Kevin, The chip is also my biggest issue, however, I wonder if that tells the total story. Samsung clearly is not as reliable as a Loewe televsion and how important are the other electrical components? Is the only thing we should be considering is the chip? In regard to price - I am checking again tomorrow, but I can get the Articos 55 for $4,600 - the price just came down.

Hi all, I just wanted to post some info I got today from Steve at Samsung today. He told me that the HLP5674w will be realesed in late October and no other units will be launched until q2 2005 (93series)that's in line with Samsungs decision to move all their new units to the new requirement of a built in hdtv tuner. Steve said the 5674w is worth the wait and the rummors about it not being released are false. I'm going to buy one myself and if I hear anything else from Steve I will pass it along. The info on this site is great and I wanted to update everyone with this news.

Richard, the Samsung DVD-HD941 player has the following features:
720p, 768p, and 1080i upconversion from conventional DVD-Video images (for use with high-definition and HD-ready TVs)
Faroudja DCDi technology eliminates jagged edges along diagonal image lines
High-resolution audio performance with Super Audio CD (SACD) and DVD-Audio decoding
HDMI digital-video output, including an HDMI interconnect and an HDMI-to-DVI converter
Discrete IR codes ensure that the unit will function properly with your other home theater components. I've connected my Pioneer dvd player (progressive scan unit) to my Samsung HLP5685W using component cables, and the picture did not look anyway near the HD broadcast. BTW I had the new HD cablebox installed today, and WOW!!! Can't wait for football!

No Way, thanks for the information. If the price dropped that low I would strongly recommend looking at the Loewe, I plan on calling my dealer to see if his price can compare to yours and if so I will immediately buy the TV. Is your price USD, CAD, or GBP? Go and see the Articos because Loewe uses the same optics as the Samsung giving it the same crisp picture but it uses a six rather than seven segment color wheel so the rainbow effect might be noticable to you.

Artifacts question.

Just got my HLP-6163 -- what a great picture. But what are those little 1/2" white squares that show up on the screen once or twice a day, usually when a scene changes? It's rare, and there are usually no more than 5-6 of them scattered on the screen, and they only last for a micro second.

Are those "artifacts", or are they in the signal (I have cable)?

Anonymous great post. I noticed that the 74 series DOES NOT come with the Cinema smooth gen4 hd. I don't understand why it's not but I'm going to call to find out...

Robert; I basically agree with your assessment; however, the Sammy 941 having Faroudja is redundant to what is already in the 5685. I was just saying that, in the interim, I am having no problems with the clarity of my pioneer connected through component on my 5685.

What I was really saying about the discrete codes is that I can't find HDMI nor DVI currently to program into Pronto. Therefore, to have all units turning on (0r off) together and seeking the right signal source is fine for now.

I just got my Samsung HLP6163 yesterday from shopsunshine for less than $3760 including shipping. What a good deal compared to BestBuy and Circuit City!

My TV is connected with my Samsung TS360 receiver with DVI cable. It's amazingly sharp with HD channels (e.g Discovery HD). The status indicates that it's displayed in 1920x1080i. However, I can see some level of flickering with normal channels (e.g CNN, etc...). Is it normal? It looks really annoying. The status indicates that it's displayed in 720x480i. I used to have Sony XBR 63'' TV. I didn't see this problem.

(3)Questions:

1. Can anyone tell me if there would be a video quality difference between the Samsung's DVD 841 and the new 941 (due out 9/30/04)on my 5685 unit?

2. Is there a difference between the DVI & HDMI video quality? Which is better?

3. Does the 5685W unit have the ability to scan at 1080i or will it max out at 720?

I've had an HLP5063 for a couple of months, and I notice on darker scenes that the skin tones do not look right. They look surreal. Does anyone else notice this? I'm probably going to give Samsung a call. I used to have an HLN507 and never noticed this skin tone issue in darker scenes. It occurs on cable or DVD.

Just a quick update on my Mits. was able to watch college football and a cubs game in HD yesterday. My wife is afraid I'll never leave the house! The PQ is amazing with this set, I could not be happier. Speaking of happy I want to share my success with the Harmony series of remote controls. I was using the remote that came with the Mits and it worked fine, but my wife and young son had trouble getting used to having to slide the device selector switch to turn on the AVR or other device. With the Harmony I have it setup so all they have to do is push one of the activity buttons and everything turns on at once and starts playing. I know this is possible with a lot of remotes but what makes this better then the rest is the easy to use auto web setup. It took me less that 30 minutes to have every part of my system working including some stuff that only I'll will ever use. If members of your family have trouble with getting all of the devices you have working I highly recommend the Harmony remotes, you can pick them up for under $150.

So, in a short answer, can someone give me the differences between the 5685 and the 5674. I am looking for differences other than the obvious physical difference from the pedastal model to the non-pedestal model.

The 5674 does not list what light engine it is using but states a contrast ratio of 2000:1 and therefore probably the generation 3 unit. The 5085 states that it uses the generation 4 light engine and a contrast ratio of 2500:1 in one piece of literature and as 3000:1 in another.

The Samsung DLP brochure says the 74/77 series will have the HD2+ chip, just like the 85/87 series. Also, the contrast is listed as ">2000:1". Not sure why they just don't say "2500:1" like they do with the 85/87.

However, it also does not say anything about the Ligth Engine, whereas for the 85/87 it says "Cinema Smooth Gen-4 HD"... Not sure what's going in there, maybe they are trying to use the HD2+ chip in a different setup (different color wheel etc.)? And maybe that is why they are having problems getting the 74 series to market?

That March release date is actually for the 77 series. It's easy to miss, but you will see that the release date is under the 77 series info.

With the pedastal models, does anyone know if you can actually remove the pedastal from the monitor easily? In other words, be able to take the 85 and sit it on a normal tv stand built into a normal entertainment center.

To my knowledge, the light engine sits inside the pedastal and there is no way to remove it from the TV. This has been discussed in many forums.

I AM CONSIDERING THE PURCHASE OF THE 4674 WHEN IT IS RELEASED. BUT I HAVE BEEN UNSUCESSFUL IN DETERMINING THE MAXIMUM VERTICAL ANGLE THAT THIS DLP UNIT WILL ALLOW. DOES ANYONE HAVE THEIR DLP SET POSITIONED AT A HEIGHT ABOVE EYE-LEVEL WHEN SEATED? DOES THIS CAUSE A SIGNIFICANT LOSS IN PICTURE QUALITY? ANY INFO CONCERNING THE VERTICAL VIEWING ANGLE WILL BE APPRECIATED. THANKS

The 74 series will release in late October and that is from a good source as I said in my earlier post. All other models will not be released until next year. This site that was posted a few days ago is great and gives you a ton of info: You can check on the Samsung web side for more information on 74, 67, 87 and 77 DLP

Also this is in responce to Martins post I just got this info. This is a qoute from an informed person. "It's a non-issue. We are marketing the Cinema Smooth in the 63 series and the 85 series. The 74 series is a hybrid HD2 engine with modifications using the HD2+ DMD. The color wheel is not a 7 segment, it is the same six segment used in the HD2 light engine.

Contrast ratio is somewhat lower, 2000:1 vs. 2500:1. The important thing is the picture quality is noticeably improved on the 74 series over the 63 series. I don't believe there is going to be a noticeable difference between the 74 and 85 series". Ihad asked the same question and that answer is what I got. It seems to be a very good model with just a little lower specs than the 85 series.

Football has started and I cannot wait on the 74 series. This board was very useful in guiding me to a decision to buy the 5685. Thanks to all for the input.
The question now is from whom for how much. It seems BB and CC are $500 or so higher than the etailers. Since the DLPs have some history of problems (from reading other threads on this board) I am thinking it might be worth buying from the brick&motar stores.

But I am stingy. If I buy online I do not pay sales tax (save >200), and I get a better sales price (save $500).

If it fails in the first year it is Samsung that deals with repair no matter where you buy it. I can get a extended warranty online(they resell from service comapies).

Why are you all always talking about BB or CC? Are you all dot com millonaires or am I missing something? Any good online etailer recommendations?

Thanks

Anyone have a recommendation for an online retailer?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

5 day old 5085, setup using component, no problems there, then went to DVI and SD broadcasts am having delay and lipsink problems, along with some flicker. Called samsung, they said they need someone to come out and install another board in unit, and reinstall original board when everything goes digital in 2006. This is BS, thinking of returning, love the picture on HD but this is just pure BS. No good answers on how this "new" board will effect my HD picture...........pissed

Hello,

I have had my 5085 for 2 weeks now. What receiver did you buy? I returned the Samsung SIRT-S360 receiver and will be getting the new Hughes HD Tivo box when the prices drop. In the interem I hooked up my Hughes SD Tivo box through S Video and was pleased to find that the blotchy awful HD channels look very good. It has to be an issue with SD being run through DVI because I had the same issues but was it the box or the TV? When I get the new box I will run both if necessary until all goes digital. Plus i will have the HD box purely for HD Tivo and the SD box for everything else. Good Luck.

I have had my hlp6163w for 37 days now. it was purchased from pc richards. on the 37th day the lamp stopped working. called pc richards. they want nothing to do with replacing the lamp even with an extended warranty purchased for a 5 year coverage. they have me calling Samsung direct. all I want is a replacement lamp. why is everyone giving me the runaround? pc richards will send someone to look at the tv first before ordering the lamp. said this would take 2 weeks. Samsung wants to send an outside contractor to come look at the tv. these people want to take my tv with them. NO WAY! any suggestions?

To all,

I have been lurking and commenting on this site for some time now, and although I was fully decided to buy the 5674W, enough is enough. With the waiting and the negative comments, even from people I know personally, who own the HLN series, I'm not taking a chance on a brand I only heard of a short time ago. Although I have always bought Sony in the past, all they offer is LCD. Sunday I pulled the trigger on the JVC 52Z585.

At least it's a brand I've known for many years, and they make some very respectable professional equipment. Wanted local bricks & mortar for peace of mind. JVC does not sell the all black model (585) through retail chains, only independent outlets. Using the information on the JVC forum, I was able to get the price down to three thousand. I added a 4 year warranty for $400. This includes an in-home delivery with set up, and if anything goes wrong during the four years (bulb not included) they come out to your home, pick up the set, take it back to their shop (all repairs done on site) fix it, and bring it back to your home. If the set is not a lemon, I think I made my best move. Went to see it four times at BB and the picture is outstanding. That's it, guys.

Jake: I too bought the S360 receiver, run via DVI to 8050W. Excellent question, is it the TV or the receiver? Being as samsung said a new TV board will fix the problem, gotta think it is the TV and this is not the first they heard of it. No problem with component connections,, only DVI. But do have concerns on the need to install a "new" board now, and reinstall the original board in 2006 with all digital broadcasts.....leads me to believe this "temp" fix will degrade HD performace. Any input greatly appreciated

I've had my HLP6163W for one week now and no lamp problems yet (knock on wood).

However, I have had some minor lip synch problems that others have reported. The confusing thing is that there doesn't appear to be any rhyme or reason behind it (HD vs non-HD channels, satellite vs OTA, etc.). For example, I have directv and the other night I was on DiscoveryHD and got the lip synch problem on "American Chopper", but the program that followed it on the same channel was fine. Most everything else I've watched has been fine and the picture is incredible so no complaints there. So it's hard for me to conclude that it's the tv. Has anyone really figured out what's causing this?

My Samsung HLP6163W is currently connected with SIR-360 DirectTV receiver via DVI. I don't see any problem pertaining to A/V delay. Based on the serial number on the TV, my HLP6163W was manufactured on 08/2004. I just called Samsung regarding this issue and they told me that there is no such known problem via DVI interface with SD channels.

Yes Samsung has figured it out. They have the famous "two board fix" as described elsewhere.

"Peas - what is this 2 board fix, you seem to be in the know"

OK,

The Samsungs basically have 4 major internal components.

1) Power Supply
2) Light Engine
3) Analog Board
4) Digital Board

Samsung will replace the old analog and digital boards with new boards which have the sync delay problem fixed.

Just be careful what you ask for. Many Samsung DLP owners have reported a decrease in the PQ (picture quality) after the "fix" but it does eliminate the audio/video sync issue.

Where did you get your info from? Could you post the link please? I called Samsung regarding this issue and was told that there were no such replacement boards. If it was true why would they re-install the original board(s) in 2006 when all is digital if one of them is an analog board? It makes no sense.

"If it was true why would they re-install the original board(s) in 2006 when all is digital if one of them is an analog board? It makes no sense."

All will not be digital in 2006 nor in 2008 which was the original target date prescribed by the FCC since it also requires over 85% of TV viewers to have digital sets before the analog signals are stopped being transmitted. Perhaps you should research that information on the FCC website.

Anyway back to your Samsung board replacement question. I doubt you really spoke to a technical person at Samsung. If you had done so you would realize there is a two board repair available. Do not let the CS rep at the toll free number stonewall you. Samsung is FULLY AWARE of this problem and are repairing displays throughout North America on a daily basis.

Back to your analog vs digital statement, I suggest you spend 4 years, get an enginering degree, then come back and have an analog/digital debate.

Ok, so you have no link(s) to post. Are you feeling bitter today? I am requesting info on a topic as a registered member of this forum and I am an owner of a 5085W, not an engineer. I did call the toll free number and posted what they told me. I don't care if you think I called them or not. You then berated me for posting what they told me. Why are you posting here if it is not to help people? If you really know all that you say you do why don't you join the forum?

Please read my post again: I said I doubt you spoke to a TECHNICAL PERSON at Samsung, I never said you did not call them. I suspect you got the typical Samsung CS rep run-around.

I have not joined yet because I just stopped by to help and offer the two board repair information. And to correct your digital.analog misinformation.

<sarcasm/on> Out of here for good since you seem to be doing so well fixing your problem with Samsung without my help! <sarcasm/off>

Peas, Who has a problem with Samsung? My set is fine. I called about the board(s) to see if I was missing out on a Mod that was available and a possible problem that has not cropped up in my 2 weeks of ownership. You are the only person to say it is a 2 board issue. The prior post states Samsung would replace A board, not 2 boards. When I asked for a link to some documentation on the issue you got sarcastic. Makes me think you are taking your best guess and are not on the inside of this issue in any way. You seem unhappy with Samsung. Did they turn you down for a job? Why are you wasting your time here on us non-Engineering types? We'll never fully understand it anyway. That is why we pay good money to have Engineers design us really great TV's. You should be creating the best TV sets on earth with all that knowledge you tout. Peas TV's! Not having seen the Peas line in BB or CC yet it seems that you have much work to be done. Back to the Pod for more development.

"Peas u suck! Stop spreading your Sony fanboyism here."

Reading comprehension issues as well TMSKILZ.

Seems like you are reading something into my posts which are not there, just like Jake. I am not a fan of Sony displays although some of their other product lines work quite well they are overpriced.

Personally I own a Samsung DLP, had the two board fix installed by the local Samsung authorized repair shop but only after contacting the Samsung engineering department. The CS reps gave me the same story as they gave Jake.

Note that I purchased my display 3 months ago so Jake's unit may have been shipped with the fix already manufactured in. I will see if the manufacturing dates are available for this possible engineering change.

Ta Ta all you happy campers,

Peas

PS: As far as you go Jake why do you care about a fix for a problem you do not even have? You sound like a worrywart.

I found updated information on the 97 series, which will be 1080P, 56W in the pedestal model, price is $5499-$5999. Projected to be Q1, 2005. Probably means Q2 in reality the way we have seen dates slip.

http://www.twice.com/article/CA451191.html

My current TV is 12 years old and this Samsung is the model I have been waiting for (1080P, no burn in, DLP technology, smaller footprint, better contrast, etc.) However, after reading the forums, I am reconsidering. Seems like a lot of issues or potential issues with each new advancement in the technology.

An option that I am considering is to spend under $2K on a CRT now and then in 3 years, when the technology stabilizes and prices settle down a little, spend under $4K (by that time) on the 1080P DLP technology. I end up spending less money overall, I have the space to support a CRT, think of it as disposable/short term solution, so alleviates worries about burn-in. Opinions?

Miser - Our HL-P5685W arrived last week and it's been awesome! We ordered this 56" from J&R Photo in New York (shipped to Dallas). Price was $3,999, while Best Buy was selling the 50" model for $4,299 (plus tax). This e-tailer has good ratings from several sites (BizRate, Resellerratings.com, PriceGrabber, etc.), and handled things well for this purchase too.

Hope this helps ...

Hi
I have had a HL-P5063W for about 2 months. HD channels from Comcast over DVI are spectacular. Other broadcasts are fair to good. I have noticed an occasional audio sync problem but have not been able to associate it with a single type of broadcast. I thought this problem was going to be fixed in the new models. If there is a fix out there, I would love to have the details. Also does anyone else with a new model have a problem with a loud fan. I thought that was also going to be fixed. There repair tech looked at the set but could find no problem. Thanks

Well I got my new JVC A week ago and had to go out of town the next day, so I haven't worked with it much.

Initial impressions...
Great TV for the price I got the 61" D-ILA for $3250.00 +300 or so for the 3 year warranty.
Great PQ (generally, I have been reading other forums which talk about the source not being consistent, But when it is good, the PQ is awsome)
The Cabinet is more sleek than anything else I have seen.
The ONLY complaint I have so far is that some shades of dark blue or gray seem noisy (kinda grainy) I am using the HDMI interface coming from my Hughes HD Tivo. I have read that the component input reduces this and actually looks better than HDMI. Currently I am using cheap generic cables. I have a variety of Monster cables on order. Once the installation is complete, I will repost with the results.

For those of you that were waiting on the Sammy HLP5674W like I was, I recommend that you get one of these and save yourself some money!!

I'm new to the forum but have a question. What are the main differences between the hlp 5085 and the 5063? Are there any besides the chip, and will there be that big of a difference in pq to justify spending the extra money?

Anonymous

if you go to Best Buy, they should have both models in stock. In my opinion, you will see a noticable better picture on the 85 instantly.

However, the main difference, is that the 63 is a normal tv set, while the 85 is a pedastal model.

Samsung DLP HLP5674W
Also looking into the Sammy 5674. Was informed by Samsung that it is tentatively to be out in October (as stated in other posts above). I also noticed on the specs provided in the Samsung brochure that there was no mention as to the Light Engine they will be using (Gen 4 vs. 3). However, tvauthority.com has the spec's listed and provide that the 5674 uses the Gen 4 Light Engine (http://www.tvauthority.com/samsung_hlp_5674W.asp). In addition, the DigiUpdate.com provides that the sets with HD3 or HD2+ chips will use the 7-Segment color wheel (I have no idea why they would go back to the 6-Segment wheel as they are trying to upgrade all their models). Probably won't know until they ship in (tentatively) October. In the end, it seems the sets are all becoming more and more similar and which set is picked may not matter.
FYI, I saw the Toshiba 52HM84 DLP at BB and did some research on the set. Looks great next to the Sammy xx63's but I don't hear much about them. Still going to wait on the xx74.

Query: What are people experiencing with digital satellite signal (directv) on their DLP's. Any of the problems mentioned above with cable.

Update on the JVC 61Z575 HD-ILA. As I stated in my above post, I recieved my Monster Component cables and switched from HDMI. BIG DIFFERENCE!! I know HDMI is supposed to be the best, but the Noisy, Grainy look I had before now I do not see. It was a PLEASURE watching football in HD yesterday. Also, my XBOX plays in 1080i which makes Madden 2005 look awsome. I am routing all inputs through my Marantz SR9300 A/V reciever. Now if I can just consolidate all my remote control functionality into 1 remote...but that is another story :-(

I just received my HLP6163W from Digital1234.com. Got it for a great price and it shipped the next day. No hassels you can trust this site for great service. Actually called me to answer questions. I tried to get Buysunshine.com to ship a set for 5 weeks before I cancled the order. Hooked to DirectTV via a Samsung SIR TS360 receiver. What a great combination. Discovery HD is stunning. As a long time customer DirectTV credited back $250 on to my account when I activated the receiver which I got at BB for $299. Bargin with DirectTV first and get them to put notes in the system with their promisses. No audio sync issues that I can find. There is virtually no fan noise and picture is bright and colors are vibrant in all ambient light conditions. Couldn't be happier.

I am about to order a 5085. Primary reason is that I have a lot of windows, all facing south. From everything I've found, next to a plasma, this is the brightest set available. I watch a lot of normal TV does this set do any delacing to improve the picture? Is it going to be bright enough?

Response to Fred64. I, too, watch a lot of standard broadcast TV and have been trying to determine what kind of reception I can expect from standard definition reception with Samsung 5085 or 5685. Samsung has this to say about model 5685: "Samsung DNIe Video Enhancer or Digital Natural Image engine, enhances all analog
NTSC and wideband video inputs for an overall
improvement in picture quality. DNIe by Samsung
improves contrast, white level, picture detail and incorporates a digital noise reduction to improve lower quality video."
In stores I have switched back and forth between HD and SD broadcasts trying to determine picture quality of SD broadcasts on Samsung 5085. And while SD broadcasts seemed ok, so far, I have arrived at no definitive conclusion as to how SD will hold up on Samsung 5085. I suspect that viewing SD on most HD sets will improve by increasing the viewing distance.

I have the 5685 and I have to say that the unit does broadcast a good sd pq using a HD cable box. It also has to do with the quality source of broadcast via hd cable or satelite. On some prem. channels, I can't believe how good the stations look. For example, the HBO (all 11 channels),Max( all 8 channels), Starz (all 5 channels), and ShowTime (all 12 channels) look great. I thought they (cable company) were broadcasting in HD. The SD network channels (non-prem. channels) looked ok. But you'll always get a less than perfect pq with SD due to the fact that the unit is a high resolution tv. The Samsung (5085/5685) are great TVs. I had a chance to buy the Sony 60XBR950 at a great price, but bought the Samsung 5685 because it had a better pq, and I believe DLP is the way to go. If today's and future movie theaters are using DLP formats, it's good enough for me.

Lots of info scattered around re: video and audio cables for Samsung DLP xx63 TV's. Seems to be some disagreements as to whether Monster cables are worth the money vs. other high quality cables. As a new owner, can anyone tell me which cables I should get to ensure I get the best picture/sound from my HD box?
Thanks for the help!

I work for an online-retailer, we sell Monster Cable. OUR employee-discounted price (I don't actually work AT Monster Cable) is at a 60% discount, and I can promise you that they still make money.

I am just pointing out that there is HUGE markup in this stuff, it is not as high-tech as they market it to be. It is all about ingenious marketing.

The cables might be slightly better than "no-name" cables, but definately not in correlation to the price.

So what would you recommend in the way of not gettting screwed on price but still getting excellent reception?

If you want good component cables that don't break the bank, check out the selection at audioadvisor.com. Plenty of great cables (better than Monster) at all price points.

Thanks. Took a look and there seems to be quite a large selection. I have a VCR, DVD, and X-Box, in addition to the HD box itself. What do I need to get all this hooked up effectively? (no issues with long distances between componants - they're all within a few feet of each other and the TV)

I guess my cable questions come down to this:
1. Is HDMI actually superior to DVI (will I notice a difference)?
2. Is Monster worth the extra money as compared with a different brand (again, will I notice a difference)?
Thanks!

For what its worth, I just visited my local Best Buy. They had Samsung 85 and 63 series next to the Mitsubishi dlp. At that moment, at that place, under those conditions, with those particular feeds, on those particular sets, I was unable to discern any difference between the 85 and 63 series. The Mitsubishi seemed ever so slightly better. (Full disclosure: I have a 19-year old Mitsubishi CRT that has never been serviced and never ever even had the picture adusted in any way that still looks pretty close to perfect.)

Can anyone tell me if all HD broadcast are created equal? I have CableVision HD service in New York, and I've noticed that certain channels, like Bravo,INHD,HBO, Max, TMC,ESPN, ShowT and ch.13(PBS) come in great (jaw-dropping detail), and some come in like crap. For example, channel 5 & MSG who claim to broadcast in HD. Is this due to the fact that certain tv stations don't always broadcast in HD 24/7? I've notcied this other day when I was watching tv and at 8pm certain channels were broadcasting in hd because the 4:3 tv screen all of a sudden became widescreen (16:9). I was considering getting the Voom satelite, but I live in a Co-op and we're not allowed anything attached to the building. My cablebox is also connected via component, not DVI. Does this make a difference in picture quality?

I know that locally (Seattle) there are a lot of variations in different broadcasters HD signal. I have Comcast digital cable and I was told that each broadcaster uses different bandwidths which effects quality. ABC looks alot better than NBC here. I've noticed alot of Primetime shows are shot in HD widescreen so that might explain the aspect ration change you expirienced. Most shows and commercials are still shot in 4:3 but broadcast in HD.

Has anyone seen or heard the Samsung SAMSUNG HT-DS1000 (speaker/dvd) home theater system? This system looks great with the 5085/5685 units, especially the subwoofer, which matches the tv's base perfectly.

Does anyone know which Ti chip is in the Mits 62725 and 62825. I heard that the 62725 has the HD3 and 62825 has the HD2+. Besides the PVR, do you think it's worth the price?

"Most shows and commercials are still shot in 4:3 but broadcast in HD. "

Not true, at least these two statements together are not true. If you get a 4:3 pic on an HD channel it is in SD not HD period, no exceptions, end of story.

XVXVXVX,
I guess you do not understand what I was try to say. Here in Seattle on Comcast we have 2 versions of of the major networks (ABC, NBC, FOX etc.). One is the regular broadcast, and the 2nd is what they call their HD broadcast. Both Channels will show the same exact thing, but the "HD" channel looks a million times better. No fuzz, no graininess, and the audio is in DD 5.1. I know it is not true HD, but they try to protray it like it is. Why does it look so much better? Is it the increased bandwidth?
Last night I was watching a baseball game on ESPNHD and it had the bars on the sides, so the game was being recorded with SD cameras. It still looked alot clearer than the same game on regular ESPN. When the game ended and Sportscenter came on (which is shot with HD cameras) the bars disappeared and the program was shown in 16:9.
What I'm getting at is that you get ALOT of aspect changes when watching the HD versions of the channels, but it still looks alot better even if it is technically an SD broadcast.

tp,

HDMI carries the exact same signal as DVI in terms of video. The only difference is that HDMI also carries the audio signal, whereas with DVI you'd have to have separate audio cables.

It's finally here!!
For us Canadians, I just saw the HLP5685 yesterday at Bay Bloor Radio (Toronto). Let me tell you, I've been reading these posts for months now waitng for this TV. Words can't do it justice. It was setup right in the front entrance next to a few Plasmas. I was there for about 2 hrs. No matter who came through those doors, this TV garnered more OOHS & AAHS than any other set on display.
One of the senior sales guys in the store, who has worked there for over 20 years, said this is the only TV to date he has seen that matches the PQ of Plasmas, AND best of all will stay like that, unlike Plasmas that degrade over time!!!
The Sammy was selling for $6499 (which is full retail). Best Buy told me they will be selling this Sammy for $6000. As hard as it is, I'm going to wait until mid December. BB said by then the price will have dropped to $5500 (not including any negotiations, of cource)
Bottom line, this TV made more of an impression on me that I had ever imagined. The styling alone is sleek, sxy, bold and the PQ FAR surpasses their predicessors with the HD3 chip!!

I finally finished calibrating my 5685 after 2 hours, and all I can say is, WOW! This is by far the best looking hdtv I've seen to date. The hd broadcast are unreal, especially sports & the movie channels. I've invited my family & friends over to my place and they couldn't believe how vivid the colors were, and how detail the pq were. I've visited CC, BB,PC Richards, J&R Music Worldwhich, and compared the Sony 60" XBR (LCD), Mits (DLP), Toshiba, Panasonic (LCD), JVC and of course the Sammy 5685. The Sony XBR & the Mits came close to the pq, but the 5685 just had better color, detail, and better black levels. I can't wait for the next DLP chip generation.

I compared the 5085 to the Mits at BB, which btw has an expensive hi def system which broadcasts from a harddrive system. The tvs were hooked up via component cables. I'm not knocking the Mits, and I'm sure it's great set, but it just didn't stand out as much (slight) in terms of pq. The Mits's reflexive screen was just too distracting. What I did like about the Mits was the stand/tv combo & the tv's speaker location. Everyone (customers) at BB were immediately drawn to the 5085, and infact (2) were sold while I was checking out the other sets.

I too, am hot for the Sammy HLP5685, but regretfully the Star Trek like design does not compliment the decor of my viewing room. Does Samsung plan coming out with a model with the same specs, but more more conventional design? By that I mean one that will require a stand?

Thanking all respondents in advance...

Reference the Sim2... that's an Italian company, and their site has several errors...

It is a HD2+ chip, with 2800:1 contrast (even that is misprinted on the site)...

All of this comes from the USA rep, who I met here in Ohio... it has the same projector mechanics as the 300Xtra (the projector I'm buying, with the hd2+ chip)... the projector is amazing, so I expect good things from the tube...

Most locales will have three channel numbers. One is SD analog, one is SD digital and the third will be the HD digital. If you are comparing the SD analog to an SD presentation on an HD channel the latter should appear more crisp and detailed. However if you are comparing an SD digital channel to the HD digital channel using the same SD source material and they are not identical I can see two possibilities.

One your STB can be manually configured to output the data stream at a different conversion on SD compared to HD. A 2nd possibility is you are using different connections from your STB. In other words it is not uncommon to use DVI or component cables for the HD signal yet also use an S-Video cable or eben composite cables to view the other channels.

From your post above it appears that you are not changing inputs on your display between the SD and HD channels so it is likely the STB configuration.

If you will check the manufacturer of your STB I can help you check the output configuration settings providing it is a Motorola box.

I'm still hearing from Samsung that the 74 series will be launched in October and the rumors about it not being launched are just that rumors... My info comes from Steve G. Panosian Director of Marketing - Digital HDTV & DLP TV Products Samsung Electronics America. Everything else I have heard from Samsung leads me to believe this is true. So I think there is alot of FUD being spread here. That's my take here is the link again that was posted with all the specs by another poster. http://www.samsungusa.com/pdf/DLP_Brochure.pdf

I've spoken to several customer support reps from Samsung about the 74 series. Apparently they have two customer service centers (in New Jersey and Canada) and the team in Canada doesn't have the latest information. Two reps in NJ have confirmed the release of the 74 series in the US market in October. Interestingly, one guy said that the contrast ratio will be 2000:1, which is less than the 85 series. He said it had to do with the physical configuration and that the light engine in the 85 series was in the pedestal itself. It'll be interesting to compare the two.

He is correct Tony look at the link in my post and all the Specs are there. It's not a good thing in my opinion....

Raiderfan- Is the October release date real? I spoke with Samsung sales who said Q1 05 is the release date for 74 series. Also is contrast ratio that important. According to BB it is not.

One has to read the specs carefully. They are at:

http://www.samsungusa.com/pdf/DLP_Brochure.pdf

On the page titled "Upcoming DLP TV by Samsung Models" under 74-Series HD Monitor/TV it states "The new 74-Series are finally arriving."

This probably means the October dates that are being discussed on the board. In the specs on the last page it also states "Mar 2005" for the 74-Series, but if you look closly at the specs its for the 77-Series with the Integrated Tuner (CableCard).

Hopefully, this will clear up some confussion.
74-Series = soon? Oct 2004?
77-Series = Mar 2005.

Anonymous, I got this info from Steve who I have talked with several times. All I can tell you is what he gives me I'm also a former Samsung employee of the DITD group and my buddies over there are telling me the same thing. I'm not an expert at contrast but from what I'm hearing this set is very nice and the picture quality is excellent. j-man posted the same link I did and the dates on there show the release dates of the new models. If I hear anything to the contrary I will post it until then I'm waiting like everyone else....

Also, based on the literature linked above, it would appear that Samsung has been unsure of what light engine to put in - the generation 3 (as in the 63 series) or generation 4 (as in the 85 series).

The light engine spec is left blank for the 74 series, and the contrast ratio is left at ">2000" which indicates it was still open to change. Sounds like the CR will be about 2000 if they went with the GEN3, and 2500 if they went with the GEN4 like the 85 series has.

They should have made this decision by now if it is shipping soon - the literature is just dated about a month or two I would guess.

I'm trying to decide why I should buy the Samsung HLP6163W instead of the HLN617W. Anyone compared these two and have any comments?

Not sure of the specifics, but here is a brief summary as far as I know. Anyone, please correct any errors that I might be making in this post.

HLP is Generation 2, while HLN is Generation 3

HLP has an older light engine and DLP chipset.

HLP has worse contrast

HLP has fewer colors on teh color wheel 6 versus 7 (This one I'm definitely guaranteeing true, but I think it is. SOrry if I am wrong)

HLP has some issues that were worked out in the newer models. I think an example was an improvement in the prevention of audio/vide losing sync.

I would definitely spend some more money and get the newer model.

If you are going to buy a discounted floor model, remember that teh floor model will need a new lamp very soon. 365 days @ 12 hours per day of being on = 4380 hours. This is close to the life of a bulb. This bulb has a high cost associated with it, and it might eat your "discount" from teh floor model right away.

HLP has a
