Is video upconversion on DVD player necessary for HDTV?

I talked to a guy about using ordinary progressive scan DVD player and component video cable on HDTV. And he told me I won't get the best video quality from the HDTV. He said I need a DVD player with video upconversion capability to fully take advantage of the HDTV. Specifically the DVD player must have DVI or HDMI output to connect to HDTV. I checked crutchfield and it is correct. But guys, have you tried this yourself? How the progressive plus component is worse than the DVI or HDMI? Real comparison can prove or disaprove any theory and speculation.
