Cd and Dvd Damage?

Does anyone know if pausing cds and dvds for an extended period of time will cause any damage to the data on them? I tend to do this a lot especially on my computer and i was wondering if it will damage anything....

Not the disc, but it's putting unnecessary wear on the laser/spindle motor.
