Bronze Member Username: KenmurPost Number: 13 Registered: Nov-04 | ed...NO, just a price from another dealer that when they hear, they know and offer right away to help make up your mind. As for the $2620. it was a RETAIL price that they used, minus 15%... 44" ~ $3199.99 - $480. = $2620. 52" ~ $3199.99 - $600. = $3400. I have used price matching with them over summer when I bought a digital camera - the price dropped 2 times and they refunded me both times. cheers P.S. Just purchased a 19" LCD monitor and am looking to pick up a notebook over the holiday period. I make most electronic purchases at the end of year and I am always rewarded in doing so. |

Bronze Member Username: EdaudiyocomPost Number: 21 Registered: Nov-04 | Ms. Sirengal, may I ask, where did you purchase your unit from? Thanks. |
Bronze Member Username: KenmurPost Number: 17 Registered: Nov-04 | ed, Earlier quote of $3199.99 - 15% = $2719.99 (not $2620. as stated earlier). The sales fellow had given me that figure and I did not check it, but it is $2720. not $2620. ...sorry about that. As for the $2720. I asked at another Future this afternoon and they quoted me $2700. w/ stand - that works out to $3105. and change w/taxes. The offer at $2700. also included up to 12 month no interest. They also offered an Extended Warranty of 3 yrs. for $319. I dunno Any thoughts..? |
Bronze Member Username: KenmurPost Number: 18 Registered: Nov-04 | Jean, Does the split screen show in full height..? Unregistered guest | I'm about to plunk down $2000 (US) and get a 44NHM84 (Video Only, did not take much to dicker them down from list). I need to stick with the 44 to fit it into my furniture, and the Tohiba is the smallest 44 on the outside. I would have preferred black over silver, but it looks like the lower bezel will come off easily for spray painting. I have not been able to see the Toshiba and the LG side-by-side, but I believe I see a heavier anti-glare coating on the Toshiba. Close-up, it seems to blur the picture more than I like. Does anyone know if the anti-glare shield can be removed by the consumer? Would that void the warranty? BTW, lets give a hand to Jean for his tireless effort on this forum - I have gleaned a lot of info here that was not available anywhere else. |

TomN Unregistered guest | Just hooked up the Toshiba 44NHM84 and could not be more pleased with picture quality. I have it hooked up to a surround sound sytem and Direct TV. Watched Finding Nimo on Direct TV (HBO?) and was truely impressed by color, clarity, and contrast. I also looked at the Samsung, but am glad I selected the Toshiba. Got a service conract from GE through Vidio Only and it does cover the bulb. I talked to a rep from GE and he indicated it is definetly covered. |

This was at NFM in Omaha, NE. I'm strongly considering getting it. Bestbuy doesn't have it. To bad, I wanted to start a price war and get this tv for $1699 |

My Video card is a AVI/RADEON 9600XT which has an S-Video, DVI and D-15 pin. The DVI is being used from my TV to the HDTV Satellite Receiver. Any idea? |
Bronze Member Username: JeanmontyPost Number: 20 Registered: Nov-04 | Hi all, I see you're still talking about the Toshiba. Ms Sirengal : just use the D-sub 15 pins since the input at the back of the tv which is marked 'RGB input' is just that. Jean |

Anonymous | I bought this TV at Toshiba's twice-annual warehouse sale in Markham, ON for $2400 with stand. Nice deal, eh? TV is great. Unfortunately my LOOK digital signal kinda stinks on most channels most of the time, I'll take it up with them. Have any of you been tweaking the picture? Although mine is very nice I think it can probably be improved. I generally just use the "movie" pre-settings on the video menu. |

Bronze Member Username: SirengalPost Number: 25 Registered: Dec-04 | What is a "gamma"? Jean, I connected my DVI to my Video Card instead and used the Monster Components from Satellite HDTV Receiver to my TV...works like a charm! |
Bronze Member Username: JeanmontyPost Number: 22 Registered: Nov-04 | Glad you were able to use the DVI input. The gamma setting is a mean to reveal what'in hidden in the shawdows, to a point, without overblowing the mid range values, like it would happen if we were just using the brightness control. Jean |
MikeFJ Unregistered guest | How does the free stand that comes with this TV angle in at the back? Does anybody, because I would be putting this ina a corner, and I'm curious what the profile of the back is. |
MrSuaveh Unregistered guest | Kenmur, I hooked up my laptop the 44NHM84 via the RGB port in the back. The laptop hits my wireless access point for internet surfing. ONE thing to keep in mind: For Internet surfing from the couch you will want to get a Bluetooth wireless keyboard/mouse. The regular wireless keyboard/mice have about 3-5 foot range, the bluetooth goes about 25 feet. As for using the PC/44NHM84 I couldn't be happier. You can view the output in 4:3 or 16:9 mode AND it does allow you to resize/move the image even in 16:9 mode. I've found that some TV's do NOT allow you to do this. Anyway, there isn't any issues with the PC hookup, although I would say the 44" is about as small as you can get and still read it from 8-10 feet away. Enjoy |
Bronze Member Username: SirengalPost Number: 26 Registered: Dec-04 | I have mine hooked up to a DVI Cable, what a nice clear screen. Can't wait 'til the channels are all HDTV! LOL |

Bronze Member Username: JeanmontyPost Number: 23 Registered: Nov-04 | MrSuaveh, the dlp tv are digital. The don't behave like a CRT computer monitor, which is an analog device an as such has no predetermined number of pixel, but rather like a flat LCD monitor. The resolution of the tv being 1280X720 this is the one you should choose if you want to get the best clarity ; otherwise the tv will have to compensate. The latest drivers from ATI offer that option. Jean |
Bronze Member Username: JeanmontyPost Number: 24 Registered: Nov-04 | Hello Ken ! You know, there are always horror stories and most of those border on urban legends. I bought a DLP set because it suited my needs. It is an excellent computer monitor while plasma are so-so and it never get the burned in bars at the side if you watch tv on it, or at the top and bottom if you watch panaramic DVDs like most are. But 3 000$ *is* a sum and I understand how you feel. Jean |

Bronze Member Username: SirengalPost Number: 27 Registered: Dec-04 | anti-topple is not needed for the 44NHM84 is safe if you get the stand that comes with it because it locks up into 1. The TV quality looks great. Eventually all digital cable channels will be HDTV. |

Anonymous | what monster cable? Component or S-VHS or other digital cable like DVI...? How's the 44NHM84 compare to standard CRT for standard boardcast? Merry Christmas |
newbuyer Unregistered guest | Hope this thread isn't dead..maybe you're all off for x-mas. anyway, just bought the 44NHM84 today. thought I got a great boxing day deal, but I guess some of you have been getting that price for a month. Anyway, I was doing some further research, and ran into some negative press about DLP. For the price I paid, I actually started to think I should return it, pick up a cheaper/bigger rear projection until the DLP technology matures a bit. I must say however, that this board has dispelled some of those myths. But I was wondering if some of you who've had the TV for a while can clear a few things up before I decide to pick it up this week or get something else: Is all this stuff about so-called "rainbowing" when you look side to side quickly overblown? does it happen often, do you have to actually look for it to make it happen? Also how is DLP for fast moving images (All I really watch is sports..well I now have a 7-month old, so cartoons too).. what is the 2+ chip about? People here seem to rave about it. Does it help smooth some of those shadowing and ranbow effects that are sometimes associated with DLP? In your opinions, should I scrap the extended warrenty, considering the only real long-term issue with these things are the lamps, and those aren't covered? I won't be getting moster cables for a while. How is the TV with regular digital cable connection? Thanks to whoever is still watching this thread. Look forward to hearing from you.. |
New member Username: S_mackPost Number: 2 Registered: Dec-04 | I just bought it too. I also got carried away and got FS's Samsung 43" DLP Door crasher for $1999. Which do I keep? Btw. I'm not planning on upgrading my cable (basic, and old house with crappy wiring) nor am I likely to go out and buy expensive Monster cables or a new DVD player, etc etc. With that being the case, am I just as well off with the non-DLP RCA that they have for a grand? |
Brumos Unregistered guest | You got the Toshiba and the Samsung? I originally planned on the Samsung doorcrasher as well, but while i was waiting in line to pay my sales associate told me it was sold out. I ended up getting the 44" toshiba... a blessing in desguise because that Samsung is last years model. You decide which to keep |
Anonymous | Steven and Brumos, how's the Toshiba on standard boardcast? As for the Samsung vs Toshiba, the Samsung is the previous generation (HD2) DLP. I compared the new Samsung 46" HD3 DLP side by side with the Toshiba 44" and the Sony 42" LCD RPTV. I think the Toshiba and Sony are better, and the Toshiba is slightly better than the Sony. HD2+ is the supposed to be the high-end chipset which is 2x to 3x more contrast than HD2. HD3 is the upgrade of HD2, it has 50% more contrast than HD2. Anyone know if the Toshiba has 7 segments color-wheel? BTW, I also compared the Toshiba 52" DLP to JVC, I didn't have a chance to play with the settings but the JVC looks better. However some here suggest that the 44NMH84 maybe actually a LG with HD2+... |
New member Username: S_mackPost Number: 3 Registered: Dec-04 | I haven't actually received either television yet, so I can't answer your question. The salesperson did tell me that the Toshiba was made at the LG plan (same as a Zenith model that looks the same) but has two differences - the HD2+ chip (which is good) and a samsung lamp (which is not so good according to him). Other than that (again, occording to him), they are identical beyond cosmetics. I did get a chance to see the two side-by-side today in the store. The Toshiba looked awesome, and the Samsung not-so-much. Unfortunately though, the Toshiba had a HDTV demo while the Samsung was being used to demo a Bose sound system and only had the Bose demo dvd going, so it wasn't apples to apples. |
Sekaran Unregistered guest | Couple of issues I saw in this 44NHM84 and may be i am missing something. I am using HD input(colorstream HD input) 1. Closed caption is always greyed out in the menu and I am unable to see CC to work in any channel. Have anyone seen this? 2. PIP has input video1/video2/TV and I am not seeing a source for colorstream HD where I can pass my HD as input to PIP. Am I missing something? I am having dish network HD satellite reciever. |
New member Username: FtdPost Number: 1 Registered: Dec-04 | Steven I did the same thing and bought both T-44nhm84 just before Xmas and the Sam-HLN4365W at the Boxing Day sale, sucker for a good deal. I do not have either one yet. I know the Toshiba has the better chip HD2+, but I was having second thoughts about the $700. plus taxes in the difference. After reading along here, I think the Samsung will be going back. Let me know how you make out. |
newbuyer Unregistered guest | Hey folks. wondering if anyone can answer some of the questions I had about the Toshiba posted early this morning 2:15 am .... |
New member Username: S_mackPost Number: 4 Registered: Dec-04 | Hey Frank - that's kinda funny that we both did the same thing with the same tvs Good to know I'm not alone. I'm now pretty sure I'll take back the Samsung and go with the Toshiba. I'm comfortable that the newer technology and overall sharper look (cosmetically I mean) is worth the extra $$$. It isn't really $700, considering the Toshiba came with a stand for me - so that makes the decision all the more easier. I am still concerned overall with paying this kind of cash for a technology that still has deficiencies... but how long does one wait for the perfect technology? "newbuyer" - I can't answer most of your questions, but I think I can address the rainbow effect thing, since I did in fact witness it on the Toshiba. For the most part, it seems that it is a non or small issue for most people. It is simply something that different people see to different extents because of the slight differences in vision and how our brains interpret the signals it receives. For me, I can only notice it when I quickly move my eye away from the screen to some off-screen object and even then it is ever-so-slight. Not even noticable if I wasn't looking for it. Others, I understand, see it more readily and would become quite bothered by it. Some again, are incapable of seeing it at all. So if you are considering the unit just for yourself, I would suggest you go to a store and look at a DLP for a bit and "jiggle" your eye around from side to side. It also "helps" to see it if you spread your fingers and wave your hand in front of your face while watching the tv. Although you look extremely stupid while doing it, you can see the rainbow effect in the "blur" of your fingers. Or at least you can if you are able to see it. If you are considering this purchase for family viewing, I'd suggest you bring your family or perhaps your close friends along to view it with you. See if they see it. You probably don't want people constantly complaining about it, whether or not you see it at all. For me, its going to be my girlfriend and I watching it 99% of the time, and since it doesn't bother either of us, it is really a non-factor. Hope that helps - Steven |
Bronze Member Username: SirengalPost Number: 29 Registered: Dec-04 | Steven: I went over to Bestbuy to choose a DLP TV and compared the Samsung to the Toshiba. The HD2+chip is what made my choice. The Toshiba looks way sharper than the Samsung. Regarding the rainbow effect, I don't get that. It's true that some people do get the rainbow effect. I also have my PC connected to it with a Monster DVI cable. |
Anonymous | newbuyer, no comment about rainbow effect. All HDTV sucks on SD but on avg, DLP is better than LCD RPTV, and a few users say the 44NHM84 has surprisingly good SD quality. In terms of quality, HD2+ is better than HD3, HD3 is better than HD2. I don't think HD2+ is the answer for rainbow effect. To eliminate rainbow effect, you need a 3-DMD solution. I didn't go for any extended warranty myself, HT equipments are commodity imo. If you want the peace of mind, make sure you go for one that covers the lamp. From what I read, unless you need a long cable. Monster cable is not needed at all... Any 75ohm cable should do the job. BTW Leon was selling the real Toshiba 52HM84 for 2999 including stand and shipping yesterday. I passed the deal I found the 52HM84 doesn't sit tightly on the matching stand. I bought the 44NHM84 instead, should arrive in a week. BTW2, Costco is selling the Samsung 43" DLP for $1980 without the stand. |
New member Username: S_mackPost Number: 5 Registered: Dec-04 | Alright then. I was going to say, "I'm going to cancel my 1999 Samsung order unless someone here wants it" but if Costco has it for less anyway then I guess its not that great of a Boxing Day sale ;) Thanks for the headsup |
M L Unregistered guest | I have the 44nhm84 and Rogers digital (HD) cable (Toronto, Ontario). It's (the cable) is hooked up through the component input. I'd like to use the PIP feature but the TV doesn't seem to offer either of the "Colorstream" inputs as an option for the PIP feed. Any solutions anyone know of for this? |
newbuyer Unregistered guest | Thanks for the replies folks. I'm pretty confident now that the rainbow effect is a non-issue. anonymous, thanks for the heads up about the 52" at leons. I decided to go for that instead. I mean 300 more bucks? If you can believe it, future shop didn't want to match it. They tried everything-- said Leons was playing games, that was their door crasher and Leon's didn't really have any in stock. They even offered an extra 100 bucks off the sale price 44 if I kept it. Finally they agreed to $2900 (they're selling it for 3900), said I would have to wait because "they didn't have any right now." I said fine, and when I recapped the deal, adding leon's offer of free delivery, the FS manager got pissed and suggested I go to Leons then. Well, I took his advice, and got the 52 for $3445 taxes in, stand, and delivery. he didn't even push the extended warrenty. I'm not sure if FS broke company policy (match ANY price and take off 10%--or is that best buy?), but if they did, I'm writing head office. Well that's my story. Thanks for all the advice. |
Harry Ballzonia Unregistered guest | I just bought this amazing 44' tv in brandsmart (in florida) for ony 1798.00 and i am greatly pleased |
Petro Unregistered guest | Sorry for the late reply Lazar, but been away for the holidays. It was the BestBuy in Woodbridge where I got mine, not sure of the sales guy's name. As for the other discussions on the rainbow effect, I've only been able to watch a short time (maybe 6 hours worth), but have yet to see it myself. |
Anonymous | newbuyer, the Tosh has a nice feature, it uses a special design to display the picture almost instantly where most others will take 20 to 30 seconds. However I decided to go with 44NHM84 because the stand of the 52HM84 looks very cheap and very shaky. I don't have a chance to compare the 44NHM84 directly with the 52HM84 but the JVC HD-52Z575 is noticably better than the 52HM84. And I hear some good comments about 44NHM84's standard boardcast quality. Anyway, please keep us posted about your experience with 52HM84. FWIW, Futureshop does not normally price-match for item not in-stock. |
New member Username: S_mackPost Number: 6 Registered: Dec-04 | FWIW, Futureshop does not normaly price-match for anything significant ;P They always have an excuse. |
newbuyer Unregistered guest | Thanks Anonymous. After reading your post about the stand, I went to double-check myself. You're right, it is shaky on that stand. So i walked around the store and started nudging some of the other similar big screens on stands, and I would say 50% of other brands do the same thing. It is a bit of a concern for me, for I have a kid who will learn to walk in the next few months. However, there's supposed to be locking pins in the back as so the Tv won't lean forward. Worse comes to worse I'll upgrade the stand one day in the future if it looks that my son could knock it over. I will keep you informed on how the Tv is, although I won't be getting it for a few weeks. (finishing basement). BTW, does anyone know how it is with standard rogers digital? Should I get monster cables,a nd if so, which ones? Sorry, I'm a novice when it comes to this kind of stuff... |
newbuyer Unregistered guest | That me be true that they do not match for not in stock items, except that there was no indication that the 52 was out of stock. Their other TVs (like the samsung door crasher) were still displyed, but with a "sold" sticker on it. Not the Toshiba, and in fact, during this whole half-hour long negotiation, other salespeople were showing the 52 to customers. They simply did not want to give it to me at the same deal Leons had. That's fine. Just tell me know and be done with it.. |
Anonymous | Newbuyer, One thing to keep in mind is that many of these stands have a piece which can be screwed on to the back to make these TVs much sturdier, however stores usually don't put these on because of how often they have to move the TVs. May not be the case with all stands but should be true for any stand custom designed for specific models. |
Bronze Member Username: SirengalPost Number: 30 Registered: Dec-04 | Newbuyer: I bought the 44" and the stand that comes with it is very sturdy cause there is also a locking clip in the back of the TV. Regarding Digital Cable, I had it and I was seeing shadows on the screen. I brought my Digital Cable Box back to Future Shop and bought an Express Vu HDTV Receiver and I am much happier with it. I also have Monster Components instead of RCA cables which does make a big difference. You'll also need a good Surge Protector, remember you are buying a TV that is worth over $3500. |
New member Username: S_mackPost Number: 7 Registered: Dec-04 | Ok, I know I can just wait until my set is (finally) delivered, but I'm getting nervous now, so I thought I'd ask I hear about "ghosting" and other poor quality affects of standard cable. There's probably no way I'm going to be switching to Satelite and I won't bother to get Digital cable, since all the channels I watch are non-digital anyway... so I'm sticking with good ol' basic cable. So I recognize that the signal will be no way near what the tv is capable of processing, BUT... am I not correct at least in saying that this tv will be an upgrade to the 25 year old 19" I have now? Actually, I think the picture of my existing tv is pretty darn good, considering its age... so I *shouldn't* be too hard to impress So when people say that regular cable sucks on the Toshiba (or any DLP for that matter), are they speaking relative to HDTV or DVD... or does it really suck?? Like am I going to wish I had kept the 19"? |
Anonymous | Sirengal, Does the HDTV box make a different on standard boardcast too? Regarding Monster cables, how long is you RCA cables? Are you comparing a RCA connection to a DVI or component connection? If yes, this is not a fair comparison. I doubt you will notice a difference on component source between a decent 75ohm cable (most yellow video cable) on component source vs a Monster THX certified cable. DVI is digital signal, so any brand that meet the spec should be identical in theory. From what I see in the store, I agree that the LG made 44NHM84 stand is among the best like the Sony. (Every Sony has a anti-topple strap.) It's funny the first few page of every Toshiba manual stress the importance of having a good stand but they don't make good stand for their own home-made HDTV. Finally for surge protector, it doesn't need to be very expensive one but get one with no less than 300j, clamping ceiling of 300V and UL listed as transient voltage surge surpressor. |
Anonymous | Steven, >> So when people say that regular cable sucks on the Toshiba (or any DLP for that matter), are they speaking relative to HDTV or DVD... or does it really suck?? << They are speaking wrt HDTV. Even DVD needs to be scaled to 720p and can look fuzzy on some sets. Sad but we may all find our old 19" to 32" CRTs handle standard boardcast better than the upgraded HDTV. But once you switch to HD, it is quite a different experience. |

New member Username: FtdPost Number: 2 Registered: Dec-04 | Steven, I finally got my Toshiba 44". This is my second HDTV, I was using a Samsung Direct View (tube HDTV), before this one. It was posted that all HD televisions suck on standard broadcast and to some degree; at least in my experience they are right. When I bought my first HDTV two years ago I was expecting too see big improvements and I was disappointed big time. Standard broadcast was worse and sales people do not tell you this. HDTV's show a lot of detail and that includes lines/snow effects and all sorts of interference on standard broadcast. BUT !!! the huge improvement in digital and especially HD broadcasts were amazing. I went out and got a cable amp and hooked the Samsung via direct cable, bypassing the HD box, and standard programs looked much better. I want to warn you that your little 19" probably looks better on standard broadcast than the larger HDTV will. But your Toshiba is a very good HDTV even on standard broadcast casts. It has a built in signal "Booster" and you just hook up your regular cable directly to the back and turn the booster feature on and you should be fine. The larger screen size will take some getting use to but it's worth it. You have good TV and it's loaded with great features so if you do decide to venture into the HD world in the future it's ready. My Toshiba 44" set up was quick and easy. Currently I am using component connections with HD Cable Box (from Cable Company) along with DVD player (480p) also on component cables. I will be getting DVI cable soon to optimize the whole set up. I like everything so far. I have to admit that my older direct view (tube) HDTV looks better in high def. than this one; I believe that Direct View and high end Plasma and true LCD are still the best HD picture quality. But limited screen size and high cost made me look at DLP. I think DLP is better picture quality and more reliable than LCD in Rear Projections and this new line of Toshiba DLPs is very good. |
Anonymous | Frank, any chance to compare the Toshiba with Samsung DLP? Does it has auto aspect-ratio mode? |
Anonymous | I bought the 44" today in Video Only in Salem, OR, for $1950. List price was $2199. So far I am happy with it. But I do suspect that it was built by LG, and here is why: I was looking at the LG 44" DLP model and the model number had RU-44SZ in it. My Toshiba had a sticker on the plastic bag with the owner manual that sad Model No: RU-44SZ84D. The manual itself, however, had 44NHM84 printed on the cover, as well as the sticker on the back of the TV. And the SN on the TV matches the SN listed on the sticker on the plastic bag. Also, my TV was built in Korea, home of the LG. Go figure. |
newbuyer Unregistered guest | I'm reading so many conflicting reports on the Toshiba in relation to HD. I think the consensus is that standard cable sux on the Toshib DLP. Most people say that, obviously, HD-broadcasts with HDTV reciver is fantastic on this TV. But it's the middle ground that I find most confusing. Some people swear that even with HD subscription, channels that do not broadcast in HD still suck just as bad as standard cable )to what degree I'm not sure) Others yet insist that non-HD broadcasts are fine if you shrink the screen size, while I've read other reports that say even non-HD are great. What are all your experiences? |

" I did view the Toshiba 44" and Samsung 46" side by side; I thought the Toshiba was a better overall picture. They use different DLP chips. Toshiba uses HD2+ and Samsung's current model I viewed uses HD3 chip. Samsung does uses the HD2+ chip in their higher end models. Here is a good link that will explain in more detail...... http://www.dtvmax.com/main.htm I do not know about "auto aspect-ratio" did you find out anything on that? newbuyer, This Toshiba looks good on standard broadcasts you just have to make some adjustments to the settings, screen size etc. unlike non HD tvs that you just plug in and go. I have a first generation HDTV (Tube style) from Samsung and this Toshiba is better on standard broadcast that it (newer technology). Before buying anything, you should find a retailer with the model your interested in, and get them to show you standard, digital and HD broadcasts so you can come to your own conclusions. |
newbuyer Unregistered guest | Yeah, I already bought (not delivered yet). I did view at the store (52"). The standard ditital looked Okay, while HD-broadcasts looked great. But Some people say the SD is unwatchable. Just wondering if they have a really high standard, or I didn't pay close enough attention at the store display... |
MartyM Unregistered guest | I just bought the 44NHM84 last week and when plugging it in at home, thought it looked great on the basic digital cable that I have (not all channels are digital). Yesterday, I had a High Definition cablebox installed by Wide Open West (WOW)...and all I can say is WOW...what an amazing picture especially on the HD channels! Even the cable guy who installed the box mentioned that it was the best HD picture he had seen on a new HD set and he had installed a number of them (even a 52" Toshiba recently). Before I bought the set, I called Toshiba (U.S.) and talked with them about it and asked if it would be warranted by the U.S. services because I did not see it on their website (Canada only). They said it was covered and even had specs on it that he read to me. I bought my set at ABC Warehouse (their retail is $2500, but they will take 20% less) and they even gave me a written 2 week guarentee return policy. 4 year extended warranty is $369 if I want it. My recommendation...get the TV and be sure to get a HD cablebox with it...it makes a difference! |
New member Username: FtdPost Number: 4 Registered: Dec-04 | To those of you that now own the new Toshiba TI HD2+ DLP HDTVs. Did you take the extended warranty offered by your retailer?? I have read about durability tests on all brands of DLP TVs and they say the only component that will wear out in the 4 or 5 year mark, under normal viewing conditions, is the lamp. The replacement cost for the lamp runs around $250. to $300.(cdn). I took an extended 4 year warranty that cost about $425. (Cdn) after taxes. I'm thinking that it was a mistake and that I should refund the warranty and just pay for a replacement lamp in 4 or 5 years. These TVs are costly enough, so I'm thinking what the heck did I give them another $425. for a unit that has been tested and highly reliable. I would appreciate any feedback on this warranty issue from other owners. Thanks. |
New member Username: S_mackPost Number: 8 Registered: Dec-04 | I took the warranty, but I was told by the salesman that it DID include the lamp. I'm going to double check with the warranty company. If it does not, then I will get a refund on the warranty as, like you, I believe the product to be well made. Just be VERY picky about your satisfaction during the first year! If something is humming or rattling or loose and you aren't comfortable with it GET IT FIXED or take it back and exchange it. |
newbuyer Unregistered guest | I agree with you guys. I passed on the warranty. Most research I've done says the lamp is the only main issue with DLPs, and since Toshiba's DLPs are said to have the least reported problems, I thought the warranty was uneeded. Like all products -- mechanical or electronic -- you run the risk of getting a lemon. But I figured you can tell if you have a real s**t box within the first year anyway when you can still do something about it. I read the lamp is about 250 CDN and you can istall it yourself. Maybe in 4-5 years it will be even cheaper. As for lamps being included in the warranty, they're not. Read your warranty carefully. salesman will tell you anything. I don't know if in the end not getting the warranty is a good or bad idea, but one thing is for sure, the true answer won't come from a salesman. Their bread and butter is warranties, (higher commish rate -- sometimes almost all of it) that's why they push them even more than the product itself. |
PThebes Unregistered guest | Christmas week, I purchased a Toshiba 44NHM84 from Bernie's in Connecticut for $2380 including 3 year service plan which includes the bulb. Picture is excellent with DirectTV and fantastic with new Toshiba DVD. Have no plan to order HDTV yet. Even my old VCR tapes look better than my 15 year old 27" Toshiba it replaced. Happy so far. |
MartyM Unregistered guest | By the way, I forgot to mention that I got my TV in Detroit (ABC Warehouse). My salesperson said the bulb was covered under the extended warranty, but until I read the warranty details, I won't believe him. Unless I have a problem over the next week, I'm not going to get the warranty. So far, everything has been excellent. The bulb is expected to last 8000 hours. At 3-4 hours per day (that is high usage for me), it should last about 5 years or so. It was great watching some of the high def. football games this past weekend, and I look forward to more HD games over the next few weeks (SuperBowl for the U.S. fans!). |
New member Username: FtdPost Number: 5 Registered: Dec-04 | Steven and newbuyer, Thanks for your feedback. I got my Toshiba at Future Shop. Two stores in my area, the one I bought the TV from, said the bulb was covered under the extended warranty, the other store said it was not (doesn't that feel warm and fuzzy). Newbuyer your exactly right, these guys push that warranty more than the TV. Good thing this TV sold itself. I'm going to can that BS job they sold me. Check in occasionally and let us know how your units are holding up. Good Luck |
newbuyer Unregistered guest | will do frank. if you got the 44" Future shop was a great deal. I decided to get the 52" at leons for just 300 more. FS refused to match the whole deal (stand and delivery). You can read the whole story I posted last week, if you care. Hey martyM, I'm one canuck that lives for the NFL. I haven't even noticed hockey is gone until that last whistle of the SB. Looking forward to watching it on my new TV as well. |
sir_enitie Unregistered guest | I bought the Toshiba 44NHM84 just after Christmas from an mom & pop electronics store in Toronto. I managed to talk the guy down to $2400 (CAD, delivery thrown in), and I'm absolutely loving it. I've got it connected using component video cabling to both DVD and Digital Cable box, with plans to upgrade to DVI in the near future. The picture quality is impressive (to say the least) when viewing high definition channels, absolutely oustanding when viewing actual HD broadcasts, but somewhat less than remarkable when viewing standard definition stations. I have to admit that I prefer viewing SD cahnnels on the 27" tube TV that I have in my bedroom. Furthermore, as the majority of programming (even on so-named "high definition" stations) is presented in 4:3 standard definition, I'm often forced to choose between living with the annoying vertical sidebars, or using the "stretch" function on my HD digital cable box. The stretch feature fills the screen, but also slightly distorts and further degrades SD content. For anyone who hasn't expereinced this, I liken viewing stretched SD content on this television to viewing an MPEG on your computer screen at 300% of original size. Sure, it's bigger, but it's fuzzy and distorted, and gives you a headache. The upside to this complaint almost all of my local broadcasters and all major US networks have a corresponding HD station, and more and more programming is being broadcast in 16:9 HD. There will come a time (in the relatively near future) when virtually all programming will be available in this format. |
New member Username: Sir_enitieToronto, ON CANADA Post Number: 1 Registered: Jan-05 | Answers to a few questions posted here: 1. The 44NHM84 is 40.5" wide and just over 29" high. Not sure about the precise depth, but it's around 12". The information on all manuals (and retailer web sites) is incorrect, as it was based on different cabinetry that wasn't used in the end. 2. Best Buy warranty DOES cover the lamps (they were one of the retailers that I consulted, though I didn't buy from them in the end), but most other third-party extended warranties do not. In any case, it's probably a waste of money for this particular technology/model unless you're REALLY concerned about being stuck with a lemon after the expiration of the manfacturer warranty. You will not reach the break even point on Best Buy's warranty program with one bulb replacement; furthermore, and by all accounts, replacement bulb costs will tumble dramatically in the next 3-5 years. Remember, retailer profit margins are relatively slim on these types of consumer electronics. They make a lot more on the warranties, which are hard-sold to the end consumer using scare tactics. Don't be suckered in. |
Anonymous | I received mine on Monday night. I tried it yesterday and failed to get any picture from AV1, AV2 and the front input with S-VHS or RCA. Is it DOA or is there any special instruction to power up the TV for the first time? |
