Anyone know if hall sensors are standard in the DVD spindle motors? These are an older technology that I thought would be phased out by now??

Some use sensors, others don't.

Thanks! Do you know the specific vendors who do not use them? Have you seen any specs available?

This is from 2 year old DVDs or so. Sony, Panasonic and Pioneer don't, Toshiba and Mitsubishi do. Actually one of the Mitsubishis I saw was a Toshiba, couldn't figure out what the other one was. The three year old Samsung used a direct drive motor which is a far superior motor that I'm sure they don't still use. Hard to believe Samsung used direct drive at a time when Sony, Pioneer and Panasonic were using cheap DC brush motors. Haven't seen any specs, this is from DVD players I have worked on.
