I'm a newbie and received as gifts a DVD audio/video player (Yamaha DV-C6480) and receiver (Yamaha RX-V2400) and have no clue as to what speakers to purchase. Budget is limited (possible to do for under $500?). Would be used for home theatre and the occasional dance night in a 900 square foot basement... Help!
You might consider stretching you budget since there is no decent selection of a speakers for the unit you have. RX-V2400 needs better speakers. Try with ENERGY speakers, as they are not expensive and yet have extraordinary sound quality. My choice would be Take 5 or XL series

try definitive technology or B&W. You can get a great deal on some used equipment. With high quality speakers, most have been well taken care of. The sound you get will impress you everytime you use the system. You do not need full size speakers. Quality bookshelf speakers on stands with a sub is a great set up.
It is not a point to be speaker fancy... Our guy does not have great budget for speakers. He is starting with $500. For that money he can hardly buy as SUB as you suggested.
Here's the deal....customer wants an entertainment center (5.1 dolby)connected to an existing TV with built-in DVD and CD. Cox cable connection and box. Customer also wants to use wireless speakers with the entertainment system and wireless external speakers on the pool deck. Would an a/d converter connected to a Linksys router be a better choice for streaming audio or using a wireless audio transmitter connected to entertainment system and use a wireless repeater for more distance? Does any of this make sense?
