Troy Heagy Unregistered guest | Follow the steps: (1) Record SVHS-ET onto standard VHS (w/ JVC VCR) (2) Insert SVHS-ET tape into older Panasonic Super-VHS VCR (3) Press play & the image is black-n-white with strange floating colors bands What's the deal? Is SVHS-ET a different standard than normal SVHS? troy |

Troy Heagy Unregistered guest | Thanks. So, what are the specs for SVHS-ET? troy |
Silver Member Username: SamijubalPost Number: 994 Registered: Jul-04 | Here is an explanation of S-VHS. |
Troy Heagy Unregistered guest | That link says SVHS-ET is the *same* as SVHS. It seems odd they'd invent a new acronym for the same standard. troy |
Silver Member Username: SamijubalPost Number: 997 Registered: Jul-04 | I see nowhere where it says it's the same. True S-VHS recording isn't possible on a standard VHS tape, VHS and S-VHS tapes are different. |
Troy Heagy Unregistered guest | Actually, you CAN record record the S-VHS signal on to a standard VHS: "Early in the life of the format [~1990], enthusiasts such as myself started to experiment with VHS tape formulations at SVHS quality. We found that we could drill a similar recognition hole into a standard VHS cassette and the SVHS VCR would then see this tape as an SVHS tape." "S-VHS tapes are simply a higher grade of VHS tape, and nothing more." https://www.ecoustics.com/electronics/products/articles/124304.html |
Troy Heagy Unregistered guest | P.S. I'm still looking for specs (bandwidth, frequency, et cetera) for S-VHS-ET. Anyone know where I can find it? troy |

They need this higher bandwidth to get the 400 lines of resolution that S-VHS has. Fooling the VCR into thinking it's an S-VHS tape will not get you S-VHS recordings. |
raybest Unregistered guest | Is it true that SVHS tapes copied to VHS tapes reduces the picture quality to VHS quality? I have been editing all my Hi8 and now Digital 8 camcorder tapes onto SVHS tape using an S-video cable. I have then sent copies from the S-video tapes to VHS tapes to my friends thinking they were getting better picture quality tapes. Sounds like I could have just copied direct from VHS tapes other than having SVHS quality for my own benefit. Ray |
Gold Member Username: SamijubalPost Number: 1036 Registered: Jul-04 | When copying to VHS the resolution will be 240 lines max, pathetic in today's world. That being said, the higher the source resolution the better the recording will look. But compared to the 400 lines of S-VHS, regular VHS is going to be poor quality. Use a DVD recorder if you want good quality. |
