Just wondering if any has one of these and if so how is the Progressive scan. I heard there is no way to set to region-free but not concerned about that. Just would like to know how Progressive scan is as I will be hooking to my HD Ready TV.

Thanks in advance,

JAPA
I JUST BOUGHT ONE LIKE YOURS YESTERDAY AND YES, YOU CAN HACK IT TO MAKE IT REGION FREE!.

HERE ARE THE STEPS:
1. TURN ON
2. OPEN AND CLOSE THE TRAY W/O DISK ON IT.
3. PRESS: MENU,1,9
4. YOU WILL SEE A MENU. SELECT REGION IN THE MENU, PRESS ENTER AND PUT THE REGION YOU WANT (0=MULTI).
5. PRESS OPEN/CLOSE TRAY.
6. NOW YOU CAN ENJOY ANY REGION DVD

ABOUT THE PROGRESIVE SCAN, AFTER YOU CONNECT THE DVD TO AN HDTV, YOU MUST STEUP THE DVD TO ACTIVATE THIS. YOU MUST SEE A BETTER PICTURE AFTER DOING SO.

Does it support PAL->NTSC conversion when watching foreign disks on a US TV?

Raj
I just managed to change the region code in my CH-DVD 300 by following the instructions mentioned by JAPA above. Only difference: OPEN/CLOSE should not be in remote, but, directly on the player.

The menu is really detailed, and it is better not to play with anything other than the region setting.

Yes. There is absolutely no problem in playing PAL/NTSC etc... Actually, I purchased my player in a US RadioShack outlet and have used it both in USA and now in India without any problems, whatsoever.

Anonymous
Does it play Mpeg videos that are recorded on cd-r/w's?

Anonymous
You can burn a CD-R with a collection of jpgs, mpgs, mp3, etc. Then when you put that disc in the DVD player you will see a directory listing of all the files on the disc. Pick a file and it will automatically know how to play that specific file.

And about disable Macrovision of Cyberhome CH-DVD 300???????????

Anonymous
Has anyone actually tried to use the Progressive Scan feature on this CyberHome DVD player? I just paid $37 (!) for it at BestBuy, and I think I got what I paid for. It claims 3:2 pulldown Progressive Scan, but I found it to NOT be Progressive Scan - it almost looked like they were cheating and just line-doubling. Actually, it was worse than that. Every curved line is pixelized in Progressive mode. I am comparing my images with my existing DVD playback that is achieved through a dedicated card on my desktop that goes to my projector -- I wanted to get rid of the desktop but this will not do it.

Anybody else have trouble with this thing's Progressive Scan.

Raj,
have you played a PAL DVD in the US on an NTSC television, (and maybe vice versa, an NTSC DVD on a PAL TV in India)? I'm just wondering if it just passes the PAL signal through or actually converts PAL to NTSC.

You have to set the TV mode from interlace to Progressive scan in the menu of the DVD player...

I forgot to do the above too, but now tha i have
it looks just as good as my Toshiba player.

I have my CH-DVD 300 for a little over a month. It played all formats fine. I recently loaded a dvd I rented in and it would not play. It took several minutes for it to read then I got messege "insert disk". The disc does play in my Playstation 2 so I know it is not the disc itself. It still plays every other format that I give it with out any hitches, but not bought or rented dvd's. I've had the same problem with another under 50.00 model from AMW.On this one only after about a week of use it stopped playing standard dvd's as well but, still had no trouble reading any other format I gave it. Does anyone know how I could repair this problem.

I just bought one at SAMS Club for $39.99.
It played first DVD and VCD that I placed in it without any problems.
The moment I placed a MP3 disk, it started giving problems and subsequently will not play any type of disc. Keeps reading the disk and sometimes displays "Insert Disc" message as reported above. The sticker on the model states a mfg date of Nov 2003.
It goes back to SAM's today.

Try the following addition when attempting to go multi region. When changing the region and the whole region line is highlighted you need to press enter. Then your region is the only part lit up,press 0 for multi region and enter again, should highlight the whole line again.
This way saves the setting, hopefully!

(ch-dvd 300 cyberhome.) as well i get skips in audio but when it works it is very clear....
also when dvd is stuck i have to unplug to reset it. then works ok..

On a previous posting I stated that regular rented or commercial dvd movies did not play anymore in my cyberhome DVD 300. Well the very next day I inserted the same disc and it worked. I've been playing dvd movies on it since my last posting a month ago. Everything is ok. I think the problem stems from using other formats: vcd , mp3, or a mixed data cd. It seems that sometimes the switching mechanism does not switch back after I've loaded a regular cd after all of these other formats. It seems to be working fine now, and I still think it is one of the best for under $50.00

I have a strange problem. Just one particular DVD movie has no audio, picture's great, CC works. All other DVD's, VCD'd, CD-RW's play perfect.
Just this one. The disk is not bad as it plays on my friends DVD player with great audio. I even went and got a second copy of the same movie - same problem, nice picture, no sound.
Any ideas on what the problem might be.

To Abraham - I get this problem of no sound too. It can be a real pain. I've no idea why it does this. Unplug the player and then plug it in again. This seems to recycle whatever is locking it up. Don't just switch it off and on because there's always power running through these things and it needs to be well and truly OFF then ON again.

I have the same audio problem with my CH-300... One dvd doesnt play audio, unless it's at the root menu. it only does this after listening to mp3s, too. i've tried unplugging to reset the machine, but to no avail. what i have noticed though is when i insert a particular dvd (requiem for a dream) into the drive, and play a minute or so, it plays audio on my non working dvds fine. any ideas?

If your disc is stuck, there's an emergency eject slot on the underside. You can stick a plastic knife in it and give it a jiggle and it will open.
<http://www.cyberhome.com/search2.asp>

If you have problems read the reviews at epinions, a few people there had problems, too.
My player has been fine for about 5 months. If I don't encounter any problems with it, I plan on getting another one as a gift since it's so cheap and can be hacked to region-free.

I bought 2 CH-300 recently. One for use in India and the other for use in USA. I am not very tech savvy to understand the various regions/macrovisions.

Could someone explain how to set the player for India to play PAL dvd/vcds, watch them on PAL TVs and copy those dvds to another dvd/video cassette.

Also please explain how to set the player for USA to play NTSC&PAL dvds/vcds with NTSC output. Thankyou.

If you go messing with the settings (ie: trying to initiate the Progressive scan feature on a non-progressive scan TV-blacks out the screen-even the menus), turn on unit(empty of course),open it, close it and hold in the stop key on the unit itself for 5 seconds. This should reset the unit. It did for me.

I read all comments posted here on CH DVD 300 and still could not find explicit instructions on how to set up the device to play:
1. PAL dvd on PAL TV
2. NTSC dvd on PAL TV
Apparently it can be plugged into 110 or 220 V outlets without any external voltage adapter. Is this true? Thank you.

I just bought this model from Sam's ($40, built april 04). I've had to hook it up to the front of my tv in the input 2 slots since I'm using the back tv slots (input 1) for my vcr. Is there any way to connect the dvd without using the front of the tv to keep it in the input 1 selection or will I just have to live with using input 1 for my vcr and input 2 for my dvd? I just don't like the wires having to come out of the front of the tv.

thx

Just a followup to some messages above about the life of this unit and problems too.

I bought one this past Sunday and it played a dvd and a cd with mp3's on it. Afterwards, it wouldn't play anything. I tried resetting, everything in the book but it would just say "bad disc". I called the manufacturer and was on hold for 45 minutes then gave up. Called again and after 40 minutes, I got a live body. After explaining my problem, he told me to bring it back to Sam's for another one. No problem except I wanted to make sure that ALL their units would work for more than one day. After replacing it last night, I tried dvd's, cd-r's, disks with mp3's, jpegs, etc. It played EVERYTHING without a problem. No noise either.

Now, I just have to hope that it lasts.

Russellb2,

I'm new at this but try either 1)holding the stop button on the unit (not the remote) for 5-20 seconds until the screen changes or 2)read the manual near the end (I don't have it with me now to give you the page #) where it shows how to reset to factory settings. If not, call Cyberhome. I had to wait 45 minutes to get a live body but at least you might get an answer.

Good luck.

Hello! I have the Cyberhome 300 and am trying to change the region code, I was successful in using the menu, 1, 9 tips as posted, but when changed the screen runs through the TV quickly, going from down towards the top and was in black and white. I tried several DVD's from britain, using codes 2, 4 and 0. None worked. COULD the problem be that my TV is an old school one that has no imput plugs so the dvd player is hooked through the VCR. is this possible problem? Or is it a DVD player error? any thoughts?! THANKS

I have a Cyberhome CH-DVD 300, and so far like it real well. But, I do have a problem. I have burned several VCD movies to a DVD+RW, for test purposes before burning to a DVD-R and am having problems playing them. On the menu it shows only the first movie, but if I test on computer in Windows media, it shows all 3 movies and will play all three. Since the directions that came with the player are extremely limited, I wondered if perhaps what i am trying to do will not play on the Cyberhome unit. Can anyone help me. Thanks

Maybe I am not asking my question correctly. Let me explain what I am trying to do and see if anyone can help me. I have several mpg movies on my computer hard drive that I originally was going to put on CD/R disks as VCD movies. But, because these were a eries of movies, decided I would like to burn them to DVD RW or R putting 3, 4 or 5 on one disk, saving lots of storage space. It appears that I am getting them on the disk, but when I pop them into the cyberhome dvd player it only finds the first one. Is there something in the setup of the player that I can change to enable it to find everything on the DVD disk? Or is there another format that I should be using to ensure they will all be found by the player. Has anyone else ever tried putting several movies on one disk.

Thanks a bunch.

I followed Japa's instructions from the August 1, 2003 posting. Also noted Raj about opening the tray on the DVD player, not via the remote. Within minutes the player was region free and playing a Region 2 - PAL format DVD on my Canadian NTSC Television. I'm very impressed with this little DVD player, so far I have played Regions 1, 0, 5 (NTSC formats) and Region 2 -(PAL Format) DVD's with no problems. The remote buttons are a little small but let's face it the unit cost less than $50 Cdn. so I can't be too picky. I read some of the postings that indicated that the unit is prone to failure along the way. I purchased my unit from Walmart and they offer a full year, in store replacement warranty on the player. I understand from reading another post that Sears may sell the unit (they don't seem to in Canada however) and you can always buy extended warranties from Sears. I would endorse this product especially for those who want to play DVD's from other regions. For Classic and foreign film buffs, some really great films are still only available on Region 2 - PAL Format, and a region free player opens a whole new opportunity.

Yougen - The older CH-DVD 300's seem to have automatically picked up on the subtitles and displayed them - I just picked up a June/04 model and I now have to use the subtitles button to display any subtitles in the DVD - Just keep pressing as there are 5 different ones to chose from.

Rubynorth - You may find that you have started to run into the Macro-encoding of the DVD and may have to look into a video enhancer of some sort to solve that problem.

I have a Daewoo player but unfortunately Region 2 widescreen DVDs are shown slightly vertically squeezed on NTSC TVs - PAL is fine (I have both). Does anyone know whether this problem happens on the Cyberhome DVD 300 player? I know some players are okay and some aren't. Also I bought a Himage all-region player about a year ago but took it back to the store because the sound and image synch were slightly out. Has anyone had this problem with the Cyberhome especially with Region 2 discs?

Martin.

Rubynorth,

I'd like to expand on the macrovision tip.

I'm guessing that you are running the output of your DVD into your VCR, and then the VCR into the TV.

Macrovision encoded DVDs (some are, some aren't) are intended not to be recordable.
They include a signal that confuses recorders, yielding the viewing effects you've described.

So, you need to run the DVD player directly into the TV, or at least -NOT- thru the VCR.

Good luck.

Hi techy people....

My question concerns my CH-DVD 300 unit. I have been using it to play some DVD movies which are saved on DVD+R disks. The unit has always automatically recognized these DVD's as movies and it always prompted me to the appropriate DVD opening screen. However, sadly enough, recently, I accidentally inserted an old CD with a Win 95 compatible CD movie on it in the DVD player. The player prompted me to the MPG/MP3 screen (The screen that has Disc, Display: Mixed and Playmode: Normal, etc.). Ever since, I get the same screen every time I insert a DVD movie that is saved on a DVD+R disk and I cannot get anywhere from there. I think the unit is recognizing the materials on the DVD+R disks as pictures and MP3 files and not as DVD movies. Again, I can not get pass this screen, thus, I cannot access or watch my movies. I set the unit back to the factory specifications and that did not help. I tried to click on any of the files that appeared in the directories of the disk and nothing allowed me to view the movies!

Is there any chance that I can get the unit to recognize my DVD+R movies as movies again and not as picture and audio files? I truly appreciate your help.

Thanks a lot,
TS

Macrovision can be overcome in a couple of ways. Probably the best way is to decrypt, reformat without macrovision and burn to the DVD recordable format of your choice (the ch-dvd 300 plays both dvd-r and dvd+r). Without going through that hassle, you can buy a device that "normalizes" the overamplified signals (that are predominantly in the non-viewable portion of the video signal) that force your AGC (automatic gain control) to brighten and dim your entire picture. One that works extremely well and is relatively inexpensive is the Sima Copymaster. Sima has a newer device that also might work but I have not tried it (Sima "Copy This").
Hope this helps!

There is really no way to "disable macrovision" on a dvd player. Macrovision depends on the AGC circuit of a vcr to do its dirty work. You can defeat it with an external "clipping" device (like the one mentioned in my previous post), or you can try to disable the AGC circuit in your vcr which is usually very difficult. You can also re-record the media without Macrovision which gets rid of it (which I prefer).

I had bought a Cyberhome CH-DVD 300 2 months ago. It worked fine initially. I played VCDs & listened to MP3 on this DVD player. Now the DVD won't turn ON. It remains in standby mode, does not show the green light. I tried operating it from the remote as well as the front panel, but no luck.

Anybody has any idea on how to get over this problem ?

The DVD door on my Cybervision DVD won't stay closed after I insert a disk. The only way to get the DVD to load is to hold the door closed by hand and wait 5-6 cycles (open door/close door) for the DVD to finally load. After it loads everything is ok. Anybody heard of this problem?

So, am I to believe that there is no way to enable change "interlaced" to "progressive scan" unless you have an HDTV? Thanks in advance..

Stop before you spend another second on this product READ THIS!
I have the solution to all problems posted here!
Toss this piece of junk in the garbage and buy a new brand name DVD player. I really can't belive that a company spent the time to develope such a horrid product. Unfortunately the only thing that can be accomplished by this product is to contribute to the desctruction of the environment, Thanks CyberHome nice work! Just Trash it!!!

I just purchased a CH-DVD 300 today from BestBuy. However, I cannot get the Menu displayed so that I can change the region. Could anyone teach me how to do that properly?

Thank you in advance.

open /close with out disc
press menu then 1 then 9
you will get a menu - you should be on the region setting , if not select it with your up/down arrows
you then change the setting to what ever region you want but 0 seems to be multiregional.
once done that to get out and set it open/ close and should be ready to go - worked for me.
I was actually able to play some PAL dvds from australia on the player straight out of the box but then found some others did not work. The did after i changed the region code as above.
good luck - I got this hack off the top of this forum

I tried to play both a minidvd-r and a minidvd-rw in the CH DVD-300 with both freezing and continuing the video throughout the disc, but the audio plays fine - only the video stops and starts. Any ideas on what would correct the problem.

I also have no sound on some DVDs. Specifically, any DVD I have that has "Dolby Digital Mono" will not give sound. Dolby Digital Stereo will play on left/right channels, but Dolby Digital Mono only plays on the CENTER channel, which apparently the CyberHome DVD players cannot handle. In other words, CyberHome has not enabled their DVD players to play a center channel, thus no sound!

And now WalMart is selling these things. I was in there the other day and they must have had two dozen in stock. I have one I bought from Bestbuy about six months ago. It works ok on composite video (except I have had some instances of audio not working unless I unplug power) , but I have never been successful in getting it to work with the component input option. Anyone else have this experience? Oh yes, I did change it from S-Video to Component in the setup menu so that is not the reason it is not working with component inputs.
