Hi, I will be buying a new DVD player soon, basically, I want to get a DVD/VCR combo machine, and I need it to have an optical output. Great quality and durability are also important. I wanna spend about $200 or less... any suggestions on brands or models? Thanks!

Doubtful you will find "great quality" in a combo unit.

Why is that? Also I should've added, one that will play burned DVD's.

You'll have to ask that of the manufacturers. But read the treads and I think you will find an almost universal consensus on that issue. Maybe it's hard to combine the generally excellent quality associated with DVD and the generally poor quality associated with VHS into a unit that does them both well.

Chris, if you are into burning, another alternative is to pass all your old VHS tapes to DVDs. For 200$ you then can buy a very decent DVD only.

Regarding capabilitity to read burned discs, you'll have to check player specs. Remember that not all manufacturers support both -R and +R formats. Also, some players are known to read burned discs better than others.

I have a Pioneer DV565A and it reads everything, even a ginger bread, if it is a "-R" :-)

Cheers

Don't touch combos, they are cheap junk. They are also hard to work on.

The Toshiba SD-V592 has received good reviews from Secret's. See below.

Toshiba makes one of the worst VCRs you can buy, ultra cheap junk.

Why to ge a combo, when you can get a good DVD for a decent price and a VCR for less than 80. If you really care for good sound and Video saty away from the combo stuff and do your homework, but if you are looking for space saving on your CAMPER trailer be my guess and get the combo ( I have one in our trailer with our 27 inch TV)--In my home No way...

David,

I have a Toshiba VCR and I don't think it's junk. I guess it's a matter of opinion.

I work on VCRs, it's more than opinion. Toshiba is one of the cheapest built VCRs made.

Javier,

I don't think all combo units are cheap built machines. It's not difficult to add the electronics and transport to a DVD player. You all make the assumption that an $80 VCR is better built than the combo unit and I think that is a bad assumption. Tell me what you get different in a standalone player? What do most people do with e VCR other than watch old tapes anymore? You don't need a lot of fancy features, just the ability to play a tape.

He is right, combos are poor quality. They use the cheapest mechanical and circuit assemblies made. They are also hard to work on, and if something goes wrong with the DVD/VCR it will sometimes affect the other making the unit useless.

Can anyone tell me how to connect a DVD recorder to a DVD player to record from one to another. What inputs to what outputs? Thanks

You can't copy DVDs without a stabilizer. Take that money and buy a burner instead.
