Digital Audio Output Problems on Scientific Atlanta Cable Boxes

Does anyone know whether there is a difference between the digital audio output of the SA3100HD vs. the SA3250HD and SA8000HD?
I had no problem with my sound on the SA3100HD(I had digital audio connected to my digital receiver) but get background static when doing the same connection with the newer cable box models. I am connecting to a Philips home theatre system...
