Well, just set my new 52" tosh. All I have right now is DVD, and the first movie I tried was mosters Inc. fantastic, and then it was all downhill from there. Anything that was actually filmed (non cartoon)had a horrible graininess to it. Colours were still fine, however. admitingly, I'm using a cheaper end component cables (RCA -- not a/v, they're RCA brand RGB components $40). HD cable is coming tommorrow. If that's fine, I'll upgrade the components and see if that helps. The DVD is a progessive sony 575. Anybody who knows about grainness: do I upgrade the components, the DVD to 720p or both -- the latter may not be an option for me at this point. Any ideas?

new buyer,

See how things look when you get your HD Cable box, but even with that analog channels will not look as good as HD and digital. What you can do is turn down the contrast and sharpness for the SD channels. I have mine set at about 65 for contrast and 42 for sharpness. Also make sure that your connections are tight. If your analog channels still don't look very good after you get the new HD box you can also try using a splitter. I have a splitter with one end of the cable going to the cable box and the other end going diectly to the TV. The SD channels look a lot clearer this way. Another thing that I did that made a big difference was to add a Motorola Signal Booster. All channels look a lot better. I'm sure that there are other brands that would work well too.

I recieved a 62HM94 2 weeks ago. The best pictures on a TV I've ever seen. I can't wait for the cable card to come tomorrow so I can see what the HDTV channels look like.

After having this set 52HMX84 for 3 weeks and experienced with playing , tweaking , setting, observing........Here are my takes:

SD signal = surprisingly very good even with all the stretch modes. I think it is all depended on which channel of broastcasting. (I live in Canada, so I have regular SD sattelite with Express Vu and the signal I am getting is 93%-95%and this definetly help a lot for the PQ). I am using S-Video connection here.

DVD looks very good even with a lower end Toshiba DVD-player via Component Video connection .

I also just picked up a Tosh SD-5970 DVD player last night and hooked it up with the orginal HDMI cable that came with the player. I put in a few movies to test with various setting and here are my conclusion:

1/ I don't think PQ from HDMI is any better than component video and yes the picture is grainy on some movies or some scenes but again that may change from Movies to Movies and maybe with a better quality HDMI connector it may improve. (I am planning to pick up a better HDMI connector today).

2/ 'Ghosting' issue.......I haven't really notice anything when playing the movies yet ,except for the word "WELCOME" when you first turn on your DVD player. I came close to the TV to take a look and it seem like there is a double image with white cloud or circle around the word "WELCOME".

Will keep you guys updated on this 'Ghosting' issues.

Pixelation = As someone mention it before either it is in this forum or from AVS forum (I can't remember) that Toshiba DLP is bad with pixelation.
As suggested by one of the threader, I put in the "Gladiator' to check it out .
First Chapter, when Maximus moving forward with cloud and fog in the background (with the camera slowly panning)I kind of seeing a little distortion on Maximus face but my wife said She did not see anything. Now that is confuse me.
(I guess I will get more friend to come over my place and check it out again...:-))
By having said all this about pixelation, there is definitly one thing that bother me is when there is a fast action scene in movies or watching fast moving sport like hockey.....It just make my eyes tired and feel dizzy. (Mind you, I am sitting about 12 to 13 feet from the TV). I hope it's just me (I have a very bad eyes sight...my glasses are very thick....:-)) not the TV as some of you out there don't want to hear this. Will find out more about this.

HD signal = I don't have it hook up yet......still deciding on which company to go with.

Audio = Again surprise.........The sound from the Tosh speakers are really good. I think it's better than most of other DLP's brand.........!

Noise from the Fan = what noise.........? Don't hear anything..........

Rainbow Effect = Have not seen it yet............until then............:-)

Design = I think it is a bit to big with the side speakers.......other than that , the overall design is OK !

With all said and done, I am still playing and trying to tweak the setting.

One last thing, I am surprised that no one have mention this so far in any forum.

1/ With the normal room light @ night (not day light)..........when your TV is off, have any of you seen or see a grey line or grey spot right in the middle of the screen but when you turn off your room light it is OK ! the grey spot or grey line just disappears. To be sure about this , I went to a few stores including BB, Future Shop
and pointed to all the sale staffs and they all agreed with me the grey spot or the grey line is there and they said they will contact the Service Techs to find out. Now surprisingly, the Samsung DLP also has it ( right in the centre just like the TOSH), but not on the Panasonic DLP.
The question now Is this some kind of a normal room light reflection on the DLP or something else ?

Sorry guys.....!:-) for the long post but I am sure this will help a lot of folks out there to decide if the TOSH is the one to go.

I just hooked up my TV yesterday, and yes, I have the light in thr top middle. Goes away when the TV is on, so I don't care. I have bigger problems. Quality of DVD PQ is awful. HD cable is coming within the hour, so I'll see how that looks. If it looks good, I'll upgrade the components on the DVD. If it still looks bad, back she goes...

HDLP, i think you're experiencing the same thing a Amar posted above, and that is a normal internal reflection of the ambient lighting of the room. that's normal and nothing to be worried about since you only see it when the tv is off. you probably wouldn't see it if toshiba/samsung had very reflective screens like the mitsubishi, but then you would see reflections when the tv was on! better to live with harmless reflections when the tv is off, than annoying reflections when the tv is on. :-)

We have the same Toshiba 52HMX84 and agree completely. If you are mainly interested in watching DVDS, even with our great Denon DVD player, this is not a good tv to buy. Unfortunatley they store from which we purchased, doesn't sell samsung and won't let us exchange. We have seen the same DVDs on my Uncles and are very dissapointed watching the same movie at our house.

** Connecting a PC to a Toshiba DLP -- DVI to HDMI**

Hi there,
After not being able to find ANYTHING on the net about this, I went ahead and tried it myself... despite the Toshiba warning, etc... it works! I have the 52HM84 model, with only one HDMI and no DVI port. Everything I read said you have to have a special video card with DVI-D instead of DVI-I... this isn't true. My vid card is a Sappire Radeon 9550 with 3 outputs (Composite, regular monitor and DVI). I have it connected to my computer monitor and ALSO connected to my dlp with a DVI to HDMI cable I bought from "lenexpo-electronics.com"

Basically all I did was set my computer monitor to 1280x720 resolution @ 60Hz refresh (which is the max resolution of the dlp) turned on the Toshiba and it works great.

There are some overscan issues (meaning some of the computer monitor image is cut off on the Toshiba) but everything looks really really good.

If you have any questions email me @ grapevine@canada.com.

I have found an excellent PQ using the Harmon Kardon DVD 22 with my Toshiba 52HM 94. It is almost HD quality. I have used the most recent Samsung and Toshiba DVD upscalers with the HDMI input and found it too dark hence they were returned.

alanC,

There is a problem with the TV Guide that Toshiba is working on and they have a fix on the way. It has been discussed a lot in The Toshiba DLP Thread in the AVs forums:

GrandTrain, try to use a lower resolution like 1152x648 to avoid overscan problem. Glad that DVI adapter works for you. Now you get the best of both worlds.

I've had the 52HMX84 for nearly 3 weeks. This set rocks! Here is my take.

DVD - Panny S97 upconvert with HDMI, picture is great. Older DVD's look grainy, but the high quality discs are incredible. Stars Wars - Episode II looks near HD.

xbox - Halo 2 is THE perfect game for this set, no lag. Project Gotham 2 is also spectacular.

HD - Picture is perfect. I do notice pixelization in some fast motion (basketball close-ups). I am disappointed that most of the major network's programs are not filmed in DD5.1. Most are 2 channel. Fortunately, Fox broadcasts football in DD5.1. I am looking forward to the best superbowl party I've ever had!

Bought the toshiba 51H84 rear projection crt tv last weekend. Thought I had did my research, however not totally happy. Picture looks great from back beyond 15-20 ft. but up closer you diffently see lines. Had a 46" Rca crt tv prior to this and loved it. Don't know if I should go smaller like the 42" Sony grand wega rear proj.Lcd Hdtv . Any suggestions?

Noobie, no, the Toshiba HM94s do not swivel.

Gerald Cristic,
If you're talking about the reception of SD channels you're going to see that on any big screen TV. See above posts from Jim777 and myself regarding things you can do to improve the picture. We both have Toshiba HM94s but the fixes should be similar.

Hello everyone.

I got my 52HM84 yesterday. I have researched the TV through Consumer Reports. The TV was not ranked the best but a very good performer and was on their list of "Quick Picks".

I setup up everything and when my wife came in, she was simply blown away by the TV and was extremly happy even after a damage of 3250$ (I knew I had picked the right woman ;) ).

Anyways, on a more serious note, I noticed that the DVD quality was pretty lame (very grainy)on the toshi. I decided to buy a component cable and used it from the DVD (Philips DVI-642) to the TV. The problem is that I can see the movie on the TV BUT everything is in blue! Do I have to activate something on the TV or the DVD to get the colors?

Note that the dvd player is a progressive scan DVD and until now I was very sastisfied with this player since it plays everything you can think of (DivX,mpg, avi,VCD, SVCD, MP3, displays GIFs, JPG...)

Anon ... Are you using component cables from the DVD to the TV? If so, this happened to me also and I found that I had two of the 3 video component cables reversed. It's a "maybe".

Also make sure that your cable are hooked up firmly. I had a similar experience and then discovered that the cables were loose.

Sharon, thanks for asking. (I'm the original newbuyer. It seems a registered poster has taken the name, so I can't use it).
SB part went great. This is the first time most of my friends saw the TV and they were blown away at the HD (SB had probably one of the best HD broadcasts I've seen to date). Even my wife had to sit and watch for half an hour.

My graininess issue (pay attention anonomous) has been fixed. As you recall, DVD didn't look good at all --especially older DVDs. I upgraded my components, and made only a slight diff. So then, I upgraded my DVD player to a HD LG capable of 720p. It did the trick. Perhaps because its now a natural 720p, and there is no upconversion required, but it worked. Old DVDs are still slightly grainy (much better than before), but newer DVDs (released within the past couple years) are amazing.
take care Sharon, and thanks for all your help previously.

Thank you all for your replies concerning post (Posted on Monday, February 07, 2005 - 04:17 pm by Anonymous), you guys rock!

I found the problem! I had to enable COMPONENT display on my DVD Pilips DVD player and also enable PROGRESSIVE SCAN. What a world of difference!!!

I only had Toshiba 52HM84 for 3 days and it is a bit early to give some feedback but I am soooooo happy with it.

Is Toshiba's TV Guide working for anyone yet? I got an email form Toshiba today saying "The TV guide issue has been resolved by the TV Guide company sending out a software download." However my guide still is not working.

Sharon:

I have had the same problem. No guide for 6 weeks. I called Toshiba Customer Service again tonight (5th time) and was told that it still was not working and they didn't know when it would be fixed.

It has been somewhat strange. Initially about two days after I set up the TV Guide, a screen promted me to select from 4 cable services (all Cablevision providers with different code numbers). I selected the one entiitled "Cablevision Digital" based upon a phone call to Cablevision. About 2 days later 11 stations appeared in the "Change Channel Display" area of the TV Guide setup, but none were correct. When I changed the zip code to try to reset, that data disapeared and nothing else has happened since. I just e-mailed customer service to detail the problem. We'll see what happens.

I have never had the Guide and it seems as though you get a different answer from Customer Support depending on who you talk to. The email I got today was from Scott at Toshiba Customer Serice from this email address: customer_support@tacp.com
I am using a DVR STB from my cable company since they don't have cable cards available yet. For that input I can use the TV Guide supplied by the cable company. But, I also have a cable going directly to the TV for my SD channels because I get a much better picture that way. I have that cable connected to Ant 1 and that is the input I want the Toshiba TV Guide for. In the set up I chose" No Cable" Box since the cable is actually bypassing the cable box for that input. How do you have things set up? I've even tried different zip codes to see if that helpred but it didn't.

It just do9esn't work yet. I've talked to the service people many times. I've gotten answers from "it's working now to indefinate". The motorola ccable cards won't work either...and since that's all Comcast has I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and get a cable box.....or demand that Toshiba take baCK THE TV, THE STAND AND THE SYMBIO.

Believe it or not after 6 weeks my TV guide just started working. Last night I went into the Change Channel Display in the TV Guide setup and found 340 channels listed all in the off setting. I went through them turning on the ones appropriate to my service plan and this morning most of them have programming data. I live on Long Island and use Cablevision of Woodbury with a NDS cable card from Cablevision. It is connected directly from the cable via Ant 1. It may be that the software fix that you were advised about takes some time before it goes through the system and is reflected in the nightly downloads to the TV's through the various PBS channels.

It's funny that I spoke to a Toshiba rep yesterday just prior to going home and they had no idea when the problem was going to be fixed. Great communication.

Help!! Just purchased Toshiba 52HM94 last week, and not happy with a number of channels looking grainy. Signal is coming in through sat. dish, and we are sitting a good 10ft away from the tv. I am thinking something on the tv is not set right. Biggest disappointment is with the sporting channels -- very grainy. Again we have a dish so all signals are digital and some HD. Basketball on ESPN and ESPN 2 looks awful. Even the Duke game the other night on ESPN HD was grainy.

Greg, In case you are, you shouldn't be watching SD on widescreen, no matter how far away you sit. These Tvs are not made for SD. I personally don't mind it, as long as it's in 4:3 display (with the bars). Now, if you have HD looking grainy, then you have a problem, IMO, or simply have VERY high standards. Keep in mind, not all "HD channels" broadcast HD programs all the time. In fact most only show HD shows during prime-time.
again, I can understand SD being an issue for some people, but in the two months I've been poking around on these threads I've heard of very little complaints (if at all) in regards to HD. I watched the SB last weekend, and it was simply amazing.
You may also try upgrading the components you're using with the HD reciever if they're the basic ones from the cable/sat company

I finally called Toshiba again on Friday and was told that the person handling the TV Guide problem would call me back in two to three business days. They went through all of my setting with me and I have everything set up right. I'm glad that yours is finally working. Maybe the fix is just taking longer to travel west!

I watch SD on my Toshiba 62HM94 a lot since my cable company doesn't carry the major networks in HD yet. As a matter of fact, even though I have digital cable not everything is digital, again including the major networks. As I mentioned in previous posts I am using a splitter to split my cable signal with one cable going directly to the ANT 1 connection on the TV. When I want to watch a SD channel I just switch to that input and the picture is pretty clear that way.

Toshiba 52HM94 -- our local cable's digital package (with a couple HD channels) does not give good reception in our area, so I went with dish network. Are you saying that a dish should not be watched on a widescreen, unless 4:3 display?

Greg,
Make sure your getting a good signal from your Dish. Have you tried using a regular Antenna to bring in local HDTV channels? I use mine because I have a Big Dish and only get locals that way. You'll have to do an automatic channel programming. I was shocked that we had them. They were only visible through the turner in the TV. Channels were listed as 3.1 or 5.1.

Try it.

I also went to a local TV store that carried my TV with other brands and had them put on the local Satellite (direct TV). Not the Big stores but the smaller stores that wont be amping the signal. If its not the same call Toshiba to send out an inspector.

How do the DVD's look?

MichaelB,

Thanks for the info. Haven't gotten an antenna yet, but looking into it (any suggestions -- local channels are broadcast from about 50 miles away).

How do the big stores amp their signals to make them so clear? Can I amp my dish signal?

DVD's look good, and some channels look good, but a lot look very grainy -- esp ESPn & ESPN2.

Just got my 46hm84 over the weekend. Haven't had much time to play around with it, but so far it seems to be working well. Comcast came out over the weekend to hook up the cable tv service, but I'm having them come out again on Wednesday to check the signal strength because the analog/SD channels are pretty bad. I wonder if I need a signal booster. I still have my directv tivo service connected and the channels look better coming from the satellite (which are all digital of course).

Does anyone know if there is a way to have the tv display the type of signal that is being transmitted to the tv (e.g., 480p, 720p, 1080i)?

Still very frustrated with the TV being grainy. Will take Michael's suggestion and stop at some local stores and see how they are getting their signal, and what their settings are. At this point, I will do or buy anything to help that picture look clearer. Finding myself watching tv in my bedroom, and not on my new 3K tv. Ready to box it back up!

Greg,

I don't have Dish so I don't know thay you're not getting good reception but I don't think it's the TV's problem. Try calling the Dish company and have them come out and check a few things. I have the Toshiba 62HM94 and was very pleased with the picture right out of the box exceot for the SD channels. I have a HD cable box so I used a splitter to split the cable signal beween the cable box and the TV with one cable going directly to the TV. The SD channels look very clear that way so I just change inputs on the Tv when I want to watch a SD channel. I also installed a Motorola Signal Booster which helped an enormous amount. I do know from talking to other people that you should get a much better picture than you say you are with the Dish. As I said, I would call the Dish company.

Guys,

I have the 52HM84 and I just go my digital cable box. The HD channels will be enabled by the cable company tomorrow (Rogers). I have already plugged in everything and noticed that the quality from analog is better then the digital (not HD since I don't have it yet to compare). When I connect the cable straight to the TV, i get a better quality than plugging it to the digital box. When it is on digital, I see small vertical lignes on the TV and it is a bit blurry. Is'nt digital suppose to be better quality?

For the DVD, I use component cables and progressive scan and it is much better but I still find that sometimes the quality is not the best (depending on the movie). Note that I am about 10 feet away from the TV.

What can I do to get better quality here for digital channels? I've got 10 days to return the TV and I want to try everything I can first.

Please advice!

Sharon et al,

Grainy 52hm94

Thanks for all the suggestions. We haven't had dish company back out, but have talked with them many times over the phone. Took MichaelB's suggestion and went to the local stores to see what local channels and non-hd channels look like through dish and direct. It's funny how they only want to show you the HD channels, and hesitate to show local channels or other non-HD channels (the local and non-HD channels weren't a whole lot better then what we are getting). I did upgrade cables, added a sat signal amp, and surge protector to clear up the power. The picture is a bit better. Also played with some setting which helped. Next step is to add an OTA antenna for locals in HD. Looking into an antenna now (don't want a big ugly thing on the roof).

The fast moving sports on ESPN and ESPN2 are not clear unless in HD, so have to deal with that. Hopefully football and baseball will be clearer.

Thanks for the help.

Anonymous,

Even though the cable box is digital all of the channels are not. Many of the channels are still broadcast in analog. Ask your cable company for a list that will tell you which channels are digital and which are not. Connecting a cable directly to the TV will normally give a clearer picture for analog channels. I use a splitter to split the cable signal between the TV and the cable box and use the direct connection when I want to watch analog channels. I also installed a Motorola Cable Booster which really did a good job improving the picture on both inputs. Also, have you tried calibrating your TV at all? Turning down the contrast, and especially the sharpness makes the non HD channels look better.

i am ready to buy. the toshiba 62 and 52 inch sets have been at the top of my list ,BUT i must add i am only concerned with DVD quality. i barely watch TV ,and HDTV is not even available where i live.
i brought my Panasonic Progressive scan player (does not upconvert ) to BB with "singing in the rain" dvd and auditioned the 52 inch set.this is not a widescreen movie and i did not stretch it to fill the screen. i thought the picture was ok ,but "soft",with a lack of detail and sharpness that i can see on my old 35 inch Mitsubishi CRT.so my question is ,is this about the best i can expect? i took the same set-up to CC and the Samsung 50 inch Kirk and felt the same.i have read in this forum about the players that upconvert the signal ,but is the difference drastically noticable ,since i thought the TV upconverted the signal anyway. if the 52 inch is only ok ,should i even consider the 62 ? (i will be 11 to 13 feet away)does anyone have any suggestions to someone who really only wants a bigscreen TV for DVDs ? maybe an ENHANCED DEFINITION PLASMA ,which i believe are at a DVDs native 480 ? ANY SUGGESTIONS would be appreciated.

Hi everyone,

I just turned on my 52hm84 tv this morning and I no longer have any sound coming out from the TV. The audio cables are connected from my digital box to the TV. so I decided to connect the analog cable coming out from the wall directly to the TV in ANT1. When I put the TV on ANT1 input, I see the picture but I still do not get any sound. I have notice that every time a switch channels now, I get a black box (takes around 35-45 % of the screen) after watching the channel for few seconds. Anyone knows what is happening.

HELP!

I no longer have any sound coming out from the TV. The audio cables are connected from my digital box to the TV. so I decided to connect the analog cable coming out from the wall directly to the TV in ANT1. When I put the TV on ANT1 input, I see the picture but I still do not get any sound.

there's an option to turn the in-built speakers on/off - did you try fondling with the Audio menu??? If not then try it - it's possible that the speakers are turned off.

Sasan,

How do you have the sound configured for the ANT1 input? Are you routing things through a receiver? If so you will have to add an audio cable from the TV to the receiver for that connection also and then change the source on both the receiver and the TV when watching ANT1. I use an optical cable for the sound for ANT1.

I am not routing through a receiver for the TV. I called Toshiba directly and after troubleshooting over the phone, I have been told to contact a toshiba reseller for servicing. Since I got my TV at Best Buy less than 30 days ago, I was able to ask them to replace the TV with another new TV in case the one I have is a lemon. I'll have another 30 days money back guarantee once I receive the new TV... I want to give it another try with the Toshiba because it is the one I like best.

Thank you all for your input ;)

so i've had my toshiba 46hm94 for 2 days and i love it. but i have (at least) 4 questions:

1. how do i get into the advanced color settings? the basic ones don't let me adjust separate colors and the reds and greens are still way too saturated.

2. on "natural" pic size, some programming is still stretched and doesn't look "natural" at all. is there a way to override this so that it makes these programs 4:3 with the gray/black bars on the side?

3. what's everyone's feeling on DVI/HDMI vs. component for cable box and/or DVD hookups?

4. what are some features i should be looking at for a new DVD player? any specific models under $400 that i should be looking at that pair well w/ this set?

thanks so much. this forum has been indespensible in my research.

auguestwest,

You can't get into the advanced color settings to adjust the individual colors separately. There is a service mode but you could really mess up your TV if you don't know what you're doing. Try turning the color to a lower setting and also adjust the tint if needed.
Programing shouldn't look stretched on "natural" picture size. Natural shows the picture as close to the original format as possible. Are you sure you have it in natural?
I tried DVI/HDMI cables but found that I got a better picture with component cables.

thanks for the reply sharon.

yes, i'm positive that the pic size is in natural, yet many channels (CNN for example) are stretched out.

The service manual for the 52/62HMX94 is posted at:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&postid=5112922&highlight=servic e+menu#post5112922

I know it is basically the same as the 52/62HM94 and provides instructions for getting into the service menu. However, it may not be applicable to the 46HM94 and in any event you should consult with someone who has experience adjusting these settings before trying yourself.

I have read these posts...and they are very informative. But I need to know if the 44" - NHM84 is worth the $2700. My main concern is picture quality. I only have standard cable at the moment and I don't want to spend this much cash and find I can't watch the T.V. I have a good DVD player and may get a dish in the distant future. quick poll...Is the 44"NHM84 a good t.v. ????? and is it worth it????

anonymouse, the 44NHM84 pic quality is as good as the 46HM84, although the 44NHM84 is manufactured by LG. Standard cable quality is only so so but you will have similar experience with any other DLP or LCD RPTV. DVD quality is range from okay to very good depends on the players.

For more info about the 44NHM84, try here:

Do you have any other recomendations for a big screen. I have been reading the posts, but the problem is there are a million products and a million opinions. I know each TV has advantages and disadvantages, but I want to make the most informed opinion I can.

The AVS forums have a lenthly discussion on the Toshiba DLPs. You should be able to find an answer here:http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=438276
Try page 25. There ia a comparison chart of the different models.

I just got a 62HM94 ...and i find the SD programming extremely grainy and pixelated.

Surprisingly the Mits 62525 that i had before and returned bcos of glare was displaying the SD channels extremely well. with repect to that
the tosh is no camparison. Everything is same only the TV changed....i'm thinking may be I shot myself on my foot by going for the tosh.

Anybody can help me with anything I can do for better pic with the Tosh.

I thought abt the signal booster but my DisH Network system shows a close to 90% signal strength and above all if the signal were weak it would have shown badly in the previous set too!!

I am cnofused ...any help?

This television is no good. Bought it December of 2004. Popping sounds occurring and the sound would get louder or softer. Now the television has not turned on in 2 days. The part they need to fix it is back ordered until the middle of April. If smart do not buy it.

I am interested in the Toshiba DLP and wonder if I need the 62HM84 or 94. I have Direct TV and will subscribe to their HD service. However don't you need an over the air antenna to get local channels in HD? Which would require the 62HM94?

I bought the 94 just to have the built in HD tuner, and avoid the headache and money of purchasing an additional HD converter box down the road. I am also on satellite, and yes you will need an ota antenna to get local channels in HD. There are some really sweet antennas that aren't as ugly as the old ones, and they aren't very expensive. I also love the remote with the 94 compared the the 84.

I purchased a the 52HM84 and we love the picture quality on all channels. There are definitely some grainy SD pictures, but I knew this ahead of time.

One problem we are running into is a single vertical line about 2 inches from the left side of the screen. A tech is coming out soon - but I've found some other owners who had this same problem - but usually they have mulitple vertical lines. The line appears as static and is probably 1-2 pixels wide. Its intermittent and is not dependent upon the video input or source being used (Component or HDMI or S Video).

Anyone else run into this problem?

I am thinking of returning it, and then upgrading to the 62 inch model.

I found the 62 inch at Big Georges in Ann Arbor, MI for $2799 (no base or warranty - each of these items are approx $350).

Is it worth paying more for the cinema series? Does it include anything more than better speakers and an additional HDMI port?

Also - what do you experts think about the new "integrated" sets?

The cinema series difference is mainly the extra port and the black bezel as opposed to grey. I'm getting the integrated set myself. You may want to check for the closest ABC Warehouse as I think you can get a better deal. The 62HMX94 is advertised on the web site for $3419.

Just purchased a the 52HMX94, but saddened to find an eraser sized black dot on the bottem right of the screen. Obvious dead pixels right? Well the place I bought it from suggested that I should wait a week for a tech to stop by to repair the jet black pixels. He said that LCD pix and DLP pix are different and with a new light engine, everything will be OK. Should I try it or just return it.

I am begining to wonder about the quality of the Toshiba DLP tvs. I am also begining to wonder if its worth the wait/expense for a 3-chip set? Or if I should just get an LCD projection TV since it seems to be more reliable. What are your guys thought? I have to imagine that the 3 chip sets will be expensive and I'm not sure the incremental improvement is worth the wait or expense. Thanks for your thoughts.

Has anyone had any experience hooking up a PC to the 44NHM84 ? I'm very disappointed that both the VGA input and DVI input restrict resolution to only 1024x780 thus losing the full potential of the tv size. I was hoping that hooking a computer using the DVI cable would overcome that - but no. Why does the TV distinguish between DVI-DTV and DVI-PC ? It makes playing DVDs on your computer (widescreen versions) completely useless.

Okay, I am down to the wire on a decision between the Toshiba 62HM94 and the Sony KDF-60WF655. They are both about $3K ($2800) and I have only two questions both of which will make my decision as to which TV I will purchase.
1) The "Color Wheel" with the DLP; I have read where this can make noise even loader than the fan and the moving parts bother me a little bit. Is there any noise that any of you have experienced with the Color Wheel and should I be concerned about the moving parts in a DLP vs. the D-ila or the LCD.
2) Does anyone know about the degradation in an LCD because of the organic material that is used? That would definitely be a deciding factor for me.
Obviously I want a TV that will last the longest, provide the best color reproduction without having to constantly tweak the convergence settings. (Which is something I read on CNET is a problem with DLP's)
I truly appreciate any input you have out there.
Thanks.

Thank you. I figured it was an extremely rare problem with the color wheel making noise. I only found one post anywhere about it. (Not in this forum) Does the extra moving parts not concern you though?
What about the constant tweaking to keep the convergence corrected? This was actually a "CON" listed of the DLP by CNET's technology review of DLP RPTV's.

John,

To be honest I have no idea what you're talking about when you say constant tweaking to keep the convergence corrected". I don't have to do any constant tweaking of anything right now. Once I got my set calibrated for each of the two inouts I'm using I rarely have to make any changes to the settings.

Here is an article about degradation of LCD. Do take in considertion that it is a torture test and for projectors where the light intesity is much greater than RP TV. But it did factor in my decision as I have 2 kids and TV's can be left on. Read about it

Thank you both for the input. I am probably going to get the Toshiba 62HM94.
I have read several bad stories about Toshiba's support but the bottom line is, they still corrected the problem. (It just took six months in some cases.) I have to admit that worried me but other than that and the moving parts of the color wheel, I am almost locked in on my decision.
Thanks again.

Greetings there everyone, I haven't been able to get either DVE or Avia so as of now I'm using the default settings on tbe 52HMX84. Sports is a good look for videogames and movie is a great choice for movies as it allows perfect black levels. Now I'm wondering what are the members' findings here using Low Lamp mode for Sports & Movie. Note that I would like to keep warm for movie mode but with suggested settings provided by members here. ;-)

Note that I'm using HDMI for my DVD if that should help.

I have Avia but plan to get DVE (I believe Circuit city has it because you can order it from their web site)since Avia doesn't have a test for BTB. Each display is different but with my player I ended up with the following settings.

Color Temp: Medium
Low Lamp
Contrast 65
Brightness 57
Color 59
Tint +3
Sharpness 0

You say you only hear fan noise for a couple of minutes when the set is turned off. Is this just because there is no sound through the speakers then? Is the fan noise audible when the sound is turned off while the set is still on? If it is audible, at what distance is it audible? Unfortunately, you can't hear this in a noisy showroom the way you can in a quiet home. Would anyone else care to comment? Thanks.

This happens when the Quick Restart feature is enabled only and is good if you are the type of person who turns off the set every now and then. It stays like this for 5 minutes. The fan inaudible when viewing programs on the HMX, the manual even states that its good to have the quick restart feature so I hope that bit of info helps.

I never hear the fan in my 62HMX94. I know if you use a cable card there is an additional fan but I won't have that installed until this weekend so I don't know if it is audible or not.

P.S. I also use the "quick start" feature.

I have bought my Toshiba 62hmx94 a couple months ago and have amassed a great amount of knowledge. After reading reviews and doing research for over a year I ended up with the toshiba. My wife got tired of me delaying the purchase and demanded I make a decision, so I did. But to be honest the technology is really good but if I was willing to wait 2 more years it will be 10 times better. But here is what I have found and I hope it helps all you people out there.

First the Toshiba is an awesome set, I love the quality of their products (I have 3 sets from them). I love the fact that they are American made, and they have ALWAYS had the sharpest, clearest and most color picture I have had over any other TV set. BUT, their DLP models do lag behind Mitsubishi with one explicit issue. See, Toshiba is like Bose trying to strife towards true representation of the picture (sound for Bose) while Mitsubishi is like Polk which strives for lots of color and bang. So it depends on what kind of person you are. For example, the Toshiba SD and cable TV picture is grainy but that is not because it is wrong but because Toshiba is displaying exactly what it received. While Mitsubishi will massage the display with a complex algoritm for smoothing and sharpening lines. Toshiba does not have this feature, so what you get is crap in, crap out. Toshiba however takes more time to make sure the colors are exact and correct for the display, while the Mitsubishi does not. But the Toshiba has a faster processor and less algorithms thus making the display update faster while the Mitsubishi has a much slower update and thus makes it less desirable for gaming. Toshiba also goes above this and added a Gaming mode (only supported on the 62hmx94 model and no other model including the 62hm94) this mode allows you to turn off certain algorithms to make the display even faster! But the disadvantage is you have to play the game in 4:3 display instead of widescreen. You can play it in widescreen but the Tosh just stretches the whole display. I prefere to play the game with Game Mode off and in their special stretch mode which stretches the sides of the display but leaves the middle untouched. Mitsubishi also supports this special stretch mode. My biggest complaint about the Tosh is when watching 4:3 mode they fill in the blank widescreen areas with gray instead of black. Yuck, the gray is very distracting, so I don't watch anything in 4:3 mode. The Mitsubishi anti-glare screen is a joke, it sucks in comparison to the Toshiba, its screen displays hardly any glare. I have to say my number one favorite feature of the Tosh is its ability to output digital audio. This is a great idea! Now instead of piping all my audio and video through my receiver I just out a single digital audio line to my receiver, which cuts down on signal interface for both my audio and video by not going through the receiver. Plus I us my TV to switch video rather than my receiver which allows me to get the full affects of using HDMI without worrying about downgrading the signal through my receiver because no affordable receiver supports HDMI. Thats also another thing Mitsubishi does not support HDMI. I also like the ability to later upgrade to a digital recorder from Tosh using the built in firewire connection.

For those of you questing picture quality with the Toshiba, here is what I found works best...

With standard cable turn down the sharpness level to less than 25 percent this will clear up a lot of the grainy picture quality.

With SD signals there is realy no way to clear this up because alot of cable or satellite companies compress the hell out of it so you get a lousy picture, the best thing to do is stand 15 feet away from the picture (for a 62 in Tosh) and it will look much better. If you sit too close then it will look worse and more grainy because you will see the imperfections of compression. (which brings me to another point, whats the point of having a higher resolution if your just going to comress it such that the number of unique pixels is equal to the same resolution as the lower resolution broadcast, but that is another debate)

DVD playback on the Toshiba is awsome if the DVD compression is kept light. Again, just like the SD signal if they compress it too much you will notice every signal compression detail in the picture for the Tosh. I have to say I have not had a problem with any DVD widescreen disks that were made within the past 4 years, some of the cheaper earlier ones look like crap. It does not matter what brand TV set you get, only watch widescreen movies on a widescreen set because many dvd players will stretch a 4:3 signal very poorly which your TV will have much better options for stretching the signal. The problem is you have to set your DVD for what display your tv is. So inorder to get the best results you have to switch your DVD player back and forth from widescreen to 4:3 which is a real pain.

HD signal is awesome on the Toshiba, much better than the Mitsubishi. Because again the Toshiba is best at displaying true representation of the picture which the Mitsubish is best at massaging a bad image to make it look better. HD signals need no massaging to look better.

The bottom line is get a Mitsubishi if you don't plan to do games or use HDMI and want to watch a lot of SD and cable signals. And you plan to put the TV in the basement or extremely low light areas.

Get a Toshiba if you want to play games, use HDMI, route all video through the TV instead of the receiver, watch a lot of DVD movies, want to watch great HD signals (which means your investing in the future since there are so few signals now).

If your a gamer, remember this year they are going to release some of the new HD gaming systems (720P and 1080i) support, which will be awesome on this set. Don't get stuck with a set that can not keep up with the display, the Gaming Mode on the 62HMX94 and 52HMX94 will really shine once that comes out, the update is 10x better than any other DLP out there, period.
And no LCD or DILA is going to beable to compete.

Robert,

I just want to correct one statement you made. Although I have the 62HMX94 another poster in a different forum confirmed the HM94 series also DOES have the "game mode". I have to accept his word since he has the set and Toshiba still doesn't have the HM94 manual available on-line. You are correct that the HM84 and HMX84 sets DO NOT have this feature.

I do agree with the gray bars being distracting but fortunately the Toshiba stretch modes are pretty good. I still can't fathom what they were thinking and can only guess it is a hold over from CRT sets where "burn-in" was an issue. Obviously with DLP sets this is no longer a concern. I believe Hitachi is the only other manufacturer that uses gray bars.

You definitely do get spoiled watching HD on this set and I try to avoid watching SD as much as possible, especially through the STB. It's not until you get a big screen that you realize how bad the PQ is on a SD signal.

JVC also uses annoying Gray side bars. However, if you use a Motorola cable box your in luck. If you turn the 4:3 override to "off" the motorola box will send the SD signal with black side bars. I prefer this to stretching the picture.

Here's what I think about my new Toshiba 46 inch DLP.
I want my old Toshiba big screen back. I got it ten years ago and the picture was terrific..even in our small room.. until a couple years ago when the tube started to get weak and the imagegot progressivly dimmer. It was time for a new one.
So,off to the store I go to shop for an HDTV because that's the future, you know.
But, what no salesman explained to me..as I gazed in amazement at the spectacular picture on the HD TV's..all tuned-in to a HD channel, of course, is that when you watch regular TV on these sets..the picture is crap!
Nobody mentioned that it might be a little better if you spend some more money on a signal booster..or to split the cable coming into the house..but basically the channels that I watch most often, will still look like crap.
Yeah, the six or seven HD channels that are available on our system look great on this new 26 hundred dollar television but HBO coming-of-age teen sex movies and PBS travelogues aren't worth the loss of the history channel, NBC prime time and all of the others which are now unwatchable.
Someone wrote, "watch from farther away.."
What's the purpose of a big screen if not to enjoy a big clear picture at a reasonable distance? And, how about the frustrated guy who now goes into the bedroom to watch his favorite shows on his old tube set because his new DLP distorts everthing except HD? Tragic.
I wish I'd have given technology a few more years before shelling out hard earned cash for this thing. Ugh.
I know all you tech heads think this is great..and there's no denying HD is a wonder (what few channels there are) but the tradeoff sucks.
If you go HDTV shopping..just make sure the sales person shows you what your favorite tv shows look like on a DLP, LCD or Plasma.
Check out a basketball game that isn't in HD on an HD set.
Sorry for going on here, but I'm torked.

Hi all, 1st post here. I have a 42 inch Toshiba rear Projection HD. ( pre-DVI Input ) ...and it is AWESOME!!! The HD broadcasts on Direct TV are mesmerising. I also bought a Terk antenna ( screws right onto the sat dish ) for OTA HD broadcasting....now I can get close to 20 more local channels in HD ( including Boston 30+ miles away ). Here is my question

************************************
I like the Toshiba TheaterWide 52HM94 and I already have a HD reciever....the HMX series are for people who do not have a reciever correct? I have read the side by side comparisons between the 52HM84 and 952HM4.....but is the difference worth the couple of extra hundered dollars? I do not fully uderstand what you are getting that mekes it a better TV. Any input you can give on the 84 - 94 series comparison will be greatly apprieciated

I've seen the 52HM94 as low as $2200.00 delivered ( no tax ) are there any other ( better ) deals out there?

I think you are a little confused. The 94 series have the integrated tuners so they would be usueful to those who want QAM (cable)/ATSC (OTA) signals without a separate box or receiver. The HMX vs HM is mainly the second HDMI input and a black bezel as opposed to gray. There are a lot more differences between the 84 and 94 models than there is between HM and HMX.

For example, the 94 series has:

ATSC/QAM Tuners (Terrestrial/Cable)
Dolby Digital Audio Output (Optical)
CableCARD Slot (DCR - Digital Cable Ready )
TV Guide On-Screen
One-Touch HD Recording Control **
Live Pause / Rewind Capability **
Two IEEE1394 Ports (DTVLink)
Digital Encoder
OmniViewer Memory Card Slot (SD, SM, MS, CF,& MM)

** For use with the Toshiba Symbio recorder.
