I am considering this player but comments on amazon.com suggests it played bad SACD sound. Maybe the DVD audio is not that good too. Any comments on this player is appreciated.

The reason to focus on this one is it can play both DVD audio and SACD. The video quality seems to be very good. It also costs only $130.

Conclusions on this forum have been Pioneer saved lots of money on the DAC's. Old 563/565 carried better ones, but on the other hand a f**k-up regarding DVD-A bass management.

563 has video converter 54 Mhz/10 bit and 578 has Video converter 108 Mhz/12 bit. Video from 578 may be better.

If the DVD-A bass management is bad, is it possible to shift the task to Receiver? Not sure how bad it is. A better player with both DVD Audio and SACD features cost $500 plus.

I've seen magazines over here state 27/10 and 54/10 for EU models 565 and 575, respectively. Anyway, they too claim the new model having better video processing.

DVD-A BM is reported to cut at 200 Hz, which is too high for many subs. Unfortunatelly, all analogue interconnect rules out receiver BM.

For some DVD-A (but no SACD) you can put 2-ch PCM (downmixed to 48/24) through coaxial/optical cable. Receiver BM is then available, but it's no longer full-scale DVD-A.

I mostly run without BM, my main speakers roll off at about 60 Hz, surrounds at 100 Hz. The loss depends on music and recording, often it is bearable. But my next investment will be full-range speakers.

Cheers

Now Best Buy sells it at $99 and has a free offer of DVD album. I will take one.

Has anyone compared between the Pioneer 578a and the Sony DVPNC685V? CD and SACD? I know the Sony doesn't play DVD-A, but I am mostly concerned about CD sound quality.

Also, what about disc reading abilities? Are there significant differences?

Thanks!

I checked the yamaha site but I found the low end DVD-S550 does not play DVD-A and SACD. If you click on model and it shows it plays both. But if you open the manual for this model, there is no sign it can play any. There is no 6 analogue out put connection either on the back. So I don't think we can get any universal player at anywhere below $300.

My only concern now is that the 578A does not play good DVD-A and SACD music and people cannot truely get those high resolution stuff.

James,

I've seen good critics on DV-563A regarding both mechanical parts and disc reading robustness. And rumours that say those components are still there in 578 as well.

Anyhow, only way to be sure is to look inside players. There is a forum on www.audiocircle.com where some "modders" discuss these kind of issues (Beware of technical madness...).

Cheers

It's sold out at BB. Mine works great so far. Only complaint is the remote sensor on the unit is under the disk tray. If your remote position is above the unit you may not close the tray with remote at certain position. I have to move the remote a bit lower or to the right or left, anoying. I also have to unplug my other Pioneer player since the remote can control both.

Do you know where I can download the owners manual for the DV578AS?

Do you know what is wrong when the Pioneer
DV-578A DVD Player will not play a DVD-R of mpg files that I burned after translating it from
8 mil analogue tapes to digital mpg?
Thanks,
MK
