If you're running a DVD recorder through an A/V receiver and the cable box also is connected through the A/V receiver why do you even need any (RF) connections directly to the tv (from the recorder)? The TV is connected as monitor out from the receiver and an already connected VCR allows tv watching. In my case, the recorder will stay on channel 3 and I'll manually change the cable box to the channel I want to record from. Every recorder manual shows connecting the recorder to the tv and/or cable box, but none make it clear whether an A/V receiver can do all the switching. Am I missing something obvious here?

To playback a recording from your DVD recorder? Unless you have a receiver with video switching capability. Not all people do.
Keep in mind the RF connection transfers the video signal.
