I've seen the reviews and read about the QC issues, but ... as a novice with a new DR-C500, does anyone have any (constructive) advice about what I should do to overcome the progressively worstening "incompatible disk" errors I'm getting?

I have the same unit and haven't experienced any problems yet. From what I understand, there is a ribbon cable that connects the dvd drive to the circuit board. This cable starts to loosen sometimes, from the circuit board connection. I have read of some fixes which include hot glue to ensure that it stays intact but that may be extreme. If this happens to me I will use a little electrical tape. I am happy with the dvd/receiver and haven't noticed any degradation in a hdtv signal using the component connections as a switcher. I would like to know what bandwidth these are rated at though, if anyone knows.
