New member Username: RevjoonbugPost Number: 2 Registered: Apr-05 | This is just a quick update; I will have a more detailed review after I've had a chance to really put it through the grind. To those who do not know of this player or is not familiar with Oppo, please read this benchmark: http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-bin/shootout.cgi?function=search&articles=all &type=DVD+Player&manufacturer=0&maxprice=0&deInt=0&mpeg=0#Oppo%20DigitalOPDV971H %20(DVI) This player comes with high expectations, obviously. But first impressions first: The packaging it came in was nice and well packed. After I opened the box (and the inner box which came with a handle(!)) I found the player coddled in a nice synthetic sleeve (to protect it from misc. scratches). I thought to myself that the packaging was even thought out well. But alas, it wasn't all good news after opening up the box. The player... well, what can I say? I'm used to certain level of aesthetics for my A/V gear and the Oppo player is ugly. And even uglier is the remote. Yes, I'm harping about industrial design. But hey, this $200 player is about playback, right? I placed the player on top of my Samsung HD-841 and connected the player to my TV (Samsung TX-P3075WH) using the DVI cable and optical out (to the receiver of course). I played a few discs including DVD-Rs (4:3, anamorphic 16:9) and commercial DVDs and did not play around with any of the settings for the player other than screen format (to view 4:3 discs in correct ratio) and audio settings (speaker options). The playback for all discs were great out-of-box. And from the looks of it, the playback is superior to my Samsung HD841 (less jitter, etc.). I will write more details about scene to scene comparisons between the two when I get a chance... but there is one oddity I should mention; I could not for the life of me get the player to display at 720p or 1080i using the DVI connection. Maybe it's the cable (?) that came with the samsung player but I highly doubt it. I just hope I don't have a bum unit... |

I just got the Panasonic TH-42PWD7UY and am now using the DVI blade I installed for satellite. I am thinking of switching the satellite to component and using the DVI for the Oppo. My first impressions (without much use yet) is that the sound and picture are really good just out of the box. It seems pretty amazing for a less than $200 player. |
RaveD Unregistered guest | The Oppo is not a very impressive player over component... it only does 480i. It should really be considered a DVI-only player. You can get a better component player for less money. |

My old expensive JVC XV-FA95GD DVD player has failing sound problems (sound cuts out) and I need to replace it soon. I happen to have the Samsung HD841 that I use for only SACD/DVD-A because I don't like the picture of the Samsung much compared to the JVC on my DLP. I think you have to setup the upconversion in the setup menus. I haven't seen the Oppo but they all seem to need some settings changed to do upconverting. |

I intend to link it to my ED Plasma by DVI and use the component connection from the satellite. However, I am pretty impressed with the way the Oppo looks and sounds just component and analog. |
