OK, I bought the Samsung DVD-HD841 at Costco for $109 (I can return it whenever I want) so I can hook it up to my Mitsu 65-413 Projection TV. I got it to work the 2nd try using the DVI cables and everything seems to be working fine. I watched about an hours worth of Heat with no problems and the sound was pretty good, picture didn't seem at all near HD quality. I'm comparing the Samsung to my 3-4 year JVC 7 disc DVD (I think the model number is XV-FA 80 or 90). When I switch sources on my tv it tells you what type of signal is being sent to the tv, for example in HD it says 1080i, but when I go to the Samsung DVD player it says 480p. So I'm getting progressive scan on the Samsung dvd player, which I was already getting on the JVC, but should the it say 1080 p or I when I switch to the Samsung DVD signal? If it should how do I get it to 1080? The reason I ask this is the picture I have on 65 inch is pretty much similar between the Samsung and the JVC, the sound is better on the Samsung but no sure if that is due to using optical (Monster Cable) on the Samsung and Coaxial (Monster Cable) on the JVC. I am eventually switching my cables to MIT. Thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions you give me.

JRT, sorry to advise you that you can not create HD from a non HD source. I will confess that on some material my Panasonic S97S seems to provide a better picture when it upconverts a DVD signal. But it is not nor can it be true HD. We'll have to wait until they release HD DVDs. Good that you can return the Samsung whenever you wish.

Thanks Dale, I new it was too good to be true. Now that I have a taste of what HD looks like, regular cable/tv/sat/DVD(not as much though) sucks. What about the Samsumg HD 941? It says it gives a picture of 720/1080, but I assume its too good to be true as well. I'll return my 841 and get some power tools or a garden blower or something, thanks again Dale.

My pleasure. But don't be so hard on regular tv. That's all millions of Americans can afford right now. And when done right, it can be pretty good.

Regular TV looked great on my 32 inch Panasonic Tube, but then got a great deal on the Mitsu 65 inch last year for $1999 at The Good Guys. A little to big for the current house, the smaller size down was going to cost me more, but moving in the next 6-9 months so it should work out. I'll just be patient, maybe get the Voom HD Sat system for the new house.

Do you mean how do you switch from 480 / 720 / 1080 for the 841? There's a tiny button on the remote that switches between the modes (and what your TV allows) called "DVI mode". The Samsung 841 is not bad for $100 considering it does play SACDs (albeit not very well) and most DVD-/+Rs as well -- especially when you consider they do throw in a $50 DVI cable for free. Still, I'm upgrading to Oppo OPDV971H. I'll write up a review after I get to play with it and compare notes.
