I Have a JVC XV-S60 DVD player which i bought about 3 years ago. IT doesn't have playing DVD-R's or +. on any of it's specs. Yet yesterday i put on in to see what would happen and it worked!
DVD menu came up 5.1 DD surround sound, and the rest. I borrowed some other burned ones from my friend. Anyone else have this kind of phenominom on any other player???

Most DVD players will play DVD-R discs, even if they don't say they will. I had a first generation Panasonic player from 1998 I sent to my sister, it plays them, my second generation Panasonic from 1999 plays them.

I would like to buy a dvd recorder and it says that it records on plus discs -- yet the portable player says that it plays standard dvds and dvd-r == so will it work if I put a recorded dvd in the portable player?

Maybe and maybe not. Just because it doesn't say it will play them doesn't mean it won't. Get a DVD-R recordrer if you want to be sure.
