i have a sony KDF60XBR950 Grand WEGA tv, and a sony Dav-fc9 dream system, i've connected the dvd to the tv via component video cable and set the output on the dvd player to progressive, and tv aspect to 16:9, however when i play anamorphic or widescreen dvds there are two black stripes across the top and bottom, letter boxes, why are they there? shouldn't the fact that the dvd player is set to 16:9 they disappear? does anyone have any insight

here's the details:
16:9 is a ratio of 1.78 (width is 1.78xthe height)
widescreen is often ratio 1.85 or larger (or 16:8.6)
anamorphic is ratio 2.35 (or 16:6.8)
since your width is constant, the height of the picture varies with the different "widescreen format"
very few movies are actually 16:9, so get used to seeing those letterboxes. 16:9 is the standard size HD is broadcast in and the TV's are made for that picture.
