Hooking up a DVD player

I'm pretty clueless about all this (which will become quite apparent very soon).

We bought a Curtis DVD6500 'home theater system'. I have a few questions:

1. Can I hook this up without the speakers (at first) and the sound will be provided thru my TV? or won't I have any sound without the speakers installed?
2. I see that our VCR is hooked up thru the cable box. Will I have to do the same with the DVD player? I don't know what goes into the cable box and what goes into the TV.
3. I have it hooked up and I can see video, but it is black and white, with color trying to show thru at times. And a loud buzzing noise for sound.
4. Is it possible that I will have to buy a splitter to make this work?

One set of cables has a green, red and blue connectors. The other set has yellow red and white.

Any clue is appreciated.

Thanks
Jenny

A DVD player connects straight to the TV. Use the triple component jacks if the TV has them, if not an s-video cable or RCA jacks if no s-video connection. However it's hooked up you need audio jacks if you want sound from the TV.
