Our beloved 55" Big screen has had the color convergence go out again. We have been looking at replacing it with a new DLP large screen aprox 52", or another 52"+ CRT. We are noticing a marked difference in the on-screen proportions of people in the new 16:9 format. Everyone seems kind of squashed down and very wide! Are we just seeing some bad examples?? Or is that a common occurance in this new format?? Also, we have seen quite a difference in picture quality when we ask salespeople to switch from HD programming to regular programming. Even in Plasma, LCD, DLP sets we see a big difference. Has anyone noticed this? Thank you for sharing your information.

No, it is the TV. The TV does not have the technology to display standard 4:3 stuff, and so stretches it to fit the widescreen area. This is common with older widescreen TV's.

Yes, that is why it is called High Definition, because it is better than Standard Defintion. Everything is crisper, clearer and easier to see.
I should have made myself clearer. When the salesperson switched to regular tv viewing the picture was not clear, blurry, fuzzy really an unappealing picture. We have asked other stores to switch to regular viewing and they can't! They only show in HD. While I am totally wowed by HD I am concerned that regular viewing will not be quality. I do expect to see a visible difference in HD and regular tv programming!! I just don't want regular programming to be a blurry fuzzy mess!!

That is what you get from High Definition content. It is why it is called HIGH definition, as oppposed to standard definition. I have a HD plasma tv, and with regular, standard def shows, it is grainy and sort of like what happens when you get no signal - static. With the HD STB, it is so much clearer, sharper, better.

That is what it is, after you have seen HD. My friends are quite happy to still have their CRT tv's with standard def stuff. But once you experience HD, everything else is like "whoa, that blurry"...
