I've had this t.v since christams, and have been somewhat dissapointed in the qualty. The picture is grainy, hockey games are blurry cause of the fast action, and it just doesnt look the way it did in the store. What are the best settings for this particular Tv

I have the same set and I've given up on getting outstanding PQ for regular cable. You must get HDTV! The PQ on it is fantastic, my family and friends are blown away by it. The SuperBowl was awesome in HDTV.

The problem for me is that my cable company only offers about 7 HDTV channels. I was thinking about getting VOOM which claims to have more HDTV channels.

Try it. You won't be disappointed.

it all depends on the signal you feed the Sony.
Are you using a progressive scanning DVD player? Thru the component output? (red, green, and blue RCA jacks) Is there a menu on the DVD player where you can change between INTERLACED and PROGRESSIVE output? HDTV broadcasts (thru component or DVI plug) has an even greater resolution than MOST DVD players.

You should not have to deal with grainy when doing progressive scan. I am currently dealing with this now as well. I getter better dvd performance going through S-video and setting the DRC settings to Cinema and then maxing out the clarity and reality settings on the x-y graph. Going through component cables won't allow you to pass the signal through the DRC chip which is kind of odd. I may return my Sony for the Hitachi. Not sure yet. I was looking for a better DVD player hoping that this was the problem. But I don't want to spend big $$$ on a Denon or even get a 1st generation DVI upscaling dvd player. I have the Sony 725 which should be good enough but it isn't. Later when the technology of the DVI upscalers improves and the price comes down for the good ones... then I'll buy in.

As for regular tv... I have Dish Network and even with the DRC cranked up it is very digitized on the more compressed channels. I immediately cancelled Dish and ordered DirecTV. That comes Sat so hopefully it will be better. All of my friends say that it will help. Cable I hear is awful but I suppose that it depends upon your provider and your area.

Just as a followup. I got the Samsung hd931 with the upconverter and I must say that in all modes it outperformed the Sony 725. The grainy appearance is mostly gone. Also to note is that there isn't a great deal of difference between the 480p, 720p and 1080i modes. Very slight but it is definitely better as you step up. I haven't seen any of the standard problems that folks point out with this player yet but I have only watched about 5 so far.

Also, DirecTV appears better on the major stations but just as poor or worse on lesser channels like WGN.
