Could you please tell me which TVs come with both HDMI and DVI inputs? Also, is it really worth connecting a progressive scan DVD player to a HDMI or DVI input instead of component? What is the advantage? Do you need a digital connection for the DVD player to output in 720p?
You don't really need both HDMI and DVI, although both would be nice. HDMI is backward compatible with DVI. HDMI carries both the digital video and digital audio as well as covers the copy protection. DVI is digital video only and doesn't carry the audio signal. So, now that you understand that both are digital in nature, then if you have progressive scan DVD player that has component output, it's output is analog and will be converted to digital by the receiving end. So, the advantage is using DVI or HDMI is that there's no conversion from digital to analog, then back to digital, it's just straight digital.
