Need info about hook-up for DVD/VCR to cable for dummies

I just bought a Panasonic DVD/VCR combo that I've been attempting to hookup to my Samsung digital television and my Comcast cable box all afternoon. My goal is to be able to hook them up so that the VCR recognizes and cooperates with the cable system. Can anyone describe how to do this in the plainest language possible? I have 2 sets of the red, yellow and white tipped cables and a couple of cables that have mechanisms that screw into the appropriate port. (See how dumbed down I need it; I don't even know the proper names for the cables.) I appreciate your help.
