Anonymous | We are looking at purchasing a Home Theater System that would provide quality sound. Ideally, this system would have at least one S-video (prefer 2), a powered subwoofer, and clear satellite speakers. Brand is of no concern to me as the quality of the overall system. Ideally the price would be less than 1k for the speakers and other components. Any suggestions? |
| Hi, If I were you, I would look at www.circuitcity.com for reviews and ratings to get to know about the systems. You did not mention if you wanted a DVD Player + Speakers Package or only Receiver and Speakers Package. Circuitcity has got listings from $170 to $3000. After you browse them, finalise the model numbers and search in the web for the same models. You might see a big difference in the prices...if you are ok to buy on internet. Check even walmart.com and kmart.com. They got nice mid range receivers and speakers too....for a cheaper price than circuitcty or best buy or fryelectronics. I'm not sure about interests and your limitations on the sound output. Walk in to Samsclub or Costco stores and see what they got. For $350, you can get a nice 5DVD changer with speakers HT package from Panasonic, RCA, AIWA, JVC, AKAI and Hitachi. But, there are really high end items and you can browse details in the following sites. If you are looking for recommendations on specific models...let me know. I have finalised few items and I'm going to buy them very soon when I move to a bigger apt. Consider Bose Speaker package in samsclub and buying separate receivers. crutchfield.com soundcity.com hifi.com tweeter.com outpost.com ibmega.com |
| After over a year of research I'll sum up what I've found. For receivers in the budget category I would suggest in this order: Denon 1603 Marantz 4200 or 5200 Onkyo 500 Pioneer 811 For a few more $$ the Sherwood Newcastle (the one I have is fantastic, the best musically in receivers I believe) I have its low end model the R756. As for speakers I would suggest purchasing Canadian made ones. With the favorable exchange rate you can't go wrong, especially if you can find an online speaker or you can travel to Canada to buy them. Purchasing CDN speakers in the US doesn't present the same value. I believe for value the best Canadian speaker is Axiom. Some of the others you may want to look at are PSB, Energy, Mirage, Athena, Totem. It will be tough to get a half decent system for a thousand dollars. Axiom has the Epic Micro system put together for $869, but you may put together an even better system using their factory outlet. The other option is to buy a cheap HT in a box, but ultimately I believe you'll be unhappy with it. http://www.sherwoodusa.com http://www.axiomaudio.com/cgi-bin/a.pl?speakers&1134&index.html http://www.denon.com http://www.marantz.com http://www.paradigm.ca Those are a few, the rest are easy to find. |
