I've recently bought a Hitachi 60v500 ($3499)! However, I haven't picked it up from cc yet and was wondering if I needed to consider something else after hearing about these LCOS TV's. Also. the fan noise scares me somewhat considering the money I dropped on this unit! Anyway, are LCD TV's here to stay or is this some sort of fad!Is anything coming out in the next 6 mo that you would advise me to consider? Thanks for the help!

most companies are dropping lcos (like toshiba) and lcd (like panasonic and more) in favor of DLP. next years dlp's will be much better, higher contrast (supposadly a black black, not a dark gray black like now), full range component inputs, and a few other upgrades

samsung is releasing there 1080P DLP's at the very very end of this year, the rest are all 720p

id go DLP, next years will also be cheaper, bigger & better

Just had to weight in on this one!
Although it is true that Toshiba has backed off of the LCOS TV's in favor of the DLP system, The new guy Intel is coming out with a new LCOS chip...
Here are some points that should be considered.

LCD - The quality of LCD displays varies from company to company... but the quality is usually very good for the money... Sony has a bulb problem but not a LCD problem. The picture is GREAT!

DLP - Is more expensive than LCD, althought the price difference does not seem to show in the quality of the picture when you do a side by side comparison to a LCD screen. DLP technology is also in a flux right now as TI is coming out with the HD2+ chip and the xHD3 chip... There is also a new color wheel.... So I would not buy a DLP set TODAY... Tomorrow (November) will be much different... and for a 3-4000 investment, I'm waiting for next years model...

LCOS - Its time to sit back and see how intel does with LCOS... The best features of LCOS is that there are NO moving parts as there are with DLP (moving mirrors on chip) and spinning color wheel... I've seen the specs on some of the new LCOS TVS and the depth of the TV's comes down under 12 inces... Man that thin for a TV...

If we were talking about a 6-700 dollar tv I'd say get what ever you want as you will be able to replace it easily (dollas wise) next Nov if you are disatisfied... BUT 4000 for a TV is a hefty INVESTMENT....

Wait till November!

How does the Hitachi V500 rear projection series compare with Sony rear projection LCD?

You ALL need to calm down. );-) There is a known problem with the bulb housing--it is loose and the bulbs fail from a poor connection.

Simply contact Sony, tell them you are aware of the problem, and need the housing changed or secured. Apparently, the race to build units to meet huge demand for the system resulted in a manufacturing glitch. I heard the production period was from mid 2003 to early 2004.

I purchased my unit in early 2003, and it has been superb. Give it a chance.

LCOS won't be out for a while. Intel is slated to have some chips ready end of the year. However, who is going to use them? No one has made comments of using them. So until you hear Sony, or someone is going to use them, there will be no TVs using the chips. Intel can make the best chips but if no one uses them where does that leave you? Meanwhile TFT LCDs will get cheaper (which I think will be king) RPTV LCDs will get better, DLPs will get better and Plasma should get cheaper. LCOS will be a few years off I think.
