New member Username: EmkmdPost Number: 4 Registered: 12-2003 | Opinions Appreciated: I have been looking for a set for a while. I went to Hi Fi Buys to buy a 56" Samsung DLP. But, the Mitsu Diamong 55" had a better picture. It also costs less, has no bulb to replace, Net Command seems cool, and will probably last 10 years. Sure it is 27 or 28" inches deep and is a heavyweight, but space is not a problem. I could not pull the trigger either way. I am leaning towards the Mitsu. I'll then put that set in my bedroom and buy the new Samsung (HLP) with the new TI DLP chip when they come out. Any opinions about either set. Thanks. -E |
New member Username: Gak22Post Number: 3 Registered: 01-2004 | Here's my take. The Mitsi is '90's technology -- proven, outstanding, VERY HEAVY, HD1 chip (old), RPTV (not very viewable at wide angles and glare). Now the DLP from Sammy -- 1st version was problematic, very light & thin (you can move it without a forklift??? -- having to reinforce your floor), HD2 chip (whatever that does for you???), about the same price for a 65" Mitsi and 61" Sammy ($5000.00 -- that is A LOT of zeros), IMHO better picture (crisper & real) and it looks better in styling. Even the Sony Grand Wega -- 1st, 2nd and current version - PROBLEMS, looks cheap with the plastic cap on the bottom and the speakers are crappy (30w on the Sony vs. 40w on the Sammy) but the 60" Sony is $1000.00 cheaper. I'm leaning towards the Sammy. One other set to throw into the mix is the 60" Hitachi Ultravision LCD. Inerested in what others think??? |
New member Username: EmkmdPost Number: 5 Registered: 12-2003 | Thanks for the input Gregg. I think the LCD is going to be old technology pretty soon. The problem with dead, or stuck pixels is real. THe DLPs will keep getting better. Then there is the new chip from Intel, but who knows when those sets will be out. The Mitsu Diamond has a great picture, more film like, and better blacks than the Samsung. I stood in the store for an hour and a half and could not decide. By the way, I thought the Phillips LCOS was far inferior to both sets. -E |
New member Username: Gak22Post Number: 4 Registered: 01-2004 | yes it is. you do know that it was pull off the mkt because of software problems when it first came out around sept '03. just came back to mkt around Christmas. scarey to buy the 1st version of anything. hey eric, look at the hitachi ultravision 60v500a (the "a" stands for the 2nd ver of the 60" - an upgraded screen and who knows what else). but dude, their track record with tv's is unmatched with the ultravision series - not even next to mitsi. the stand is overpriced but looks cool @$500 - CC has a neat stand for $300. AND $1000 LESS - my wife already has her hands on that $$$. I just read that DLP has a prob with fast motions... the hitachi ultravision 60v500a is really looking better. plus CC has 30days to try it. |
New member Username: EmkmdPost Number: 7 Registered: 12-2003 | Gregg, People just love the LCDs, I just don't see why. It is the LCD that has problems with fast motion, not the DLP. Try going into a Tweeter, Hi FI Buys, or Sound Advice, if you have one where you live. Those salesmen have a lot more knowledge than the CC folks and will be a big help if you have a problem with a set. I heard a saleswoman at CC trying to sell someone a Grand Wega, and she literally knew nothing about the set, at all. -E |
New member Username: ToasterPost Number: 1 Registered: 01-2004 | CC doesnt have the 60v500a listed, any where else i can get this?? is this set better than the philips lcos and the 61 Sammy DLP? |
New member Username: Gak22Post Number: 11 Registered: 01-2004 | you can only see/get the 60" hitachi at a CC store; not on the internet. the sammy or philips or sony or hitachi -- i feel all have their good and bad; you need to find which one fulfills your every need, want and desire since you are going to shell out about $4K. the sony has the bulb problem which sony is addressing right now. the sammy is untested technology, sometimes doesn't look real and slow on fast motions. the philips had to be pulled off the shelf because of software concerns around thanksgiving and just came back in janurary; very much more untested technology. and hitachi has always been the best with ultravision, not many people have complained about but when you look at all 3 (sony, hitachi & sammy - for me at least) hitachi comes in #3 behind sony as #1 and sammy as #2 for picture, overall (tv & stand - gen apperance)style and new wave look. just my opinion!!! |
HighTek Unregistered guest | I love my 60V500A - there's no motion artifacts like on flat panel LCD screens - these RPTV's use LCD panels (passive) that light passes through, it works a bit differently than an active matrix screen. The picture is super bright, razor sharp, and I couldn't find a dead pixel on my set or the 2 at the Sears I bought mine. 60V500 is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED |
Jensen Unregistered guest | CC has the 60V500 online - search for 60V500 (omit the A) - it's there. Hitachi told me that there is no difference between the 500 and the 500A, that it is a manufacturing code, not a model difference. |
Unregistered guest | I purchased the Hitachi 60V500A prior to Christmas at which time CircuitCity had a backlog of 25 units. I accepted delivery 1/24/2004.I've spoken to three persons @ Hitachi. Their Tech Support group was not aware of the bulb change for models 50V500, 50V500A, and 60V500A. There was an addendum sheet with the instruction manual. The addendum appears to reflect an ECO which changes the mercury vapor lamp part number on page 69 of the manual (PN UX21511) to a new part number as indicated on the addendum. What I find strange is that the manual's cover indicates the model numbers 50V500, 50V500A, 60V500A Note: there is no 60V500 non "A". I suspect the "A" suffix is to distinguish the bulb change for units in the field. I spent a significant amount of time at our local CC's reviewing and testing their 50V500 display models. CC Dropped the 60V500 and the 60V500A from their database after Christmas and the 60" is no longer available from CC. It's a great TV. However, I am returning my unit. Based on the unit I received (I think it's a design error/problem) the picture is outstanding most of the time. However, anything shot in the dark or where the portions of the picture should be "black", the lamp makes that part of the picture washed out and difficult to see. When you shut the TV off (especially in a darkened room) the entire screen appears like a blue fluorescent light for a few seconds then the bulb shuts off and cools down. This blue light is what's causing the problems with the black matrix. I set up a 32" Toshiba next to the Hitachi, compared the pictures and found that the Hitachi definately has a problem with "black" The Hitachi has a three position "black enhancement" feature, however, it does not correct the problem. I'm extremely disappointed with the unit. |

Anonymous Coward Unregistered guest | Mitsubishi's Diamond Series is a CRT RPTV, not based on any version of the Texas Instruments DLP chip. Apples to Oranges when comparing against DLP in that sense. The best DLP TVs right now use the HD2+ chip, with a 7 segment color wheel - produces excellent blacks and thus a better contrast ratio. |

gregg ucsb77 Unregistered guest | To start, I am a neophyte. Wrote my thesis in college with a type writer, only Univac available in the 70's. Therefore I rely on techies to educate me. I built a 24x22 family room with 6 inch walls. I bought a Yamaha 5790 with THX and 9 JBL flush mounts and a large sub woofer. I am a visual guy. I love plasma. A friend has a shop in Chula Vista who repairs 2 year old plasmas and sells them for $800. I will wait for price and tech to catch up. I fell in love with the Sammy 50 DLP and was set to buy it tomorrow. I went to Costco and saw a floor model 60 DLP Sammy for $3999.00. I watched it for 70-90 minutes (canned HDTV/Direct TV) next to 40"+ Akais, etc. No comparison. I bought it. COX cable offers HDTV. My Yamaha has the HDML signal processor that matches Sammys processor. I think the 60 is the only one in CA. The tech guy Robert (6'7"+)at Best Buy, Mission Gorge San Diego was awesome. 50 sammy dlp go for around $3500. Welcome to CA. Just a thought. Gregg UCSB77 |
