Are plasma and lcd inherently progressive devices?

I assume that plasma displays and LCD displays are inherently progressive devices, correct?

If this is so then deinterlacing must be performed before they can display both SD and HD interlaced signals. And since the video signal and display native resolutions will generally be different, not only deinterlacing (line doubling or quadrupling) but scaling will be in order. Is this correct?

I've been searching all over for some definitive answers about this but can seem to find a resource that actually explains how, for example, a SD TV signal is "prepared" for a LCD TV.

Can someone help me out. I really want to understand this.

Thanks,

Mark

Plasmas and LCD have a internal scaler to convert interlaced to progressive.
