Connection Help: Sony DVD/VCR to work with cable box

Have 25" Panisonic TV model CT27D31 with cable with "quick record" feature. Works fine with just VCR. Purchased Sony RDRVX-500 DVD/VCR. Can't get Sony DVD/VCR to recognize cable box. Nor do advance programming/quick record. Only able to record w everything on during program. How do I connect it up so I can program the "machines" to record in advance/recognize the cable box?
have tou program the dvd on the menu to find all chanel i just did a sustem where i hook you every thing right and i could get the sateleite system on and dvd on but not as the same time on til i use the meuu, and program the dvd to find all the channel then i could record a program from sateleite witht he dvd vcr cobo
