Bronze Member Username: Chopper414New York, New York Post Number: 22 Registered: Sep-04 | I just got back from Circuit City this afternoon , and they had both the 5085 & the 5685 displayed together. Right next to these units were the (2)brand new Sony hdtv 55WF655 & 60xs955. At first I thought I bought the wrong tv after viewing them, until I was able to compare the units all together watching alive feed from a HD broadcast. I couldn't be happier! I couldn't believe my eyes. The 5685 had the best overall picture. The colors were so vibrant and accurate. The natural skin tones were on the money. The LCD pixels on the Sony were slightly separated on the screen (close up), where as the DLP pexels were closer together, giving you the smoother, detailed picture. I came so close to buying the Sony, but I'm glad I didn't. I always liked Sony tvs, and they make great products. It seems that Sony doesn't rule the tv spectrum anymore, thanks to new technology. BTW I can still return my 5685 for a Sony, but why would I? Even the new LG hdtv looked better than the Sony. All my doubts are gone. |
Tranq Unregistered guest | Wow I'm late to this post...but I just thought I'd come down and say what I have to say. I was initially convinced that the JVC HD52Z575 would be the right TV for me and nothing that any of my colleagues (I work at Futureshop btw-->the Best Buy of Canada) could change my mind. I mean, I had seen it's horrific ability to display analogue signals, but I expected that HD would be much better. I had always considered the Samsung HL-P5085W, but it was out of my price range. Trust me on one thing though, next to the actual people who own BOTH of these units and have them side by side, I would have the most exprience with their quality. The Samsung BLOWS the JVC away with any signal. The price difference was only about $700 Canadian, but then I realized that I didn't have to buy a stand for the Samsung. So now here I am, a happy Samsung owner. The major thing about the JVC that made me change my mind was that after looking at the two units side by side for one month (with different signals-->HD/Digital/Analogue) with different settings on each TV, I just couldn't get the JVC to perform at the same level (or even one level below it). The JVC had a lot of problems with refresh rate with an analogue signal and ONLY looks good with a matching JVC HD-VCR recorder, other than that, it's picture was pixilated even compared to the cheaper Sony beside it. I like it's brightness and contrast, but it didn't make up for the awful picture it displayed. To those of you who purchased the JVC unit in question, one thing we've started doing to sell the unit is to actually use less attractive settings and lower quality lines on the TVs beside the JVC...but it still doesn't help that much. Trust me when I say the Samsung is a better buy. And what's wrong with listening to people from Best Buy? We spend the MOST time with TVs. |
JPLW Unregistered guest | My local Tweeter sez that the xx74 arrives 1 November--they showed in their computer. They also claim that the xx63 series is being discontinued...probably becasue the version with the HDTV tuner built in will replace them soon. |
DaveM Unregistered guest | I've read on other threads that sammy lowered the specs for the 5674, including going from the originally intended 7 segment color wheel back to a 6. (A cost saving measure to keep their list price in check with comparible competitor sets). If anyone can verify this, I'd certainly appreciate it! |
Jeff_Texas Unregistered guest | It is 6 segment. The 5674w and 4674w are listed on Samsung web. |
The Almighty Unregistered guest | Yo Tranq, I guess us happy JVC owners are easy to please. South of border, BB and Sears employees seem to agree that the PQ of the JVC is outstanding, and is displayed next to the Kirk in several stores. But then again on the internet anybody can be anyone they want to and say whatever! |
Anonymous | The Sammy looks great as long as you keep the sound off (a/v sync problems), and don't move your head (rainbows). that's until the 3 blinking lights issue pops up and then you get to stare at a wonderful cabinet. |
Anon Amous Unregistered guest | Can you be anymore dramatic! Get a life! |
Bronze Member Username: RforeillyPost Number: 17 Registered: Sep-04 | Why would Samsung go back to an older technology for its color wheel in the '74 series especially since Samsung states the following in its pdf brochure: "New color wheel Samsung's new color wheel is larger, faster and more vivid than previous models. This 2.6" color wheel spins at 10,800 rpm, and has seven color segments for smoother pictures and more accurate colors. The new color wheel is also 30% quieter than previous models." |
Strati Unregistered guest | Robert, I'm sure DaveM means well by posting what he's read on other threads, but he has not linked it to any official Samsung documentation. Going from a 7 segment color wheel to a 6 segment for cost reduction purposes sounds ridiculous! |
Silver Member Username: Mr_lynchSeattle, WA Post Number: 119 Registered: Sep-04 | Hey guys, DaveM is right. Check out the link. If you look under the specs it says 6 segment wheel at 9,000rpm. http://www.samsungusa.com/cgi-bin/nabc/product/b2c_product_detail.jsp?eUser=&pro d_id=HLP5674WX%2fXAA&selTab=Specifications |
Jimbo in Dallas Unregistered guest | DaveM reported what he had heard and asked for confirmation. Jeff answered with a confirmation that the 5674 does indeed have the 6-segment color wheel as shown on the Samsung website. Whether or not this was a cost savings move may be conjecture, but the 5674 and 4674 have 6-segment wheels. |
Silver Member Username: Mr_lynchSeattle, WA Post Number: 120 Registered: Sep-04 | I just did a "live chat" with Samsung. Here is what I found out: Juan Says: Hello, how can I help you today? Mr. Lynch Says: I just noticed the new HLPxx74 series TVs and I have a question. Juan Says: ok Mr. Lynch Says: why do they use s 6 segment color wheel? Doesn't the HLPxx85 series use a 7? Juan Says: The HLPxx74W will be featured with a seven segment color wheel Juan Says: and the HD2+ chip Mr. Lynch Says: Your website says : 6 segment at 9,000rpm. Juan Says: One moment please Juan Says: I checked with the product specialist and the information on the website is correct, the 74 series has a six segment color wheel and a contrast ratio of 2000:1 Mr. Lynch Says: is there a reason for the change? Mr. Lynch Says: Also, do you know the release date on the 74 series? Juan Says: It was a decision from the headquarter to go with the six segment colow wheel, not sure why. The expected release date on this model is between November or the beginning of December. Mr. Lynch Says: Thank very much for your help. Juan Says: your welcome |
Strati Unregistered guest | Wow, that seems odd considering the pricing of this model, from what I've read, is higher than their flagship 85 series! |
Silver Member Username: Mr_lynchSeattle, WA Post Number: 122 Registered: Sep-04 | The upcoming 97 series with the xhd3 (1080p chip)is also going to be "Kirk" style with that big stand. It seems like Samsung doesn't listen to it's customers. |
DaveM Unregistered guest | Ah HAh! So Samsung did CHANGE their planned 7-segment wheel to the 6. Sure, I can conjecture and speculate all I want, but a "not sure why" from Samsung leads me to believe what I had read previously.... That is was to meet a certain list-price objective. |
Bronze Member Username: RforeillyPost Number: 18 Registered: Sep-04 | What advantage would Samsung gain by using an inferior technology for the '74 series color series? It would signal a step backwards for their DLP line and makes little sense from a marketing point of view. Why would anyone be interested in buying last year's technology? |
RobinB Unregistered guest | Someone better tell Ultimate E that the 5674 doesn't have 3000:1 |
mmmoeller Unregistered guest | Did you check the Samsung website lately? They have all the spec posted now. Just as they released the Kirk model they posted the specs on the website and not before. I have faith that Nov. 8th date given by Tweeter is solid. |

DaveM Unregistered guest | I am not too much of a tech guy, but from what I understand, the 7 color higher RPM color wheel produces a better picture. (Less motion artifacts perhaps??) Anyway, I am dissapointed that sammy would go BACKWARDS in technology to meet a price point objective. Folks like me were willing to pay $$$ for this DLP, and I have been waiting since May. But this set, although still probably with great PQ, is no longer the animal that I thought it was going to be. I'm going to hold off for a few months to see what else is coming up from Mitsubishi and others. |
Tranq Unregistered guest | Hello there "Almighty" (I won't even comment on the kind of person who would call themselves that). Believe what you want about the JVC and hey, when I'm trying to sell it I say it looks good too. I'll mention first of all I'm not actually from the Home Theater department but am from Communications/IPG. I was intrigued by the D-ILA technology used in the JVC and it was about time to buy a new one anyway. I'm not saying that the JVC is a bad TV, just that it doesn't really compare with what I ended up with. Honestly, I may have been happy with the JVC simply because there is nothing to compare it to when it's home, BUT when it's side by side with other TVs it really doesn't look that great. I mean hey, I'm currently "happy" with my 10yr old 51 inch Pioneer, but that doesn't mean it'll be worth a cent next to my new Samsung. I'm not insulting JVC buyers by saying they bought a rip-off, but if you are going to quote BB and Sears staff on the quality of the JVC, once again, I'll say anything is good to sell it. I'm not trying to change anyone's mind either, it's just my two cents, because I know how hard it is to accept that you've bought an inferior unit. I like my Samsung and hey I hope you guys like your JVC. If you guys ever get a chance though, go out to your nearest BB and compare the two sets. I mean ACTUALLY compare-->look at what cables each are using, their source, and the settings on the units. If by some chance they are the same, and the JVC STILL looks better to you, then hey...whatever floats your boat, right? |
armchairmanoftheboard Unregistered guest | I have heard there are several problems of DLP that the D-ILA does not have. Like the rainbow effect and the blurr on fast moving objects like basketballs. The Samsung also has a lot of heat (don't need a heater in Las Vegas) and fan noise not to mention the bulbs burning out. I think I will just keep reading the threads and not be pushed into a TV that someone has bought and wants to feel better about their purchase by trying to persuade others of the good deal they got. Half price for a JVC? Sounds good to me. Isn't it better than a piece of CRAP Samsung? Ya! I have 3 Samsung products and (User Friendly) is not known to the South Koreans. The most rediculous layout of controls and the universal remote won't even work other Samsung products. Yep them are great! Please continue to try and sell that to us. No more Samsuck for me! Ralph |
Tranq Unregistered guest | I hope that your post is not directed to me, armchairmanoftheboard, because if it is then you're dumber than your short post would allow to be reviled. First of all, I was a bit confused as to why "User Friendly" was in brackets, later to realize you meant quotation marks (btw congrats on using the brackets the correct way in your third sentence), and second of all, anyone who is short of actually owning either of these sets, or has spent over 15mins looking at them should not comment on their quality. You've "heard" of some problems? Well well, thank you for showing us that you can repeat what you've absorbed. And like I said before, I'm not trying to make people buy the Samsung. I mean honestly, what does your enjoyment have anything to do with me? That being said, I do wish to inform those who are interested in these two units about my exprience with them (which is not insignificant). I'm not going to generalize either, and say that all Samsung products are good, in fact I really dislike their LCDs (NEC user myself). The two units in question (JVC HD-52Z575 and Samsung HLP5085W) are meant for different markets, and to compare the two units on a non-relative scale would be like comparing a G35 to an S4 (which, saddly, is done often on various G35 forums). As much as I would like to believe that my Infiniti can beat a sport bred Audi, it just isn't so. ANYWAY, back to the topic at hand; please, before you start talking about what you've "heard" of, actually compare the two units in question. And hey, I'm sure you've "heard" of problems that D-ILA has which DLA doesn't, for example inconsistent colouration throughout the screen (which I've actually not seen in the JVC in my store). Well, hope I don't see other posts from people who probably haven't actually SEEN these two TVs side by side telling me that I'm just trying to make myself feel better. Good luck to you, armchairmanoftheboard, and may your obvious discrimination against Samsung products guide you for the rest of your electronics buying life. |
Jimbo in Dallas Unregistered guest | This is a Sammy DLP thread. I don't mind people coming in and reporting first hand problems, but it is frustrating to see those who apparently come in just to bash. I have a Sammy 4663 DLP and I like it. I have no noisy color wheel, no rainbow effects and no blurry motion artifacts with NFL football. But it's still new. I know there have been some problems with other models and other sets. This is still a developing technology. But I would like to come here and read constructive criticism and find potential help for problems rather than just bullshit. Just my $0.02. |
Kylez Unregistered guest | Jimbo, it is great that you have the only TV without the fuzzy blurry on fast moving objects. I only looked at 20 HDTV's at Frys and they said it is their signal that causes the problem and also because analog TV is so bad you just could not see it before. I think thechairmanoftheboard has a point. You bought it and you don't wan't to see it. Kyle Z |
Anonymous | Jimbo, why are you at this thread bashing bashers if you have a perfect TV. Oh ya, you just wanted to see if you could get a better TV than you have already. Your so happy with the Sammy you want to upgrade it already. Maybe you should have read all the stuff bad with them before you bought it. |
Ray from California Unregistered guest | Must be that Jimbo and I have the only TWO TV's without the fuzzy blurry on fast moving objects. I have a Samsung 4663 DLP and I love the TV. I had planned to wait for the 4674 but figured it would cost more and probably wouldn't be much, if any, better. I don't regret it one bit. If current Samsung owners stopped visiting this forum, the only posters would be uniformed bashers who have no constructive input. It's good to hear from those that have had positive results with these sets. Thanks Jimbo. |
cooldude Unregistered guest | Looking at the specs, it looks like 5085 is the best new DLP out there. There is a very informative comparison by extremetech which discusses 5063W in depth comparing it with plasma and LCD technologies. These guys have done a lot of good work and this particular comparison is really interesting and technical. Take a look at this thread. It is a bummer that the 63 series has these problems per the website: Poor uniformity compared with other panel technologies; lacks an ATSC tuner or CableCARD support; vertical viewing angle sensitivity; 40-second to full-bright "boot time." I am hoping that the 85 series does a bit better on the above failings of 63. Would anyone here with good experience with 85 (i don't mean a few minutes but a few weeks hopefully) mind commenting? http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,1681158,00.asp |
Silver Member Username: Mr_lynchSeattle, WA Post Number: 134 Registered: Sep-04 | I agree with you Ray. People need to be more constructive with their posts. I think Samsung has an excellent product with the DLP sets. They do have questionable quality issues, but it seems to be getting a lot better. I have not seen as many complaints as before. I'm pretty sure they are addressing the issues and that is why some of the products have been delayed (74 series for example). Every type of TV is going to have its pluses and minuses, but for the most part just about every HDTV is going to look damn good compared to what was available before. I personally bought a JVC, but I'm sure I'd be happy with a Toshiba or Hitachi or Sony or even a Samsung. I found this forum very helpful (for the most part) and we need to keep it that way. |
VidHed Unregistered guest | I already sent back my HLP5674... what a piece of garbage! Got the Mits and it was worse. I've had my Tobi 62HM84 for almost a month and couldn't be happier. Samsung left it's customers hanging. Why would anyone even CONSIDER giving them hard-earned $? Forget them. |

Bronze Member Username: Chopper414New York, New York Post Number: 24 Registered: Sep-04 | I could have purchased any HDTV on the market, and yet I've chosen the 5685. Believe me when I tell you, how great the hd picture looks. I've compared this unit (5685) to the 62" Mits, JVCs, and the 60" Sonys (Wega/XBR) for over a month, and the Sammy still had the best overall pq. The older Samsung units did not look nearly as bright or detailed. The Mits and the LG were the only sets that came close to the 5685. All the sets were hooked up to the same hd feed. I've even brought four of friends so they judge for themselves, and believed that the Sammy had the best overall pq. I did'nt coach them at all. They did believe it was a little expensive, but liked the innovative design, while two of my friends question where would they place the components. I'm not telling anyone to buy one, but to have someone bash the 5685 for no reason, is just plain crazy. Everyone has a preference, and I know there's a hdtv out there that will suit that person's needs. |
Mike5119 Unregistered guest | Hello, Samsung's website already have the HLP4674 on the list and only list the contrast as 2000:1, 6 segments wheel at 9,000 RPM, net dimension of 40.6"(W) x 30"(H) x 16.1"(D), & weight 73.9 lbs. I'm happy that I decided to buy the HLP4663W back in August because there is not much difference, except the thin bezel. Hope you guy know someone work at Samsung because the employee's price is $2314 for HLP4674W. Mike |
Rex G Unregistered guest | I read somewhere that the reason Samsung went to a 6 segment wheel (at least for a couple of latest models) was that there was too much green on the DLPs, and this was away to cut down on the green saturation. Could someone comment on this? . |
Big Mike Unregistered guest | Rex G Where did you read this info and can you post it? |
BillyBob Unregistered guest | Lower contrast ratio.... older color wheel.... What is Samsung doing?? How will the 5674 now compare to other sets side-by-side? We'll just have to wait and see. I'm pissed!! |
Seth R Unregistered guest | Whether or not it is true, the gentleman from whom I am buying a 5674W did state that his Samsung representative provided the green saturation issue as an explanation for the six segment, lower RPM color wheel issue. I am awaiting a 5674W from Tweeter in New Hampshire, which is scheduled to arrive on November 8th. Only time will tell if it actually ever does come in. I currently have a Mits 52725, but have found the fan noise (in light of its front mounted light engine), to be intolerable compared to the Samsung DLP sets that I have owned. |
Unregistered guest | I was looking at the original (preliminary) spec sheets for the 2004 Samsung DLP's that came out earlier in the year, and comparing it against the current specs on the Samsung website and noticed some changes: The HLP 5674W preliminary spec sheet use to say: 3000:1 contrast ratio Currently says: 2000:1 contrast ratio But if the 5685 Pedestal model is the same HD2+ chip, why did the preliminary spec sheet use to say: 3000:1 contrast ratio But now says: 2500:1 contrast ratio Additionally both use to say: Faroudja film Mode 3:2 Pull down enchancement Now they say: Samsung Cinema Smooth Film Mode 3:2 Film Mode by Genesis Anybody have an explanation to the difference in contrast ratio and whether the Genesis 3:2 pull down is better or worse than the Faroudja????? |
dlky1 Unregistered guest | It appears the HLP5674 DOESN'T have the cable card slot, as previously planned ( this allows you to receive HD without a cable box, you only need a card from your cable company)...I think this may be another reason the list price dropped. I'm going to wait for the 2005 models, which should have this, AND they will have the built in tuner, which allows you to pick up local channel HD programming without paying additional cost to cable company. This is going to be required on 50% of TVs beginning 1/2005 I think...so, I'll just wait a while...if someone knows differently, please enlighten me! |
REx G Unregistered guest | Big Mike. I cannot find the thread about Sansung's HLP4674W new hlp+ with the six segment wheel. As I read the various post I ran into one that said it may be a correction to the green saturation. I am sorry I cannot find it right now, however, I went into a Magnolia store yesterday, and talked with a knowledgeable individual who said the six segment wheel was a cost cutting measure. So the reason my be cost after all. Too bad |
Big Mike Unregistered guest | Thanks for the info Rex. Sounds like samsung is moving in the wrong direction on this set. |
Mauri Unregistered guest | For All of us: 7-segment color wheel: The extra segment is a green segment meant to improve rendering in dark areas (in other words: "better blacks") - The 7-segment color wheel requires a 10 bit processing of the video signal (and that's probably the real reason why the cost of the 7-segment wheel is higher). Interesting in DLP infos? Visit their dedicate website: www.dlp.com for news - Some easy explanations about the DLP chips, ect? Visit: http://www.digiupdate.com/105_DLP_RPTV.html Hope this help. soonerdu Unregistered guest | Anyone out there using DISH satellite with their sammy dlp? I have the hlp5685W and made a discovery that totally confused me! Last night I was toying with the 811 dish receiver and change the HDTV setup (under installation menu) option from 720p to 1080i and the picture is way superior on hdtv stations (OTA and satellite) and other sd channels. I tested it multiple times and it is definitely better at 1080i. There is less artifacts around the edges. I am totally confused!?? I am using DVI cables for the connection. Can somebody out there try it out and respond. Is my 811 dish receiver faulty? |
DaveM Unregistered guest | FL, I also compared the original preliminary sheet to the latest, and it would appear that several specs have been lowered, rather than improved. I guess that's why they call it Preliminary. As far as the pull-down is concerned, Faroudja is a division of Genesis. Not sure which is better though, their Farjouda brand or the "Cinema Smooth" brand. Given the moves that Samsung is making, however, I have to believe Faroudja is best. Read more at: http://www.gnss.com/faroudja.phtml |
Roy Unregistered guest | Green saturation in the six segment wheel is handled by making the green segments look like a "sponge". Why it works? It does work. 7 segment wheels cost more to make as it requires an additional segment to be bonded. Monolithic wheels are deposited directly on the substrait instad of glueing on pie segments, but they cost much more. The future is in the scrolling color wheel. Look around here for some info on this. http://www.oceanoptics.com/products/thinfilms.asp |
Karl Artz Unregistered guest | Just wanted to post my 4 week experience with an HLP4663. I purchased an HLP4663 on Sept 23 after watching Samsung's progress in DLP for about 2 years. DLP, and this model in particular, meet my needs for size, immunity to burn-in, and picture quality, especially on SD cable. I was very happy with this set for the first few days. DVD's were great, SD cable was much better than I had anticipated. No fan noise, no colorwheel noise, minimal rainbow effect. Then... the lamp turn on problems started. Over 4 weeks I had three conversations with Samsung and at least as many with the local repair contractor. Both denied there was any significant problem with the lamps in these TVs. The service contractor said they couldn't fix the problem if the TV wasn't dead when they came. Sadly, I gave up and returned the TV after 4 weeks, since there is a well documented problem with the lamp system, and I was obviously not going to get any support. The last few days I had the TV, something went crazy in the video processing. Darker areas of the picture started lagging the lighter areas. When someone moved their head in the picture, their eyeballs would shift around in their heads as if connected by rubber bands. And no, I was not ingesting any controlled substances! I have not found a good alternative yet. The xx85's have a great picture, but are too large, and I can't use the pedestal package. I was hoping the xx74 series would be a good alternative, but now they don't look as good on paper as the xx63 series. |
Howdoin Unregistered guest | What is that "green saturation problem" that some of you are mentioning? I own the HLP5085W and although SD and HD picture seem to be fine (colorwise) I did notice with DVDs (Connected through the HDMI) that most movie have a "greenish" look. All darks have green "blocks" and the general tint of the screen is too green for my tastes. I managed to offset this by using the "color weakness" feature in risingthe red weakness to 2 but am still not perfectly happy. Anyone? |

New member Username: GregincaPost Number: 9 Registered: Sep-04 | Regardin the post from Anonymous above, you make it sound like the HD3 chip is the best chip out and has improved contrast. The HD2+ chip is the "best", out right now. It offers the best contrast as well as the sharpest picture. The SmoothPicture technology is a very nice way of saying softer. These chips use half as many mirrors as a normal chip. |
Howdoin Unregistered guest | The HT-DS1000 sound good but I feel its a little weak for 650w. You can go and hear it at the Samsung Experience - its at the time Warner Center at Colombus Circle, they have it hooked up to the HLP5085. The sound itself is rich and deep, I am just disapointed in the volume level - it needs to be at least at 30 to be "loud" - out of only 50 (but after 40 there is too much hissing for me). I would still recommend it, also cos it is easy to unlock for all zone and even plays PAL dvds, but make sure you hear it before you buy. |

dlky1 Unregistered guest | I'm waiting for the Samsung 5674 to arrive...without the cable card slot and ut the 7 segment color wheel...in the meantime, I saw a new Sony LCD Rear Projection that arrived thisweekwhich is $500-800 less than the Samsung. The picture is great. I don't like the wide body/speakers on sides...but if the Samsung doesn't arrive this week AND have a better picture, I'm going with the Sony LCD.. |

Circuit City had a 2 day sale on all digital TV's. The price was 3599 with an instant rebate of 100$. BB had it for 3799 and i told them what CC was up to. BB said they could give me 10% off the difference.(3799-3499 * 10% = 30 bucks off whoo) I told CC that BB was gonna give it cheaper. The rep went and talked to somebody, came back and said he'd sell the TV for 3499 but he gave me a 300$ gift card. Boy was I happy. It took me 3 credit cards and some cash. But I had to take advantage! That's $1000 lower than the original retail ($4199) Thanx 74 series. Should I get the warrany? Samsung told me the bulb was only $300 and I could install it myself. CC want's $599. This Just in, now I just find out I get an additional $200 gift card for signing up for comcast HDTV with proof of purchase of my Samsung hlp5085w! Couldn't be happier. Windows HDTV DVD's look unbelievable on the dlp with my PC hooked up through the DVI! This is the perfect computer moniter(Chillin on my sofa with a wireless keyboard and mouse) Holla! |

Roy Unregistered guest | For those of you that worry about lip sync, That is synchronization of audio with the picture, Denon has the answer for you. It looks like their lower priced unit the AVR-2805 has the ability to delay each audio channel, off air, DVD, etc. by up to 200 ms. It also stores these for each audio channel so the delay will be there when you use that source. Lower price for this Denon is about $650. |
IRJ Unregistered guest | Anyone know when the hew 1080P Samsung 6197 hits the shops? I thought it was due right now. Meantime seeing great offers on the 6163. I guess that's clearing the decks for the 6197. Now shud I wait for the 6197 or buy the 6163????? |
Silver Member Username: Mr_lynchSeattle, WA Post Number: 165 Registered: Sep-04 | They are clearing the 63 series out for the 74 series that has the HD2+ chip. The 97 series is atleast 6 months off. Spring 05 is what Samsung last spoke of. Last year they said Spring 04 for the 74 series and those are still not out, so who really knows. |
IRJ Unregistered guest | ML, Thanks for the very quick update, it is appreciated. Seems my timeline was way out. I could have "sworn" Nov 2004 was the date for the release of the 6197... Now I am confused. As I understand it the 6193 has the slightly maligned HD3 processor. However, I find the picture very good to excellent back to back with all the other DLPs and LCoS Televisions I have seen. I understand the 6197 will have the improved XHD3 processor. Meantime the best competitor for the 6163 appears to be the Sony KDF 60WF655. Quite frankly this and the 6163 appear of the same high standard to my eyes. Have you any perspective you can offer me? Meantime re the 74 series and using the HD2+. All the reviews I see of this processor are very good but the 74 series seems to top out with the 5674 and I am looking for a 60 inch or above set for my family room. (side issue would you believe it is to replace my fine "old" Mitsubichi front projection 53 inch. My that has done great service since 1983!!!!!!!!) Also I can't find the 74 series listed in many sites or shops. Thanks Ian |
Silver Member Username: Mr_lynchSeattle, WA Post Number: 167 Registered: Sep-04 | Samsung keeps pushing back the release dates and still do not have a firm answer as to when the new sets will release. When asked they always respond "keep an eye of the website for future updates". A lot of people are tired of waiting and have looked elsewhere. I know I did. Checkout the JVC 61" DiLA. You might like it. |
Seth R Unregistered guest | Well, the HLP4674W is now IN STOCK and on display at the Nashua, New Hampshire, Tweeter location. However, the HLP5674W that was supposed to arrive for my order on November 15th has now been pushed out to December 3rd. Some are speculating that Samsung wants to test the waters with the 46" model before releasing the 56", though such a plan doesn't seem commonsensical. |
dlky1 Unregistered guest | Chopper, The Sony I referred to is a XS955 (available in a 55" and 60") and it just hit the stores last week,so you may not have seen it yet. It appears to be equal to the 5685....however, who knows if the 5674 will even be as good as the 5685, since no one has seen it? |
bobbyO Unregistered guest | Everyone, Thanks for all of your insight and opinions. I am now TOTALLY confused. I stopped by my local BB on Sunday and was introduced to the new Sony XS955. It blew my socks off! It looked great compared to the Samsungs and JVCs. What might be the downsides to this tv? Isn't LCD an inferior technology? My eyes are in conflict with the knowledge in my brain from this website and other sources. Help... |
IRJ Unregistered guest | I checked out the JVC 61" DiLA at the local BB. It was turned off so I had to turn the power on. I was quite surprised that it took 45 seconds to get a picture! Unfortunately the source was different from all the other TVs so a direct comparison of picture was not possible. It was showing a somewhat hazzy picture, certainly not as nicely defined as a Sony or Samsung. To me it looks like a technology which is improving, but hasn't got there yet. |
New member Username: AvlUrbandale, IA USA Post Number: 1 Registered: Nov-04 | Without reading through all the prior posts to see if this has been brought up before. We sell Samsung TV's and noticed some dark streaks or blotches on 3 of our 4 sammy tv's, mainly visible with lighter scenes on axis, when you get off axis they go away. They are mostly around the perimeter of the TV. They also seem to disapper somewhat when you push on the screen. Anyone know what these might be? They are all brand new 63 series and the Captain Kirk has it too - 5085 |
PhilJ Unregistered guest | IRJ, I bought a 61 JVC DiLA just before football season because the Samsung 5674 got pushed out (and pushed out, and pushed out, infinity). It's a great TV in HD, so-so in Standard def. You may have been watching SD. Make sure you compare "Apples to Apples" when comparing against other sets. My tv take about 20 seconds to come on. The JVC manual states that it takes about 5 minutes for the Mercury bulb to be warmed up and give the best picture. Truthfully though, I cannot tell the difference from when I first see the picture. It also takes about 90 seconds to shut off. The picture goes off right away, but the fan goes through a cool down period. You get used to this, and I do not even think about it now when operating the TV. You Just can't turn it off and right back on. Also, The Samsung HLP5674w I had pre-ordered in April costs about $4400. I got this TV for $3250 from www.hypaudio. BB sells the 52 inch version for $3499. So I got a great deal on the 61. I would give it a second look before by passing this set. I compared it to the Samsung 5685W and the mitsubishi 52525 (or something like that). And the picture quality was just as good when using the same source. All had so-so SD quality, but I think it is the SD broadcast that needs to be improved, not the TV's. |
td4 Unregistered guest | I also got tired of waiting for the new Sammys and purchased a Panasonic PT-50DL54. 50" DLP Monitor. SD is OK, DVDs look great, haven't seen a true HD signal yet but it should be awesome. Got it at Ultimate Electronics for $3150 + tax. |
IRJ Unregistered guest | PhilJ, Yes thanks for the comments. I believe the picture source was a DVD. it was really strange that BB had it around a corner and not linked up to the HD feed the other machines had. I will look around for another shop selling it. |
Jd127127 Unregistered guest | saw the Sony XS955 60" next to the Samsung 5685. Was impressed by both...but...went to differnet store at 8pm...the Sony I saw late at night had a gray look to its black screen vs total black for the Samsung. In the daylight, however, the Sony produced much better whites than the Sammy. Moral: Match your set to your room. Mine is dark, I ordered the 5674w from TV Authority for $3825...am on wait list (#14 for takeoff) ...free shipping...free in-house unboxing and set up...$289 for 4 extra years on the warranty (total 5 years)...does not include lamp bulbs...estimated to be in stock within one week. |
Bronze Member Username: Chopper414New York, New York Post Number: 29 Registered: Sep-04 | The Samsung 5685 has the better & deeper dark/black scenes, and betters whites(contrast @ 25:00)compare to the new Sony sets. Bestbuy has both the Samsung 5085 & the Sony XS955 displayed together and is easy to determine which is the better set.The Sammy looked a little better interms of pq,not design, but the Sony came in very close. I was very surprised, and impressed on how well the Sammy looked compared to the Sony tv. DLP technology may have the upper hand on the future hd format. |
Tax Man Unregistered guest | Does anyone know if the Samsung's new 1080P tv will be in the thin bezel(Tantus) frame? Per Samsung's DLP TV brochure, all DLP TVs will be equipped with HD tuner by 2005. If you have HD receiver from Dish Network, would Samsung's HD tuner make any difference? Anyone? |
JacobB Unregistered guest | Anyone have any info on the new HLP5697w and HLP6197w? I couldn't find any mention of them on Samsung's website... I found these online at various vendors. They are supposed to have 1080p rez, new xHD3 chip, and have the same pedestal (capt. kirk) look as the HLP5685W. This vendor has some specs: Thanks. |

bigjagr Unregistered guest | Hello! Have just received the new Samsung 5085 on the pedestal and the first day was fine. Later that night the green saturation and incredible hulk looking faces started when watching a concert DVD with a lot of dark and bright lights mixed. Would there be some setting to reduce the green from the menu, a previous post mentioned the color weakness feature by rising the red but have not found that. Probably need to look around on the menu a little more. Would anybody have any other recommendations or is this the only solution short of buying another brand or model. The picture is the clearest and HD channels are great but looking at hulks all the time is not a good thing. Thanks! |
Bronze Member Username: Chopper414New York, New York Post Number: 30 Registered: Sep-04 | Try setting your tv to the following settings: Standard/Cool2 Contrast: 100 Brightness: 50 Color: 45 or less Tint: N/A I have the 5685 and I use these settings for all my viewing sources. I hope this helps. |
bigjagr Unregistered guest | Hello Chopper! Found the color weakness and played with that a little. Went to mode and changed the color too and it looks pretty good now on most channels. Will try your recommendations too and check how that looks. Probably have to keep trying different permutations but know where to look now and it is all personal preference. Have another quick question, looking for the TR85X component shelves and the cheapest on the web was about 370 but another 150 for shipping cost. Would like something a little cheaper. Have checked some stores locally in the north Florida area but they have to be ordered as nobody carries this yet. Very much appreciate the help. Thanks! |
Big Mike Unregistered guest | I just purchased the HLP5063W and during hi contrast movie scenes Im experiencing some "rainbow effects". Does anyone know if upgrading to the new HLP5674W with HD2+ chip will help? I still have a few weeks before my 30 day trial period is up, but I would like to be make plans. Thanks |
Klaus Unregistered guest | Just Purchased the HLP4674w last evening at Clearwater, FL Sound Advice(Tweeter). After much viewing of the Floor model I noticed that it is hard to see Rainbows, Contrast and color are exceptional, Viewing angle is excellent. I was able to side by side with 7000.00 Panasonic plasma, and actually the backgrounds had more detail. I had a HLN437w1 for less than a month. Bad rainbows, clay face, 3 LEDs of doom, etc. The new model has way better contrast, and seemed to be reasonable on analog channels as well. |
New member Username: Bigbob345Post Number: 1 Registered: Nov-04 | Big Mike, First it seems that with most people you either see the rainbow effect or you don't so switching models probably won't help and in your case with the models your choosing between even worse here is why.... The hlp5063w uses a 7 segment color wheel wich spins at 10800 rpms the new hlp5674 uses a 6 segment wheel wich spins at only 9000 rpms don't ask me why they did this as I know they raised the rpms on previous models to help avoid the rainbow effect that some people see????? but as people have stated no one has even seen this new model yet but unless they have integrated something new im sure the rainbow effect will still be there for the people that see it.... |
tntninja Unregistered guest | magnolia hifi says they have the hlp5674 now for $4200 |
123456qrt Unregistered guest | Klaus, how much did you pay for the 4674? thx |
klaus Unregistered guest | 123456qrt: Tag price was 3999.00 but salesman went 3499.00, plus free delivery and setup. 359 for 5 year warranty. |
klaus Unregistered guest | Tv was delivered and set up. After initial viewings the following observations: In a very bright sunlit room the picture is great even on Analog cable, which was attrocious on the 42 " plasma (1 week old) that I was replacing. HD discovery is unimaginable! No worse sound sync than on the plasma, New menus give more control over picture than the previous HLN 437w1 that I replaced with the plasma. Rainbows are very fleeting if at all, with the hln 437w1 they were the video equivalent of nails on a chalk board, or biting down on tin foil. I don't use the internal speakers so they are shut off in the menu. Colors are saturated well but realistic. My initial reaction is that during the delay in release, Samsung really addressed the major issues (rainbows, contrast, color adjustments, audio/video sync)plus they have added some neat features for those that want to automate different sequences by adding av sync button which will setup other samsung components like DVD, surround sound, sat receiver , or HD box so that they can all work in harmony. Potentially neat feature if it works and a good impetus to buy other Samsung products if you are intimidated by all the remotes. |
Brendon Unregistered guest | ANYBODY ELSE SEEN THE HLP4674W ? Thanks Klaus for the info. I am about to buy same unit (HLP4674w) probably from vanns.com and I am looking for any other first-hand viewing experiences, especially from people who have had experience with other recent DLP or Plasma sets. I am also disturbed by long wait, 6-segment wheel, lower contrast than previously advertised.... but the proof is in the pudding, lets hear about performance not marketing. |
New member Username: StealthmanPost Number: 1 Registered: Nov-04 | I have seen that most people that have bought it like the JVC(HD52Z575) 52" D-ILA HD Rear Projection TV. I was originally going to but the Sony KF-50WE610 (even had the entertaiment center cabinet made for it). After reading about the Samsung DLP I changed my mind and was going to go with the HLP5063, but once again am undecided. When I saw the 5085 I was getting my checkbook ready until I saw that the stand is part of the TV. I don't feel like waiting for the next Gen sammy so I am looking at either the JVC or the new Sony Grand Wega KDF-50WE655 50-IN. It took the place of the KF-50WE610, has anyone seen the PQ on this TV? I found it for $2,199 and am itching to buy a TV. |
New Unregistered guest | Curtis, You won't like the Sony 655 model as much if you compare it to the new 955 Sony... |
Hblaze Unregistered guest | I went to the Good Guys, CC, and BB in Bellevue, Washington countless times to check out the usual suspects (?), i.e., samsung dlps, toshiba dlps, sony kdfs and the jvc dilas. The jvc dilas have a very natural and smooth pictures compared to the others; however, as you all already know, it is lcd-based projection technology, and the floor model already had a small green spot of pixil death. I personally like the pictures of Sony LCDs (60WF655 and 60XS955) for their brightness and detail/clarity as well as for thier handsome external design. Like many, I've been looking pretty much as Samsung dlp models for over a year since it was the best one for a while. What I'm beginning to realize as I'm getting very close to deciding on one is that the Sammy has very noticeable "ghosting" (is that what they call it?) or smearing of moving objects as they go from being unfocused to focused. This takes much longer for the Sammy vs the Sony lcds I've seen. And this drives me nuts as it gives me a nice headache and motion sickness. From what I can tell at various forums is that both Sammy dlps and sony lcds have significant problems with short-lived lamps and on/off boards. And while sammy also has the problem of a/v sync problem, along with less significant (less freq) rainbow problem and ghosting, the sony has the problem of pixil deaths-- which are permanent and can cost a lot to fix. So, I buy the extended warranties for 3 to 5 years.... which are expensive considering I've never had any problems with televisions in the past 30 years (several units).. but likely situation is that the problems start after the warranties are expired... Please chime in if anyone is inclined to regarding the tradeoffs between different makes and models and technologies. Shhhhhhssshhh. |
Brendon Unregistered guest | I found the HLP4674W at the Best Buy near my house in San Diego (Mira Mesa). The price is $3347. I said I could get it online for $3000 with no tax, but he would only take $200 off. Also, the extended warranty is $400 for 4 years. I did not buy it. I am no expert but picture quality looks good, noticeably brighter when your head is at TV-level (rather than standing in front) and also I noticed, when standing and looking down at the screen, the text (such as the football score) you can see ghosting, it is very obvious and worse if you are looking down at sharp angle, seems like the image is visible on front and back of the glass. My wife went around and said all the DLP sets did that but not the plasma screens. Is this normal? You can see the image from side angle very well, almost 180 degrees of viewing, but less bright of course when viewing from the side. |
New member Username: StealthmanPost Number: 2 Registered: Nov-04 | New, the only problem is the the 955 has the speakers on the side and it makes it too long for my cabinet. |
