How do I play widescreen ps2 games on my 42" widescreen wega?

the only way i know how is to go into game options, press widescreen (on my 4:3 it compressed the image horizontally, but now it vertically compresses it) then i have to click zoom on my controller...not "full" but "zoom"...am i doing this rite? thanks
