Has anybody seen anything more on the Syntax 50" LCoS set. PC Connection is apparently selling it for $1900. I am intrigued by the fact that it has a VGA input that supports 1280x1024. If it does motion well, that would make one hell of a gaming set. Also, one comment about little known Asian companies. Four years ago, nobody ever heard of Apex. Then they started selling $50 DVD players in Circuit City. While not the most feaature laden players, I still have 2 that are a few years old. They play anything and are perfect for the 19-27" sets I have in the spare bedrooms. Anyway, I recently purchased their 27" LCD set for my master bedroom. I've yet to see a "name brand" Japanese LCD that has a comparible picture. So, personally I am not put back by the name Syntax. I would be very interested in hearing more about peoples experiences with their LCoS. I've decided on the JVC for my home theatre, but I wouldn't be adversed to putting a 50" set in my workout/gaming room, especially if I can connect it to my computer at 1280x1024.

Extreme tech reviewed the set. You can read it here: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,1745870,00.asp

I think they were a little hard on it, but if I was trying to stay under 2k for a new set I might have to pick one up.

Mr. Lynch,
I have the 52" dila and in the past week I have had a flash of all green and black picture, which has happened about three times with no other colors. I thought it may be the feed from adelphia but not sure. It last about 2 or 3 seconds then cures itself. Any thoughts if it could be related to previous green issues?

That sounds like an signal issue. I see stuff like that every now and then with Comcast. Does it happen when watching DVDs or sources other than the cable box?

Great message board - thank you all - I've just purchased at Best Buy (2709 - Office Depot price match) - it'll be delivered on Saturday!! Now here are the questions

1. Should I pay $399 for Best Buy's 4 year warranty? (my credit card does double the manufacturer's warranty, so I already would have two years parts and labor)
2. How much does it really cost to replace the bulb? (I've heard $300, $500 and $800)
3. If I don't get Best Buy's warranty and something goes wrong outside of warranty - who do I call? Local TV repair guy or some specialist?

Any other advice?

Thanks in advance.

I went into the service menu and found the following settings:

S030 (R drive): 128
S031 (G drive): 128
S032 (B drive): 117

...so red and green were hot! I brought down R and G to 117 and colors look better to me now - at least after a half hour of combined SD, HD, and DVD viewing.

I had completely overlooked these settings when browsing the service manual. Thanks to Mr. Lynch for specifically calling them out.

I'll play around with these settings more over the weekend and let you know what I settle on.

Novice here looking to buy this JVC television.

What's the difference between the HD-52Z575 and HD-52Z585?

Both are 52". Is one model better than the other?

Nachoman,

The 575 has a silver front and the 585 is all black. Also, the 585 has the Smart Sound option and the 575 does not.

Hello everyone. I've been following the forum for a little while and guess it's time to join in. I picked up my 52Z575 last week and love it, but I do think I have a couple of problem on my set with an August manufacture date.

I have some of the smuges on the screen people have been talking about, probably 2" x 6" on the left side of the screen. And if I have a dark screen up I see green blossoming from the upper left, lower left, and lower right corners. The upper right corner appears to be more black or purple, with little green. In general, if the picture is not dark, everything looks great. I guess I'm going to need to take some pictures and call JVC.

Mr. Lynch, thanks for all of your excellent input. Could you please send me a copy of the service manual? My e-mail is harveys@nc.rr.com.

I'll let you know how I make out with JVC.

Survey Request ...

What do you have hooked to the HDMI port? Cable/Sat or DVD?

All along I've been hooking my DVD to the HDMI port, but last night I switched and put the Comcast Cable on HDMI and went to component on the DVD at 480p.

I believe there is some strange interaction going on with the HDMI input and upscaling DVD players that exasperates some color decoding issues. I love the smoothness of the Sony upscaler, but going into the HDMI it's hard to be satisfied with the colors.

So, I'm going to flip the inputs for a little while and live with it and see how this performs.

I'll report findings .. <g>

Angelo,

I have a few DVD questions. Purchased the 52Z585 Jan1. My Sony DVP-NC665P is connected to Input-1 (Component). With both 480i & 480p output, I am getting the grey bars top & bottom. None of the available aspect settings will fix this. If I want to remove the grey bars, must I purchase one of the upconverting DVDs with 720P output?

Thanks,

Bill R.

I use DVI->HDMI for my Comcast connection and component (my only option) to my JVC DVD player. From what I can tell, the JVC DVD only outputs 480P -- but, with the DVD player set to wide (16:9) screen -- I have no top/bottom/side grey bar issues.

I also have my Comcast Motorola DCT6412 DVR 4:3 Override set to "OFF". This lets the 52z575 do all the upscaling and has the major added bonus of showing 4:3 SD broadcasts with black side bars (as opposed to JVC's light grey bars). Of course, I have the DVR output 720P for HD broadcasts.

Bill,

I'm not familiar with that player, but it should have a 16:9/4:3 TV aspect ratio setting someplace.

Also, it may have it's own "Full screen modes" similiar to the JVC's. You'll want that is Normal or Full .. depending on what they call it.

My 1st guess would be the 16:9 setting isn't set correctly in conjunction with your JVC screen mode being incorrect.

Thanks for the quick reply about Sony DVD aspect ratios. I will check/revise this evening. Also, is the PQ improvment in the 720p DVD players worth upgrading from 480p?

Looks like your DVD has a lot of the controls mine does (excellent).

I'd set it to Progressive Cinema (pg 18)
I'd set the color mode to Cinema2 (pg 55) .. or Memory and set it up custom
I'd set black levels to OFF and set TV Type to 16:9 (pg 63).

Sailbyte a Big Thank You !!!!!!!!!!!
A jem of a setting in your post! Not only is this forum informative for potential buyers of the JVC it is also usefull for current owners.

I use component not DVI>HDMI from my set top box to the JVC but this works fine with my setup too.

I reset my Motorola DVR 6412 with the 4:3 overide set to off and low and behold, Black side bars instead of Grey! (We all like black better)

To all who have the Motorola 6412 you access the menu by pressing power and then menu within 5 seconds. After changing your settings press power, then power again. That's it!

gotta admit that some of these posts are making me wonder if I should go for it....other possibility is the sony 55xs model that just came out....dont care for the floating speaker look on the sides but it's got two hdmi in's and I haven't heard of many issues yet

Got my JVC 52" at Sears with a price match and on a 10% off everthing day for $ 2450.00 + tax + $40 delivery.

Afterwards, while looking for an AVR reciever the local store "Video Only" (that gave me the 2850 price I used at Sears for the price match) said they would match Sears $2450, If I haven't taken delivery yet. (I didn't accept, no advantage and I didn't want to "burn" the really nice Sears salesman)

I believe you can purchase the 52" JVC for $ 2450 from your local store and avoid the possible pitfalls and high freight costs of purchasing online. Tell the store to take it or leave it! Be prepared to walk! Don't be surprised if the manager runs after you to close the deal.

Use your Visa or Amex premium card for a free "double the manufacturers warranty", extends the JVC to 2 year warranty at no additional cost.

JVC has a better picture than Sony hands down.
Sony quality has suffered over the past 10 years in my opinion.

To all (re: black side bars), glad I could help. The funny thing is, the first time I noticed it was after I applied all the settings posted by Mr. Lynch (many thanks) -- and for a while I thought it had something to do with the settings. Then (just before my post) I noticed in the DVR manual (http://broadband.motorola.com/dvr/dct6412.asp >> user guides) the following:

4:3 Override Sets the display format for 4:3 standard-definition programming... OFF displays non-high-definition programs having a 4:3
aspect ratio in wide screen format. On an HDTV, black bars display on the left and right of the picture.

For all you have done for me in helping me choose and configure my JVC, I am glad I could help too.

Thank's guy. It was the 61inch that the sales person quoted me. BestBuy has it for $2850.00

I'm sure after I purchase it I'll be back with some question's. Seems to me that out of the box it will need some tweeking. I have comcast and they say the HD box is HDMI is there anything I should know while connceting it. My DVD player is old so I'm not going to bother connecting it. I'll wait and get a new one. Suggestions's on one that's in the $200-$400 range that will play well with this TV and If so what would you suggest the best hook-up to be. I'm not sure if I should run everything thru my Onkyo reciever It's new and has all the latest and greatest features and last but not least. Sony's PS2 that we have how would you handle that hook-up will only us it for games not anything esle. thanks agian from a NewBie..

I have a Panasonic S35 dvd player that I picked up at Frye's Electronics about 18 months ago for 59 bucks after rebates. Hooked up to my Harman Kardon AVR 235 via component, and the HK to the JVC via component. (All hookups on my setup are component)
The Panasonic DVD picture quality is near High Def.
No green problems, absolutely A-1 picture quality.

I got a DVI -> HDMI cable online at RAM electronics to connect my Comcast DVR to my JVC -- I am very happy. If you have all JVC components (audio + TV + DVD) you can use Compulink for one-button power-on, but the 52z575 is hardwired for video input 1 -- you still have to manually select digital in for the HDMI connection (I got my JVC DVD on-line for $69 and have been happy).

Thanks for the tips with the Motorola 6412 setting that turn the gray bar to the black bar. My kids like the black much better than the grey bars.

I have a question on Comcast's analog channels. My analogs channel on the JVC does not have as good a PQ as the Directv. The analog channel picture is a little noisy and not as sharp. Comcast digital channels are great. Do you think it is because the comcast signal is weak in my house or the noise is an inherent with analog signal? How is Comcast's analog channel PQ on your JVC?

Also with the 6412, I noticed at times the picture will freeze for no reason. The problem is solve by changing channel and back again. Anyone has this problem?

Thanks.

Comcast analog is channels 1-99 and picture quality is not that good, but acceptable.

Digital channels are 100 and above with some being High Def. Picture quality is very good to awesome on HD.

Freezing, I am assuming your "freezing" is happening on digital or high def channels. If so, you might be experiencing tiling as well (little squares). This can be caused by a weak signal. I removed a splitter in my cable and have not had the problem since. Splitters can reduce the signal by 3.5 db (I think that term is correct) and cause problems.

Jim, thanks for responding. I did find the link, after my previous post, regarding the picture freezing. Apparently the problem does happen on some 6412 and maybe due to weak signal. Do you know there is a way to check for signal strength with the 6412?
Anyway here is the link to all these:

I haven't tried it yet this moring, but the thread you referenced does describe how to check signal strength on the DVR:

Check the SNR on diagnostic screen 4. It should say good or at least fair. If it says fair or poor it may freeze and pixel occasionaly. Check this by:

1. Tune to a digital channel.

2. Turn the box off (leave tv on) and immediately press
the ok/select button.

3. Scroll down to #4 and press ok

4. Press the power button twice to turn the box back on.

Personally, I have had similar problems -- split screen on power-up until I change DVR channel and brief periods of loss of audio when watching HDTV. The audio is obviously not associated with my JVC 52x575 -- since sound goes directly to the surround Amp, and at one point I had multiple video inputs and switching JVC inputs did not correct the split screen -- only changing the DVR.

For the analog channels try using the JVC tuner instead of the cable box. I use a coax splitter with one output going to the cable box, and the other going to the JVC tuner (coax input). This allows me to use the PIP, and the analog channels come in with a little less noise when I switch to the "tuner" input.

Somewhere you indicated that you have the service manual for the JVC hd-52z585 or hd-52z585. At the JVC site they list two service manuals for the same TV:

LCT1612-001A-A Which one is correct?

On the hd-52z585 and I guess the hd-52z575
They have a center speaker input which is used for output from a receiver. The center speaker input is a RCA connector. Is it directly attached to the TV speaker? Do I use the receiver center speaker output. If it is attached directly attached to the TV speaker would any know if it is 4 ohm or 8 ohm impedenace?
I am asking if anyone knows how to use it.
Thanks Rex

Ed,

Nope .. I got the one for the 575 that Mr. L that sent me.

>> Sailbyte and the tale of the black bars

Beautiful Dude!! Love that setting.

>> Tweeking the green out

Well, I ventured into the service manual this weekend. Some of the settings I couldn't adjust since they call for a HD component source for the test signals .. and my DVD player will only output HD via HDMI.

Anyway, a couple things I learned.

#1) The manual was obviously a mediocre translation .. so it took me a little white to figure out what they are doing. In many settings, they tell you to set setting S0001 to various values. This puts the TV into different display/diagnostic modes .. so you'll set S0001 to something .. then check a settins and then put it back to value=0 after the test.

#2) Looking at the built in convergence pattern, I've got what I'd call pixel bleed .. i.e. the pattern doesn't line up directly with a pixel and the adjustments are for only 1 pixel each. If this was an older LCD computer monitor, I would be trying to adjust the "phase" which would move the entire bitmap across the pixel grid at a subpixel level. I didn't find any such adjustment.

#3) Following the manuals suggestions, I set Blue at 128 (mid value) and while feeding in an 80% white screen from DVE, was able to adjust a very neutral white with very minimum red and green phasing. That was just to get it close.

#4) While watching HD Football playoffs (packers' uniform was great), Return of the King (recorded HD on PVR) and Master and Commander (DVD), I continued to fine tune.

I've got it pretty darn good IMO and to a point that's hard to complain about .. even for me <g>. I've got good tint with a 0 setting in the JVC main menu.

The nice thing about the Service menu adjustment for tint control is that it is very unabtrusive .. just a little text in the upper left corner .. or in otherwords .. I got no complaints from the other viewers as I made my tweeks during our viewing.

1 recomendation though (which I didn't do)...

Before you change any settings, go thru each one and write down the current setting. Many of mine weren't set to the default values as indicated in the manual and in the darkness I accidentally hit the MUTE button .. so what they were set to prior is lost.

Mr. Lynch,

You said:
>>For the analog channels try using the JVC tuner instead of the cable box. I use a coax splitter with one output going to the cable box, and the other going to the JVC tuner (coax input). <<

I tried this for a couple weeks and (I think) the splitter was reducing my Comcast Signal strength. I was getting tiling and broken up audio at times on HD stations. I have since removed the splitter and the frequencing of tiling and broken up audio is significantly reduced, although the analog stations are not as good.
Also, using my new Harmony remote it is not possible to automatically change feed input to JVC coax input for channels 1-99 and Video 1 for 100+. Doing this manually would just confuse other users.

I wonder if a signal filter or amplifier would help improve the signal (I have a 70 foot run to my tv from the cable installation outside, don't want to put a powered amp out there, so I would have it at the tv)

Hello All,

Today they replaced a board in my TV and the problem I had with no audio through the HDMI connection from my Tosh DVD is fixed!

A question....I am playing my Motorola STB through the component feeds and even though my 4:3 overide setting is Off, I still get the gray sidebars. Does this only work if the STB is through the HDMI input?

I have had my 52Z575 for a week now and has been working great until today. went to turn it on and the red & blue led's were blinking rapidly. As it turns out, the lamp has blown out. Why? No clue. JVC is suppose to have someone call me withen 24 hrs then send a tech out to repair it.
Has anyone else had same or similar issues? Sure is a bummer JVC!!!

If you are going to add a cable signal amplifier, you need to put it where the cable enters the house, before any splitters. If you put it by the TV, you will just be amplifying a bad signal.

I was considering revising my cable inputs in the hope of improving my SD picture quality on the JVC, which really isn't that bad. Currently, where the cable enters the house I have a two way splitter where one line goes to my cable modem. I then have a Radioshack signal amplifier I got 2 years ago, which then feeds into a 3 way splitter to the JVC HDTV & two other TVs. I was considerding upgrading to a Radioshack bi-directional signal amp with 4 outputs and getting rid of all the splitters. However, everything is working pretty good now, so I am afraid of breaking things without any real increase in quality.

Since my digital and HDTV signals seem good, has anyone been able to clean up the JVC SD pictures with a cable signal amp?

When I went to HD with Comcast, they came over and said my signal was weak. I am more than 400 feet from the road.

Anyway they installed a signal amp for me. But I never got to see the picture before they installed the amp but it did improve my normal TVs throughout the house.

the service manual covers the HD52z575, HD52z585, HD61z575 and the HD61z585. They all use the same light engine and are assembled exactly the same.
The part numbers you listed (LCT1611-001 and LCT1612-001) are for the standard manuals that come with the TV. The Service manual part number is actually SML200407v7. It is a CD-rom that gives you access to the JVC service manual website. The disc is a "key" that allows you to download manuals for about 50+ different JVC products. They all come in PDF form.

Ang-

I hope you got my email. I sent you the S-00xx values of my set.

I searched for the service manual and couldn't find it (SML200407v7) When I call I'll try to order it. Thanks again Ed

Thanks for all your suggestions.

The JVC picture from Comcast analog channel seems to have improved and I did not do anything with the cabling or remove any splitter. The Directv picture is now slightly better (sharper) than the Comcast. I checked the 6412 diagnostic menu and it indicated the SNR signal is good, around 36dB. Also I have yet to experience picture freeze. I wonder what has change - maybe Comcast improves the signal (they did leave me a wierd message asking if I am still having problem but did not say what they have done, if any).

Unfortunately the picture on my other 2 TVs, non-HD,is still alittle grainy. Directv picture is much better on these 2 TVs. BTW with these 2 TVs, I had the Comcast cable connected directly to the TV's ANT input. I wonder if it is the TV's tuner that is not giving good picture. I should try moving the 6412 to these 2 TVs to see if the picture can be improved.

The Comcast tech did mentiopn two issue that they were aware of and working on.

1) SD quality
2) Guide freezing once in awhile

He stated fixes were in the works and it would several months before they released them. He als saided they would be sent out to the cable boxes.

>> comcast SD quality

As it was explained to me is that the new HD Motorola PVR's are don't have a very good analog decoder in them and channels 2-100 are analog only.

The worse channels are <10. You may notice that the higher the #, the better the picture.

The tech told be that they will soon be simulcasting 2-100 in both analog and digital so that all channels would look like 100+ channels.

I'm having Comcast out on Friday to run a dedicated line around the outside of my house for the HD set as my signal is so bad, I can't get on-demand.

Take a look here: http://www.jvcservice.com/Service/MdlPrtXrf.asp?PgReq=DspDta&MdlNbr=HD52Z585

It is hard to get into this section from the regular JVC website. You can buy any part you want for your set, including the service manual.

Sailbyte - "Since my digital and HDTV signals seem good, has anyone been able to clean up the JVC SD pictures with a cable signal amp?"

I was getting a very poor analog signal. Analog signal looked very grainy. I had Cox come out and install an amplifier at my demarc point. I now get a very good analog picture. Not as good as digital channels, but very acceptable. A bad feed is more often the culprit than the TV, in regards to picture quality. Many modern TV's are capable of an excellent picture.
While I don't have a JVC yet, the installation of an amplifier should be universal to all HDTV's.

Dan,
I too had a bulb go out in my JVC HD61Z585. I had it only two months and one day went to turn it on and got both the red and blue flashing. I called Video Only where I bought my set and they told me to try unpluging the TV for 5 minutes and then retry. I did and again only flashing lights. I then called the warranty repair tech and they had an opening to came out the next day. The tech took the old bulb out, looked at it and thought it still looked ok, (wasn't cloudy or broken) put it back in, turned the set back on, and it worked fine. He told me he thought it was a fluke bulb and he would order me a new one. The tech told me it might take a week with the holidays (X-mas/New Years) to get a new bulb, so hopefully it will hold up and last me another week. Two days later it went out again. I did the same thing as the tech had done(unpluged the set, pulled the old bulb out and re-inserted and it worked fine again) I didn't want to go through this for a week so I decided to call JVC and told them my sad story and how it was gonna take a week to 10 days to get a bulb and I am out of a new TV all because the repair facility couln't get me a bulb soon. JVC took down my info and told me that someone would call me back in 24 hrs. Better yet, JVC called me back within 1 hr and told me they would fed-ex me a new bulb over night!! NICE!!! JVC explained how these bulbs are very user friendly to replace. The next day I got my bulb as promised, and it was a snap to replace. Now three days later the repair tech calls me to say they now have my new bulb and wanted to scheduled a time to come out to replace. I said sure. The day they came out to replace, I took my new bulb out and put my old bulb back in. End result ....I now have a spare bulb on the shelf for emergencys. All I can say is that JVC service rocks!!

Anonymous,
The replacement is very simple. First UNPLUG the power cord from the wall. If you face the TV, look downward towards the bottom left side at where the left speaker grill is located. Reach behind the back side of this speaker and you will find a large round thumb screw. Back off this screw by hand until you can remove the whole left speaker grill. Once the speaker grill is removed you now will see 2 large phillips screws that hold down the cover to the projector bulb compartment.
After you loosen these 2 phillips screws, you can remove the plastic cover that houses the bulb. The bulb assembly itself is a small plastic box with a metal handle To remove the bulb, pull the metal handle straight out. The bottom of the bulb assembly also has two metal pins that fit into the compartment housing you just pulled it out of. Be careful not to touch any of the glass bulb itself with your fingers. These bulbs are very sensitive to the natural oils on your hands. It can drasticlly reduce the lifespan of the bulb if touched. Re-install the bulb the exact same way in reverse order as you took it out. Make sure you align up the two pins on the back of the bulb to the holes in the housing. Plug the set back in and that's about it. According to the tech, the TV will not turn back on if you forgot to screw back in any of the compartments as it has sensors that prevent operation if done incorrectly. If replacing a bulb remember to "reset" the bulb hrs counter in the menu program.

Mowjoe,
As far as I know bulb counter hours has been a mystery to all JVC Dila owners. Apparently there is no way to determine how many hours has been used. I have seen this asked many times before and so far no one has an answer.

You all deserve a comission from JVC...I posted a few days ago voicing my concern for some of the issues noted here. I was considering the Sony too and went to 6 different stores to look at the JVC and compare to the Sony when possible. You were right Jim, the JVC has a better picture. The sales guys at all the stores are horrible for product knowledge and even basic knowledge about HDTV resolutions and setups. Most of the stores also had scary bad settings on the screens.

What really sold me on the TV was this forum. With this info I knew to request the right serial range, and will save tons of time with my setup. Also, you all show that JVC service is pretty respectable too. Nice to hear the experiences!

TV delivery tomorrow, Voom install next Wed (sick of my digital adelphia), another JVC owner in the ranks!

Thanks for the invaluable info and experience all!

The life expectancy of the lamp is 6000 hours.
See the following JVC site:

www.jvc.com/support/support.jsp?pageID=1%26item%3D411

Mr. Lynch. Thanks for the parts crossover reference link, and the CD-rom part number.
I guess I'll have a second instruction manual. I should wait for answers on this forum before impulse buying.

Thanks for the response norcal. I didn't find the question asked elsewhere, but I haven't read the entire thread either. You can't do a search within just a single thead on this forum, can you?
That's strange that the hour counter can't be found. What is the "lamp timer reset" function resetting?

Some one commented that Comcast may re-broadcast the analog signals as digital. I sent an email to Comcast and the reply was "Thank you for contacting Comcast Cable. The word is that the analog channels will be converted to digital sometime in 2006."

Mowjoe,
I don't know if I have seen the lamp hours counter question asked here, but I have seen it asked on a few other forums. As far as I can tell no one yet has been able to give a definitive answer if this TV is capable of indicating a bulb hours used. I know they say to expect around 6000 hrs but mine barely lasted 300. The reset function is in the clock / timer section of the menu. The TV can determine if the bulb is getting weak or needs replacing. The lamp replacement message will appear on screen when you need to change the lamp. That is if the bulb still has any life left.

Thanks much. Once I set the Sony DVD output to 16:9, the problem went away. I am now enjoying undistorted DVD material utilizing all the available pixels.

Mr Lynch,

Thanks for the service manual. Once I get DVE I will do some checks.

The JVC tech I talked with said the warning comes on automatically after about 4000 hrs. It's just a dumb timer .. not a sensor.

Thanks,I knew it was for some sort of replacement warning. Since this timer can count up to 4,000 hrs to let you know it's about time to replace the bulb ....wouldn't you think you would be able to see how many hours have been used up until that point.?

Re: lamp hour counter
I called JVC today (it was really bugging me) -they confirmed that there is NO way to tell how many hours are on the lamp. He said that a warning will come up when the lamp reaches 4,500 hours, that's it.

Barry,

Most people don't have HDMI HT systems as they connect directly to the TV via component or HDMI cables. You'll have to pay a pretty $ to get an HQ HT system capable of switching multiple HDMI inputs.

Off to a bad start.

Posted earlier all excited about my purchase. BB delivers yesterday morning, got my requested serial range, Dec build!, off to work cause time is tight, come home, uncrate, plug in, zip....nothing....no lights, no pic, no noise. I tried different plugs, tried plugging it into a surge protecter that has other stuff working through it......nothing, nada, zip, zilch

<sigh> I called JVC - nothing they can do, gotta get a new one.

Called BB and set up a new del/replacement.

So far so bad! Hopefully have some good news to post in a few days

Ouch!

To Mr. L or anyone:
I had JVC-DILA for 2 months now. I also have the HD packages from my Cable company. The local channels including in this package are only CBS and NBC. Now, I realize that both ABC and FOX also broadcast some programs on HD.
How can I watch these two local channels (FOX and ABC) which are not parts of my HD package in a HD signal? Do I have to buy anything extra???
Please not that I have the HD box provided from the cable company.
Thank you.

Hey JVC owners,

Costco just dropped the price on the 52" JVC to $2600. I bought a 50" RCA DLP with HD2 chip, from costco not too long ago and can trade it in. While the RCA has an very good picture I've been very interested in the 3 chip JVC for some time. I'm very tempted to swap for the JVC. While a lower price can be had, the only place I'll buy non-mature electronic products is costco, because they give a very generous return policy, should anything go wrong. Anyway, I have a few reservations I thought I'd throw at you guys before buying. Maybe you all can talk me into it.

1) I Can not get a particular build date order from costco.com, but can return if defective. Are the bad build dates gone?
2) Looks like 1080p sets are right around the corner, like sometime mid-year. Any new word on them?
3) Is a better JVC about to be sold? (Resulting in the price drop).
4) Is JVC much better than the RCA? I've seen a great picture on the JVC, but not side by side with RCA. Rainbows don't bother me. I used to get headaches, but not anymore. Wife liked the JVC.

I'd enjoy hearing all your opinions.

Matt-

Your situation sounds similar to mine. I get a bunch of channels in HD though Comcast, but no CBS. CBS is broadcast OTA in HD here in the city. here is what I did.

First you need an HD antenna to receive the signal. I bought this one: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=210-262

I installed it in my attic, and when I want to watch CBS in HD (mainly NFL) I unplug the cable input in the cable box, and I hookup the antenna coax cable to it. I get ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC with it.

Thank you. I will look into this. By the way, 1. Is the installation part difficult?
2. Is it necessary that I have to install this outdoor?
Thank you so much (again).

Instalation was a snap. Plug in the power supply and run the coax cable to HD tuner (Motorola Cable box). You can use it indoor, so I originally had it sitting on a shelf behind my TV. It came with hardware, but I just had it laying down. Not long ago I put it in the attic to get it out of the way. It also helped a little with the signal being up higher. If you get a weak signal you can turn up the gains on the built in line amp too. If you shop around you can find it for around $60, maybe even cheaper. They were over $100 when I bought mine.

I too have been researching for some time, for the best value and perfomance in a new HD TV set (I'm still using my old curved screen, 27" JVC, RF input only set, that I bought 22 years ago, which I think is a testament to JVC Quality in and of itself!) and have come to the same conclusion. At this point in time, you just can't beat the JVC D-ILA sets for picture quality. I just ordered a 52Z575 yesterday (late christmas present to self :-).

Mr. Lynch, I'd also appreciate it very much if you could send me a copy of the service manual. My email is henkerhaus@ameritech.net. Thank you in advance.

Everyone, thanks for all the information and your experiences with this set. The wealth of information helps one make a truly "informed" purchase decision.

A question to anyone who has experience with OTA set top boxes... I live in the metro Detroit area, so I should be able to get several OTA channels, and am considering the Samsung SIR T-451. Anybody have any experience with this unit? (Tuner channel changing speed, display size/readability, ability to control it with the JVC's remote?) Does it tune analog as well as digital channels, or just digital? I realize that not all channels broadcast digitally OTA are in HD, just the prime time major shows. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Lyor,

I've noticed the same thing on just about every TV out there (including my 61Z575), and I'm starting to wonder if it's an optical illusion. Have you tried comparing to a "real straight line"?

I plan on buying a UPS, what is the minimum VA rating I should get for my 52Z575? I would still use my Monster HTS1000MKll surge protector.

I actually put a long level up on the screen and aligned it with the top and bottom of the picture to verify that it was not an optical illusion.

I'd recommend 500va. It will give you plenty of juice for the TV. I believe you can go also low as 350va, but that would cut it close. Also, you should plug a UPS directly into wall. They have build in surge protection so you would not need the Monster S.P. I personally use my UPS for my TV only, and my surge protector for the rest of my components.

Lyor-

what your talking about is called "pincussion". I know there is an easy fix for it in the service menu, but I haven't found it yet. How about you Ang?

Would plugging the MOnster S.P. into the UPS and then plugging in the TV and other components be o.k. or overkill?

That would be overkill. Since the UPS is basically a battery, you want a direct feed from it to your TV. If you plug in the Monster SP it might lower the effectiveness of the UPS.

JVC service rep came to house and said they needed to take TV back to their shop. It occurs from "rough" handling. I am on my second tv in a week and if I cannot locate a service menu fix, I will return it and wait for the new ones to come out, in hopes of better luck.

Mr. Lynch-
JVC sent out a new lamp & said it was probably just a bad one. It's seems to be working ok now, we'll see in a few days or so if it holds up.
The company that sold me the TV told me it may be in my best interest to order a new TV & send back this one, they think maybe I have a lemmon or something.
Any thoughts on this comment?
