Has anyone used the Hitachi 50v500 on a different stand than the SP50W product stand that's usually seen together? Will the Hitachi lay on a flat surface like a Sony GWIII?
I just bought the 50V500 a couple of weeks ago BECAUSE it is one of only a few TVs that doesn't have a fixed stand underneath. Mine sits in a raised carpeted alcove (14" high), which serves as a stand. No problems. Once you get used to the fan noise, you're will love this set.

David, other than fan noise; how does this set do SD programs? Do you know this TV will allow you to customize settings for each video mode? example - video 1-5 could have different color, brightness & etc... My friend has a GWIII and it appears it's one setting that applies for all video modes.

That's a good question, and one for which I don't have an answer. I'm still knee deep in user manuals for the whole system and am proud to say I can turn the TV on and change channels. The default settings seem to look great in any mode I've used to date.

Yes this tv will allow you to customize settings for each input, in fact it will allow you to set two settings for each input, day and night. You can toggle between these two with the remote.
I think it looks on SD material, at least for an HDTV. If you really want good SD the only TVs to buy are the analog ones.
I'm an installer, and have a couple questions. My customer has selected the 50v500, and will have it installed in a custom wall unit to be built, placing the set somewhat higher up than the factory stand would afford, to get that "cimema feel" angle of view. I'm recommending the Denon AVR 3803 receiver, and most likely 2 Infinity bookshelves(unless I can find him a pair of the old Polk RT5's!), and 4 Infinity in-walls, along with a Velodyne sub, set in a cabinet below the TV, behind grillcloth doors. The literature I have on the set claims the TV's speakers can be used as the center channel. Is the connection a regular speaker wire connection? I would also like to get some feedback on the sound quality of the TV speakers on this set. My next question regards the HD-SD format selection feature. I notice that this set allows either format, and in addition, offers an "auto mode", where I assume it can determine what type of signal it's receiving, and "automatically" display in the proper mode. Any feedback as to the performance of this auto mode? The Denon AVR 3803 claims to be able to pass HD signal, as well as being able to upconvert composite and S-video, to component video. My plan is to run video from cable composite, cable HD, DVD component, and VCR composite to the receiver, and run ONLY ONE set of component cables to the TV. The Denon AVR 3803 owner's manual, available on line, states that in the case the TV won't display the upconverted video, then a "video stabilizer", with Time Base Correction can be used in the source to receiver path. Any recommendations on a stabilizer w/TBC, just in case? Thanks in advance for any help you all can lend!

Mike, the TV speaker will only accept a line level preamp plugs, not amplified. TV speakers are decent for a TV, but small. All of the base comes from the sides, (loudness feature for enhanced bass). Not sure if the bass is generated from the same main driver speakers or another, but those speakers can't be bigger than 3 inches dia. Auto mode I believe you are refering to is the scalar. I'm not sure what the input/output matrix would be, but I know that the old Sony GW LCD would covert a 1080i signal, covert it down to 480p, then scale it up to 720p. Not sure if Hitachi does the same. Best work around if this is a true case is to have the input (sat, cable box, Denon?) set to 720p output if possible. Might have to compare each scalar to see which is better.

I've heard that the built-in speakers can be used as center channel speakers with a 6.1 surround system. Has anyone tried this and is it true? I have a 6.1 receiver and I'm thinking of buying 5.1 surround speakers and using the tv's speakers as the 6th speaker. Do you think this is possible?
TO Nishom : YES the TV speaker can be used as Center Channel But if you want better quality sound I would get a good Center speaker (KLIPSH)are AWESOME.

Thanks Albert. Another question: Is it advisable to buy a 5.1 speaker system and then add the 6th center speaker later on? Or are there any performance flaws with this setup? Any help will be appreciated.
