | No picture, just vertical bars. Sound is OK. Power off the system completely and leave it off for few minutes; power it on and the picture comes back. Has anyone faced similar problem with 50V500A? Just checking, I am going to call for service anyway. thanks for your help. |
chas50v500 Unregistered guest | I sent Hitachi the email with all the fan noise clips from this forum. I got a phone call and email from Hitachi. We're making arrangements to have a different repairman come out to the house and check the noise level. I'm not sure how this will work out, but I'm hoping it helps. It appeared to me that they are willing to work things out. I did not receive any additional info regarding this being a major problem. I didn't really expect an explanation because it does not seem to be a major problem throughout the line. At least they now know this thread exsists. I had a friend over and he was totally amazed at the HD picture. He'd seen HD demos units in the store, but never in a home. It is a really great tv set and while I can live with the noise if I have to, I'd like it to match the same low level in the store. One thing that did came to mind....my 50V500 is located approx 12-14" from a bare wall. I'm wondering if this adds to the problem. Any comments? |
ARE ESS Unregistered guest | Bought my 60V500 from Sears last week after vacillating between Samsung DLP and Sony LCD models. The wait is 4 weeks, with delivery scheduled on 13 March. I am a little nervous after reading all the postings of the problems with xxV500 series. Just before I bought the set from Sears, I had gone to CC to compare the Sony and the Hitachi side-by-side. The first day Sony was out with a blown bulb and next day the Hitachi with "color problems". Having spent ~$4300 (after taxes and 5 yrs warranty), I wonder if I should have waited for things to stabilize with this technology! Could anyone offer me a shoulder? |
New member Username: TriplesevnPost Number: 3 Registered: 02-2004 | I went today to buy my 50v500 from Sears or CC. I used the "Match Price" deal and I didn't get anywhere with Sears. They told me that Shopsunshine was not a competitor they except. I showed them their own statement that I printed up from the web too. They still wouldn't sell to me for the $2699 price with 10% in diff. (BJ's, CostCo, BB, CC, JR Richards, and a few others only) I then went to CC. I spoke directly with the Store Manager as he was about the only one on the floor! He too wouldn't match the price because they do not consider them a direct competitor. I then showed him their website statement and he then began to work with me but very little. After this, I then brought up that another CC was selling the system for $2889. He would only match the other CC store's price and give me a $200 dollar gift card. I found out a bit later though that the gift card was coming with the purchase anyway. And...I am only getting a $200 dollar gift card instead of the $300 he originally said as the price they sold it to me for was below the $2999 min for the $300 gift card! In the end, I ended up paying $3189 with tax & S&H! No warrenty either but the Hitachi one. So I have 30 days to buy it which I will be doing next pay day. I don't think I got such a good deal but neither of the 2 Sears stores or 2 CC stores I visited would work with me to the extent I was looking for. When it arrives tomorrow, I hope it was worth the DAY LONG HIKE everywhere to get as good a deal as I got. |

Anonymous | This Sears is in San Antonio. They had it on sale for 3134.99 for Presidents Day Sale, another store had it on sale for lower so they price matched it and then I had a 10% coupon that Sears had sent for moving into the area. I saw in the paper that they're having 10% off sale now thru Sat anyways. This was the 3rd Sears we dealt with & the guy just worked with us, b/c the other 2 Sears wouldn't budge on price at all. SO its all in who your salesperson is, like other people have said before. Harley, you're in NY anyways right? So the Sears there should match the ShopSunshine store b/c they are a physical store. Go to another Sears or talk to manager. |
Anonymous | Just had my 50v500a (not sure of the difference between "A", and "non A" sets) delivered last Thursday. Finally ended up getting it from Ultimate Electronics. Had them PM Sears, after Sears couldn't deliver the TV as promissed. Originally got a price from a local store in St. Louis of $2970, then I had Sears price match it, + 10% of the difference, +10% off of that for using their credit card. Brought the TV price to $2644.28, + $40.00 delivery, + $399.99 for a 3 year service plan. Total before tax $3084.37 - 12 months free financing. Sears kept pushing my delivery date back, so I had Ultimate price match the Sears TV price, + they has 24 months free financing, + they had a 5 year warranty for $349.95. Total @ Ultimate, with delivery, and 5 year plan - $3033.85 + tax. My set does have some fan noise, but I haven't made up my mind if it's enought to complain about. If the set has the volume above 14, it's not noticable. Picture is great, especially with my progressive scan DVD player. I'm waiting to get a Dish Network HD 811 receiver, but they are back-ordered through Dish.. I pre-ordered one, to take advantage of their offer for existing customers. I'm able to upgrade for $200.00. I've been waiting almost 5 weeks for the 811 receiver, luckily I was somewhat proactive in ordering ahead of time, and should have it in another week or so. |
cttompkins Unregistered guest | I bought a 50v500a this past weekend, and I am also bothered by the fan noise. Reading the posts here and from other sites (regarding other TV's, such as Sony), it seems that this problem is pretty common. Since some people don't seem to have a problem with the noise, I am wondering if it is caused by the way the TV is set up in the room. My TV is kitty cornered against a couple of wood paneled walls. I am thinking that the fan noise is bouncing off of those walls which makes it sound louder. I think I will look into some acoustic tiles or something to put on the walls behind the TV. |
New member Username: BigedPost Number: 4 Registered: 01-2004 | I know there's been a lot of postings concerning fan noise. As a 2 month 50V500 owner, I'll tell you that excessive fan noise is not the standard with this equipment. I will admit that the first model I had did manifest excessive fan sound ("high pitch"). But I had CC come and exchange it (because of a screen problem) and the model I have now is not loud at all (below the noise of my refrigerator in the next room). I was highly concerned, like many of you have expressed, before I bought the Hit. But now that I have a very acceptable LCD fan sound, the 50V500 has no peer. My recommendation is to have the vendor you bought it from replace the entire unit. This is probably a QC problem at the factory (pretty unsat I agree) but the overall design is sound. Replace your unit (or fan) and enjoy. There's really no peer short of Plasma!!! |
Bronze Member Username: SeekerPost Number: 17 Registered: 12-2003 | I think MELL has the perfect way of measuring the fan noise...if it's louder than your refrigerator, it's not the way it should be. Ours is also two months old and the fan is not noticeable unless you put your ear by the back (when the normal sound is on) or when it is turned off and cooling down. The 50V500 is really great and there's no reason for anyone not to be able to enjoy it because of a faulty fan |
Anonymous Guy Unregistered guest | The 50v500 has huge troubles. If you have a set without the noise, you are lucky. Everyone I know that bought one has returned it. The fan noise really manifested itself on my set in the 4th week (before then it wasn't worse than my frig). I got a replacement 50v500 from CC, and the noise started on the first day. Now I sincerely believe that if you hold onto one, you are holding on to a ticking time bomb. |
New member Username: BigedPost Number: 6 Registered: 01-2004 | Anonymous Guy, There's way too many people in this discussion that are happy with their unit for it not to be just my unique situation. I agree that there was a definite QC problem with the fans, but to say the unit has "huge troubles" I think is an overstatement. I would say either you stick with it and make the vendors replace/make good on their warranties or you jump over to a comparable LCD (like the SONY WEGA) and deal with it's unique issues. I'll keep enjoying my Hit until the bomb activates--then call CC to replace it with another. |
Bronze Member Username: SeekerPost Number: 18 Registered: 12-2003 | Hey , could the problem be where the set was manufactured??? Our set is the 50V500 (no "A") and is quiet. How about you, MELL? Anonymous Guy? All you out there with noisy fans...is yours an "A" model? Let's try to find a common thread in the noisy units. |
New member Username: BigedPost Number: 7 Registered: 01-2004 | Best Deal, Yeah mine is the sraight 50V500. I purposely didn't want to get an "A" model as it seems all the posts on the "A" have mentioned some sort of problem. My manuf. plate on the back notes assembly in Tijuana---not too comforting!! I think you're right about the "A" models factory location being connected to all the references to fan noise. I just finished watching a music DVD on my set and I continue to be amazed by the quality of the picture!! Needless to say, I couldn't hear the fan humming with Rob Zombie being filtered through my home theater system!! |
50v550a owner Unregistered guest | I have a 50v500a built in Oct 2003 and there is no audible fan noise, no 'stuck' pixels just an amazing picture. I've set the output on my Time Warner HD cable box to include all possible outputs and like magic the TV automagically sets the aspect based on the signal. Six weeks and no problems at all. I did get the 5 year protection plan from HH Gregg for 200 bucks since the technology is so new. HD programming is amazing, DVDs are spectacular and my SD is really good when viewed in the right aspect. |
Flick Unregistered guest | Hi there: I am considering buying the 50V500 today from Sears. The salesman said that extended 5 year warranty which costs $599 includes replacement bulbs. Can anyone confirm or dispute this before I make the deal? I am concerned because the warranty agreement states that "expendable items" are not included, but also says that parts will be replaced due to normal wear and tear. So what's the story? Can anyone set the record straight? Thanks a lot for any consultation and advise you can provide. |
JMS@Cols.Oh Unregistered guest | The factory warranty on this TV is 1 year parts and labor except the bulb which is 90 days. Why? Hitachi knows that bulbs are expendable. You can rest assured Sears does too. Salesmen (not all, of course) will say anything to sell extended warranty. Their income and continued employment depends on it. I know whereof I speak. The bulb assembly is user replaceable via the front panel. An earlier poster saw the part available online for $200. I have not confirmed this. My 2 month old 50V500A is still going strong. No problem with fan noise either. OOPS, it's 'bout time for Sex and the City--which is sadly not in HD. Toodles and good luck to you. |
steve reiter Unregistered guest | can anyone tell me the pixel burnout/dead pixel rate of LCD tv's in general. I hate it on my laptop, and would hate it even more on a 2000-3000 TV thank you in advance |
Unregistered guest | Had ours now for 10 days, no problems whatsoever. Took Ultimate Elec. 6 weeks to get one after the Christmas rush. Fan is less noisy than our refrigerator or our Tivo unit. Pictures over our SD Directv unit are wonderful, especially after I tweaked it with the Video Essentials DVD. Progressive scan DVD is excellent also. Now we're contemplating doing the $99.00 Directv HD deal. Don't know if there is enough content yet to justify the monthly price though. Price was $2879.00 + $399.00 4yr. warranty. |
Researcher Unregistered guest | Recently purchased a 50V500 at Sears in NJ. Please note it was advertised as a 50v500 but I was delivered a 50v500A. Went to sears and they said this is the only model in the Sears inventory. Has any other Sears purchaser noticed this? I proceeded to call Hitachi to determine the difference and they said the only difference in the "A" and "non-A" models is placement of parts but that the functionality was the same. They claim the "A" designation is for servicing purposes in the event the unit has to be fixed or maintenanced. Has anyone heard this before? I would be interested in others calling Hitachi with the same question and comparing answers. I'll be dealing with Sears on this matter as well. BTW, thanks for all the posts with very helpful information. Stand - Tech Craft PTV58 looks great with the TV. |
Bronze Member Username: SeekerPost Number: 19 Registered: 12-2003 | TO: BOB J What is the Video Essentials DVD you spoke about? Is it only for Directv or will it tweak the picture for any reception of SD such as our Cablevision? Is this something that can be purchased anywhere and if so, what is the title of the DVD? Cost of DVD? |
Bronze Member Username: SeekerPost Number: 20 Registered: 12-2003 | Reasearcher: I also called Hitachi before I purchased the TV since I figured the "A" model was a newer model and would probably be better. Hitachi told me they were IDENTICAL and that the "A", non "A" were interchangeable and it made absolutely no difference in quality or physical design. I guess it all depends on who you get to lie to you...some lie one way and others do it differently. I also bought mine in NJ from Sears and was delivered a non "A" but since I have no problem, I'm not going to complain...especially since I don't know which one I would choose if I did have a choice. |
findgareth Unregistered guest | Had a service tech out to look at an odd screen fault. He said the "A" designation is due to a small redesign of the light box for easier servicing/dust encroachment. No performance difference. And yes, my fan is noisy at statr up, but settles down after a min. or so. Compared to a friends new Sony that just blew a bulb after a few months, I have no complaints. Love the picture, love the controls. |
Researcher Unregistered guest | Best Deal, Thank you. Spoke with a Sears manager today who proceeded to tell me that Hitachi told him there was no "A" designation. More lies and absolutely nonsensical. They are offering an exchange . . . At this point, I'm annoyed but I'm not sure it's worth the redelivery hassle since the picture is great. Thank you again. |

New member Username: Ssingh172Post Number: 1 Registered: 02-2004 | I just wanted to let you guys know my story with the 50v500....we bought the tv at the beginning of the year and noticed after a few weeks that there was this red/pinkish glare (looked like a photo negative)...it would come on from time to time...than it would come on all the time. We had someone take a look at it and he deduced that there was something wrong with the LCD engine drive and it needed to be replaced. Well instead of doing that the tv was still under 30 day circuit city gurantee so I just exchanged for another one...the story continues The Tv seemed to be working fine after that...however I noticed that whenever I viewed in 4:3 expanded or 16:9 standard in High Def, I would get partial cut off on the top and bottom of the screen image (i.e. if a stock ticker is going along the bottom part of it than it would be partially cut off). In regular 4:3 standard mode everything was fine....again we had service guys come out and look at it...they couldn't fix it in the service mode of the tv, and said they'd go back and research it. They called me back maybe an hour later saying that was how the image was displayed and it was normal??? Its normal when your watching an ABD High Def telecast of Millionare and half the answers at the bottom of the screen are clipped?? I was wondering if anyone had any similar problems or noticed clipping when you expanded to widescreen on the 50v500? |

New member Username: NewbienyPost Number: 5 Registered: 12-2003 | Simon Singh, go to http://www.avsforum.com/ and I'm sure you can get an answer on that. But be careful though, service menu is not something you want to mess around. I think the cut-off problem is normal for the 4:3 expanded mode, because it expands it from 4:3 to 16:9 screen (cut-off is more if you use zoom). It should work for 16:9 standard though, especially to HD signals. Maybe you can try to set the 480 overide to off on the cable box so all signal will come in as in 16:9 format. |

And there is no fan noise yet. Hopefully it will remain this way. We don't have a Hi-Def feed yet but it's scheduled fro Tuesday. But now I hear that VOOM has a new offer with no money down, so I will check that out. The picture, even in standard definition is great. Also bought the stand for $499. It makes me sick to see the great deels others are getting. I did get a $300 gift card to CC. Any tips where I can print out a price to take to CC and get them to do a price match. More about my problems: Tonight (2/29) I noticed that there is about a 2" light pink/purple smudge on the screen. Disappears in black backgrounds, but otherwise it is very obvious and permanent. I plan to take advantage of the 30-day return policy. I don't think this is the dead pixel problem I've read so much about on this site, but I honestly don't know what that looks like. That sounds like a much smaller (tip of a pencil) type of permanent coloring problem. Any tips on how to inspect my new TV for dead pixels? The fan noise drove my crazy at first, but I've started to get used to it. I can't believe that some people have posted that their fan noise is unnoticable. Hope I get one like that on the exchange. If I exchange my tv at CC within the 30-day time frame, does anyone know whether I get a fresh 30-days with the second tv? I hope my early troubles with the Hitachi can be fixed because I think it is a great tv. Can't wait to get hooked up to Dish Network satellite tv with HD programmming and to purchase a new progressive scan DVD with component output with my CC $300 gift card. Any recommended changes I should make to the default audio/video/etc settings, I haven't a clue? Other note, I have not been impressed by the Samsung DLP's that I've seen displayed at BB or CC. At both stores they were side by side with an LCD and the color on the DLP was horrible. Grass and skin colors were way off for my taste and it appeared to have a dullness rather than a brightness. Hopefully for DLP these TV's were merely in need of adjustment, which is probably the case. |
joelb Unregistered guest | My friend and I am were told that our hitachi 60v500 televisions are in and are being delivered today. I'll keep you all posted on the status of the sets when they are set up. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Also I wanted to correct our total price of the 60v500. TV-$3000 stand-$325 4yr ext warr-$399-all internal parts covered signed by store manager. Delivery-$50 Tax 8.75%-approx $330 Total out the door-$4105.00 |

stevieboy Unregistered guest | We got our 50v500 set on Feb. 5; it's been absolutely unbelievable! I've been viewing this thread since the middle of December, and have (thankfully) not suffered from any of the problems described above. However, my wife and I have both agreed to ungrade to the 60v500, which should arrive on Thursday. We'll cross our fingers for a problem-free set! Sorry to not contribute any big technical and pricing information to this thread, but the dialogue has made for great reading...thank you all. |
joelb Unregistered guest | Quick message to all, got the 60v500, unreal and I don't even have digital cable or satellite. Didn't have much time to get into it, but straight out of the box into regular cable looks awsome. By the way, as for the fan, no joke, with the sound off, you can't even hear it. Maybe I got lucky, but I am so happy thus far. Good luck to everyone else, I would highly recommend. |
cttompkins Unregistered guest | I took back my 50v500a this past weekend due to excessive fan noise. I had called Hitachi earlier, but they were no help. The fan noise sounded like the dial tone of a telephone. Although it was faint, it was very annoying. I replaced the set with a Panasonic PT-50LC13, and I couldn't be happier so far. Now, I have the same experience that the others on this board have had when they don't have fan noise problems (i.e. refrigerator is louder, only hear the fan when muted or turned off, etc.). It's such a relief. Whether it is quality control or what, Hitachi should fix their problem. |
Gene Unregistered guest | Well, the 50v500a I received last wednesday just went dead on me. I'm pretty sure it's just the main lamp -- but c'mon, after only 4 days of use? Called the tech. Awaiting his call back for a service visit. Except for this, I've loved the set so far! |
joelb Unregistered guest | Only more good news to say about the Hitachi 60v500a that my friend and I received March 1st. Unbelievable, I hear everyone taking about this fan noise. My fan is barely audible, and no I do not have a hearing problem. |
stevieboy Unregistered guest | Just to add to my upbeat post from yesterday...we got the COMCAST HD cable hookup 5 days ago...it's simply AWESOME...one of the allocated HD-only channels broadcasts, always, in Hi-Def. The African wildlife shows are breathtaking. The NBA game on last evening was stunningly clear. Can't wait for more channels to go this way. Even an old Steve Martin movie "Man with 2 Brains" (an Eighties movie) looked relatively flawless. And, I haven't made one single adjustment to the TV! Again, I hope the 60" set I'm getting on Thursday rocks out like this one does! (now, if I can only figure out how to incorporate the PIP, now that the cable, and the cable remote, are being used) |
husky99 Unregistered guest | Simon, if you go to 16:9 standard aspect you will not get any cropping on the top and bottom with your 4:3 input. Notice in the manual the circles in 4:3 expanded are cut a bit in the lower corners. Well, I am a new member of the club so consider this my introduction. I am an owner of a 50v500a, and I have fan noise. Unless the volume (with loudness) is over 13, I can hear the low pitch hummimg. Can I live with it.....with no current picture problems, maybe. I see others are also debating.... My Purchase Situation: Purchased from Sears 2/21/04 Listed @ 3299 Price matched CCity sale before the Super Bowl 3000 Subtract $30 for price match 2970 Add the stand +499 = 3469 Subtract 10% for promotion with Credit card = 3122 Plus Shipping @ 55 = 3177 Rebate for stand -499 = 2678 (final price) No extended warr. I had puchased an older model DLP projection, panasonic PT52DL10, it had a high pitch noice from the spinning wheel and a burnt spot in the center of the screen that only showed with a black image (light would get through like the mirrors had bent and could not restrict the light). Nice picture never the less, but still needed to return. So, consider that my worse case comparision. So on to the Hitachi LCD. Has anyone had service for their fan? Should I just be happy that the picture is perfect and get used to the humming/ turn up the sound? cttompkins, what did Hitachi say to you about your issue? |
Justxxx Unregistered guest | I just pulled the trigger on the 50V500 from Sears. I wasn't plan on buying the set when I got there but I got a pretty deal (I think). They price matched www.shopsunshine.com at 2699. They didn't even charge the $185 would be shipping cost. With the 10% of the price different, I end up paying 2649 + tax. To my surprise, I got a rebate for the free stand. I ended up paying 2649 + tax for the TV and the stand. |
Anonymous | I bought my 50v500 from CC last night. It's being delivered in a few hours. It was listed for 3299 but Ultimate Electronics had a 10% off coupon, so they price matched that plus the additional 10% (for a total of $363) $2907. I got free delivery, but I bought the extended 4 yr warranty for $375. I have 30 days to cancel the warranty for a full refund. I have seen some posts that say the bulbs are covered and some that say the bulbs aren't covered. Any other reason to have this warranty? I'll definitely post my experience, as I have Dish Network and am anxious to see the quality of the picture. |
Unregistered guest | Bought my 50v500 at CC as an open box for $2600 plus got a rebate offer of a $200 Gift Card, bringing the price to $2400. Didn't need delivery ($40) since I own a Tahoe and took it home with me. Comcast guy came yesterday to hook up HDTV cable box and the picture is stunning! |
New member Username: NewbienyPost Number: 6 Registered: Dec-03 | Hi, for those are still in the market, Sears (http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/home.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&vertical=SEARS&sid=I00 84400010000100525) is offering 10% extra off on regular, sale price, ends this coming Saturday. Many of us took advantage of this during their Christmas season (every Sat. morning before 10am). That means if you can get them to price match first, you can take an additional 10% (which is a lot for an item in this price range) off the lowered price. However, I remember someone said that their sales people said you can only get one (price match) or the other (10% off), but not both. But there were many successful stories too (including me). So, Your mileage may vary. Good luck. |
Anonymous | Following up on my post above... I have now had my 50v500 for a few hours and I LOVE IT!! I have Dish Network which is digital. I am using S-video into the tv, so that probably helps also. I also got a $300 gift card from CC on top of the $2907 price, bringing it to $2607. The warranty from Hitachi is one year in home service, so I am REALLY questioning the CC protection plan that I spent $375 on. My CC had an open box item also for 2800 but I did not like the fact it was open box, due to all the people that returned theirs on this board...you may be getting one of theirs. My only problem is I have it in a built-in nook and it's a little high up to view. But that is my problem. I am thinking about getting a Kameleon remote so I can get rid of my 3 remotes I have now (Tv, Receiver for surround sound, Dish, DVD player-which I got the tv remote to work with). Anyone have one of the fancy remotes?? |
New member Username: BigedPost Number: 1 Registered: Mar-04 | Anon, I bought the Kameleon remote over a month ago. I read the reviews on it and although it has some weak points (like an annoying buzzing when lit) the remote is a great value for its price. I have all my components operated from it and a few macros set up to turn everything on/off and a "punch through" that operates my home theater volume anytime you push the volume buttons. I had to use the great dial-up feature to download the software codes for my JVC Amp. The service folks knew the problem immediately. Can't believe you can update a remote over the phone. Buy one from Radio Shack and be happy. Great investment. Cheers!! |
New member Username: AscoondogGray, Georgia USA Post Number: 1 Registered: Mar-04 | Where can I get a copy of the Free Stand Rebate? I asked my local Sears and they did not know what I was talking about. Help Please! This is a big factor in my purchasing this television. |
Anonymous | just hearing about all the fan noise. It seems that the high pitched noise starts getting louder or noticable when the tv has been on for 5-6 hours. When I watch a movie I don't hear it at all. But during periods of low volume noise, I can hear it. I don't know whether to report this noise or if not noticeable just grin and bear it. Need some input, thanks |
joel b Unregistered guest | Oh no, not the fan. At first the fan on my 60v500a was barely audible. Now since having the tv for 4 days, the fan is now noticable. The humming can become annoying sometimes while watching unless the volume is over 14. It's not that it is so loud, but more like you can't help but keep from paying attention to it. I could forget about it during a movie and then all of the sudden I will think about the fan and then it becomes a distraction. All in all it, I love the tv, everything else about it is awesome, I hope I can get the fan noise out of my mind. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to muffle the fan noise, or is that not possible. Let us know, it could help out a lot of v500 owners. |
MAC77 Unregistered guest | joel b...The only way to muffle the fan noise is to return the tv and wait for Hitachi to fix their inexcusable problem...The problem here is that the LCD technology is new with bugs (fan noise etc.) that have to be ironed out in time...Hitachi will never admit to this problem since they would have to fix it for everyone. Let's hope the next release solves this problem because the v500 series tv's are awesome... |
Gene Unregistered guest | Ashley Spires: The rebate form is a part of your receipt, printed out at the time of your purchase -- it's not a separate form. |
Anonymous | the kameleon is pretty cool. I just ordered the Harmony sst-659. That has some awesome reviews!! Anyone have that experience? Day Two with my new tv is great. My wife came home last night from work and it passed the wifey test, which is good news. The only issue are all the remotes (for dvd, tv, receiver and Dish). Once i get the Harmony, I think it'll be HEAVEN! The fan noise was audible day one when I didn't have any sound on. I don't use the tv sound, but with surround sound, I cannot hear it at all. And I LISTEN for it because of all the comments on this board about it. I have this site bookmarked on my desktop, so I'll keep everyone updated as the days go by... No comments on the protection plan...hmmm? |
New member Username: Ekalbs4Kennewick, WA Post Number: 4 Registered: Feb-04 | joelb, Your earlier posts gave me some hope for receiving a quite fan, "By the way, as for the fan, no joke, with the sound off, you can't even hear it." AND "Unbelievable, I hear everyone talking about this fan noise. My fan is barely audible, and no I do not have a hearing problem." BUT, After reading your latest post, "Oh no, not the fan. At first the fan on my 60v500a was barely audible. Now since having the tv for 4 days, the fan is now noticable. . . ." I've lost hope! I'm starting to come to the conclusion that unfortunately the fan noise is not a random defect of some people's tv's, its just a reality of the current design. I've read lots of similar complaints about Sony fans. I've given up hope on the search for a set with a quite fan and would find it hard to believe any more posts like the ones joelb posted earlier. Those people either are lucky and don't hear that type of tone or they don't feel like admitting on this site that they have started to notice the fan and its bugging them a little. Lucky for me, I've started to get use to it even though the insanity of it is what brought me here in the first place. |
Joel B Unregistered guest | Akalbs4/Mac77-thanks for the input This fan noise(obviously Hitachi- v500 model) is starting to annoy the heck out of me. I feel I can't even enjoy watching a show without hearing the dam thing. This is starting to drive me nuts. I am constantly trying to hear if I can hear the fan and at the same time I am hoping I don't hear it, but I do, do you all hear me on this or is it just me. |
Joel B Unregistered guest | To all Hitachi V500 owners. I just sent an e-mail to Hitachi about the fan noise complaints we all have. I will keep you posted on the response I receive. Lets keep our fingers crossed. If I can make a recommendation. I think everyone with a V500 should write an e-mail about the lousy fan and its awful noise. If we get on their coattails and can be heard in great numbers, it might prompt them to do something. They just have to hear from us all. Do your part, it can't hurt us any more than our ears are hurting from the fan noise. Later All. |

stevieboy Unregistered guest | Update on the 50" to 60" "exchange": Got the 60" as promised, on Thursday. Problem: "Static-y" green, not on one area of TV image, but it seems to follow a pattern scene-by-scene (as if the green is being substituted for another color). After blasting my stupidity from switching to a perfectly functioning 50" to this broken 60", I came to my senses (after fiddling around with trying to make sure the factory default settings were set). Fortunately, I called the ABC Warehouse store at 6:30PM (in Mich, where I purchased it), and was promised that a new one would be delivered today (the next day!!), in the morning. Well, it has been delivered, and while I've been stuck at work all day, my wife at home has assured me that the delivery people plugged it in, turned it on, and ...VOILA, it worked!! Before I get too excited though, I'll give it the ole' once over, as soon as I get home. To make this LONG story short, I was REALLY bummed out last night, and in the course of 18 hours, I'm (cautiously) optimistic! Kudos to ABC Warehouse in Michigan for their GREAT service....unfortunately, the 60" stand has no predicted delivery date...! Oh well, can't win 'em all! |

New member Username: BigedPost Number: 2 Registered: Mar-04 | Joel B, I first want to say that I've had my 50V500 for over 6 weeks with no problems at all---except of course I haven't been paying attention to the Mrs!! I appreciate you posting the Hit Customer Service E-mail address. I just shot off a msg. requesting satisfaction for all of us on reducing the fan noise----I still think mine is very acceptable and hasn't gotten worse with age. I eagerly agree that this is the only design flaw for this great PTV. Hopefully, we'll all get a redesigned fan and be even happier. Keep at it I say. Thanks again for picking up the fight!! |
sad to say Unregistered guest | Just called Sears to have them pick up my 50v500a. Had it for the full 30 days. Couldn't stand the fan noise any more. Way too much money for something that is not top notch. Thought about trading for the SONY, but found that they have more problems than the Hitachi. |
Anonymous | I went through 2 50v500's before I finally decided to switch to the SONY. I've had the sony for 2 weeks now, and I am really happy. There is no fan noise, no bulb problems, no "fly buzzing" sound. From what I understand from researching the sony, they fixed a production flaw that was causing the fly buzz sound and redesigned the lamp. Mine was made in February 2004. All in all, I REALLY REALLY liked the Hitachi, but the fan noise I was experiencing was maddening. The sony is just as great, so now I have what I want and no problems. Oh, and since the sony design looks good on any type of stand or even a coffee table (like I am using) I got $514.00 back on the exchange when I got rid of the overpriced hitachi stand. |
Chas50v500 Unregistered guest | I orignally posted a messgae on 2/17/2004 regarding the fan noise. I sent an email with several fan noise clips from this forum to Hitachi and was contacted by Hitachi the next day. I think my opinion reflects that of most owners with the fan noise.....we love the unit and are looking for a solution to the noise. The Hitachi reps....I talked to a few, did not admit to any known production problems. In all fairness, they did bring up some points that had merit to defend the noise. They cited that the fan is absolutely necessary to this design (need to cool the projection bulb) and the fact that most people are not used to hearing fan noise from the conventional tv's they previously owned. They also stated that placement of the tv, particularly the distance from the wall, distance from listening locations, etc can be a factor. I agreee with both of these points and did some research by typing " lcd rear projection fan noise" into Google. There are similar fan noise complaints on all brands of this type of tv. I was surprised to see that some of the models (mainly projector style units) are actually advertising the fan level noises in db ratings as a selling point (lower db's). This makes sense to me since the noise can be measured and you wouldn't expect to find a variance of any large degree unless you had a defect. In my particular case, I had a definate probelm with the first unit I received in December of 2003. The noise did not appear until after several days of use, was much louder than the unit I have now and was the same high pitched whine that many people have cited. While the Hitachi reps did not admit a universal problem, they were more then willing to work with me on a resolution. We scheduled a service call from a local repair company. Hitachi was not willing to send a fan without having the serviceman look at the unit. While this did not make sense in my case, they were sticking to a company policy that does make sense. The service guy called before arriving and advised that he did have a fan in stock and could replace it immediately. Unfortunately, he had the wrong fan, so I will need another service call. One thing that did impress me was the complexity of the tv when he removed the back cover....(which I would strongly recommend against doing on your own since you'll void the warranty and probably do more damage in the process). The fan is ported/chaneled to the exit grill. There also appeared to be some type of heat shield near the fan housing. I don't pretend to be an engineer, but I could see that plenty of work went into the development of this design. My position at this point is....I know this is a new design and improvements will be made in the future designs. If I have to live with the fan noise at an acceptable level, I will. Some people have quoted the noticable noise at "14" on the volume level and that is similar to where I am at now. I do want to have the serviceman try a new fan to rule out any defects since so many people have posted reviews with no noticeable levels, lower than a refridgerator or quieter than Tivo. My unit is not at that level yet. If it is truly a limitation of the current design accompanied with my particular environment, I will keep the tv and enjoy it to the max. That is the good part. This tv really rocks! The picture and audio are really incredible. I am running a Comcast box and all of the HD shows and DVD are truly awesome. In the short time that I have owned the unit, additional programming has been added to the exsisting HD channels and some new channels (WGN beginning 4/1/04) have been added. I can see how this problem is a large enough annoyance to become a marketing concern that will force the industry to engineer a solution. In my case, my old TV went out after several years and I decided to buy the HD Home theater now. I understand that future designs will improve, programming will only get better and the price will most likely come down. But my entire family is really enjoying the home theater experience. I have a couple of high schools kids and we use the tv for everything from regular programmming, cable programming, DVD's and Xbox games (most new games are in HD, some with Surround Sound too). At thier age, I like the idea of having them with their friends in my home. That said and done, I'll work with Hitachi to see if there is a better solution and enjoy the benifits of the TV today. I purchased my tv from CC and had some help with the original exchange within 30 days. My only suggestion from new buyers would be to find a friend with any brand rear projection LCD. Stick to the LCD design since the older CRT's-floor models- have fans that are located near the floor. Listen to the fan noise in their home, rather than a store that has background noise and a wide open area. This will give you an idea of what to expect. I did a ton of research before I settled on the Hitachi and it was the quality of the picture that sold me. I use a Sony amp for the Home Theater, but the added bonus was the internal audio. If I currently have the fan noise at the lowest possible level....(which I doubt)I will continue to enjoy the system knowing that I got what I paid for. I will keep the group posted on the installation of the new fan. |

New member Username: RohacklePost Number: 1 Registered: Mar-04 | Im getting my 50v500 delivered today, I paid way more than the rest of you since only sears and circuit city sell this set here in san diego.. very excited and not worried one bit about fan noise because with my sound system (polk audio rms6600) i cant even hear planes when they fly overhead. If you go out and buy a tv with technology this new you have to expect some kinks. And If you spend more than 3 grand on a tv, you shouldnt be using the tv speakers to begin with. That is sacreligous. Go out and get a nice surround sound system that puts you in the movie and then turn down your tv's sound all the way down. Another idea is to buy some nice sound dampening materials to put behind your tv, (you know the stuff on recording studio walls that looks like egg crates...) polkaudio.com has a great home theater manual you can download in pdf form to learn more about this if you are a newb. It seems this message board is filled with fan noise complainers, while the avsforum is filled with people complaining about black corners. I wish you all well, and no shame on hitachi, from what i have seen at the stores this tv looks great. The manual says that fan noise is normal BTW.. I have read that all projection systems have some amount of fan noise... i guess this is the price we pay for such great visuals without spending 9 grand on a plasma screen. good luck to all, ill post my feelings about this bad boy after it arrives... |

Unless you hear mechanical noise, i.e., vibration, grinding, rattling, etc., the fan is operating normally. If you have any further questions about this or any other Hitachi product, please contact our technical assistance number at 1-800-HITACHI. Please have your model number ready. TimJ Unregistered guest | I guess I'll add my reply from Hitachi......... Dear Tim, Thank you for writing. Your product contains a small fan to circulate air throughout the interior of the product. This air movement is essential to maintain optimum operating conditions and prolong the life of components, specially the lamp. Unfortunately, you WILL be able to hear this air movement under quiet conditions. Unless you hear mechanical noise, (i.e., vibration, grinding, rattling, etc.) the fan is operating normally. If you believe that there is an issue with the fan, then I would recommend having an authorized servicer look at the unit. You may use the Service Locator at our website (go directly to http://hitachi.web-forms.com/cgi/hitachi/locator/www_form?pg=loc~x=serv and enter the Product and Zip Code to find your service centers). Or, you may contact our support number at 1-800-448-2244 and follow the prompts to locate the nearest authorized service center for your product. Please have pencil and paper ready when you call. If you have any further questions about this or any other Hitachi product, feel free to write or call our technical assistance number at 1-800-HITACHI. Again, thank you for your interest in Hitachi. Unregistered guest | so what does everyone think of the hitachi 60v500 verses the 50v500? Im ready to buy and i cant make my mind up. I want the 60v500, but most of the forms talk about the 50v500. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. |

Crutchfield suggested for HDTV-capable TVs with 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio, 10.4 feet is the ideal (not the maximum) viewing distance for a 50" TV and 12.5 feet for a 60" TV. Most of people here bought the 50v500 because this is the 50V500 thread after all. I think you can't go wrong with either one. Good luck. |

Nevertheless, I still sometimes wish for the 60"..... If the average viewing distance exceeds 10 feet, get the 60V500! |
Chas50V500 Unregistered guest | The fan saga continues. I had the service guys out to replace the fan and I'm not sure what to think. The noise is only slightly reduced, but this is probably the best to expect. It is definately a much better situation then the first tv set I had with the defective fan. The good news is, from the laymans point of view, the tv guts look very complicated and structurally sound. It would be a very bad idea to play with this set yourself and void the warranty, but I watched the repairman and was impressed with all the extra bracing and brackets....it took the guy awhile to get to the fan and swap it out. The doubt that I have is that this is a computer type fan that you can purchase from a guy in Florida for $10. That said, it is a very good computer fan that is made or sold through Panasonic, but it is still a computer type fan. The name is the "Panaflo Model FBA09A12L". I've listed some links below that are the manufacturers info, an apparently independant review and the guy who sells them in Florida. I am not a television engineer and I don't know much about how they came up with this design. I think it is a safe bet that all of the other brands are using a similar setup. I am wondering if it is more of a problem with the framing/baffle tube that directs the airflow to the projection bulb. So here is what I decided for my particular situation. I have a Sony Amp/JVC Speaker 5.1 system which cost me about $700. Although I didn't pay top dollar, I am very satisfied with the setup. I also like the fact that I get awesome sound through the Hitachi if I don't want to power up the amp. My room is fairly small with the TV set at an angle in a corner. I am sure the distance from the rear of the set to walls and the actual seating distance is a factor that will have an effect on the amount of fan noise. At this point, I realize that I have purchased a fairly new design. I am sure the designs will change for the better, the price may get cheaper and I may even get better looking in the future. But for now....I am really enjoying the benefits of the 50V500. I moved up from on old 27" Sony tv to a 50" HD 5.1 Home Theater. I am satisfied that I did the research, bought the right tv with a great picure and I will live with the fan noise as fact of life issue. If someone comes up with a method for insulating the wall and it is successful, I might give it a try. In the meantime, I am enjoying the heck out of the 50v500. I have Comcast Cable and the quality of the HD pix is incredible. The Academy Awards, Tonight Show, Sporanos, to name a few (and many in 5.1 Surround) are awesome with this system. Other people may have different needs or expectations. My only suggestion would be to do the research yourself, try to listen to the tv in someone's home, and consider the Service Plan since this is a fairly new design. I also benefitted from the CC 30 Day Return Policy since my first unit went bad after a week. I'll keep checking this site for additional info and appreciate the help I had when selecting this Make/Model. |
