I want to add another receiver to my satellite system, but i'm not sure if I have to buy an expensive multi-switch or just a splitter that can support the input frequency of the receiver.

If you have a two output directtv dish run one coax to each receiver. If you have more than two you can get new 4x8 splitters on EBay for about $50
