I got a new HLN5065W yesterday and setup my dvd player to work on Progressive scan. I have a new cable I connected between them. I still don't see a better picture as they talk about Progressive scan dvd. Am I missing something? Any suggestions are really appreciated.

What kind of cable, is it component, composite, or S-video?

With that TV, you should get the Samsung DVD player with the DVI connection. HD931 is the model number.

It uses the direct DVI connection which is superior to the Component cables...

dvi isn't superior, just in the fact that it will upconvert 480p to 720p, if both were 480p there would be no difference, just propaganda BS so they can have there copyright protected plug

I have another post asking "what is the big deal about Progressive Scan?" because I don't see any difference either. My best guess is that your TV, as well as mine, has the up-convert capability to convert 480i to 480p or higher (my hitachi claims 520p). Therefore, when you turn off the PS at your DVD player, your TV takes over to do the PS. Hence you don't see any differences.

Eric K,

I used Y, Pb, Pr, and then audio L & R cable. I also tried regular red, white and yellow cable and no change.

Also,
Here is an interesting thing I noticed since my last post. I was using CyberHome 300 DVD player and my picture was not good as said above. Now I tried a 3 year old Toshiba DVD player I had, and picture is a lot better. So, now I decided to try with a new DVD player tonight. Will let you all know.
Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions.

I don't know if my TV converts 480i to 480p by default, I will check that today with my specs, etc.,

I can't tell you WHY I consider it superior, I just know that in a side-by-side comparison - my picture IMPROVED enough to justify using the DVI connection over the component.

Besides, if it DOES upconvert to 720p, doesn't that alone make it SUPERIOR?

I'm confused

I am the second anonymous in this discussion. I somewhat agree with the 1st anonymous. DVI is "superior" only in theory. DVI is a digital connection while component video is an analog connection. In theory, digital has a higher signal-to-noise ratio is less subject to other interferences.

Progressive Scan is to produce a 480P (from regular 480i) display. The TV that NH USER mentioned should up-convert either input from DVI or from component video to 720P automatically. So it would be difficult for him to tell if his DVD player progressive scan is working or not. The way to find out if the DVD player is producing 480P signal is by using the "Info" button on the TV (if it has one). The TV should then show what type of signal it is receiving. If it says 480P, the DVD player PS is working.

Samsung sells a DVD player (HD931) that offers a DVI output. It claims that it can produce 1080i/720p video output via the DVI. This is basically done the same way that many HDTVs up-convert the signals. If the DVD itself is not HD (people are still trying to set a HD-DVD standards), you will not get true HD picture. DVI or not isn't going to make any difference. According to many reviews, this player has many other problems and is not worth the higher price just for the DVI output.

The Samsung HD931 does suffer from some problems (slow and unfriendly menus), but the Faroudja upconversion works very well. You only get the 720p or 1080i signal out the DVI output. I was told that this doesn't make a great difference in picture quality UNLESS you have a digital array driving your TV. I have a Hitachi 50V500 that has a native 720p format. The difference between the 480p and 720p is quite astonishing on with this combination. Also, the Faroudja chip bybasses some of the chrominance bugs in the standard decompression of the video. In sum, don't buy the Samsung for use with your CRT RPTV. If you have LCD, LCoS or DLP you will probably like it. Check it out at Bestbuy to see the comparison. BIG GRIPE: the button to cycle from 480p -> 720p -> 1080i is ONLY on the front panel -- not accessible from the remote.
