Hi there.
I am new to this forum, and was hoping that maybe somebody here could help me. I want to set up my home theatre system in 7.1 in the living room of our new house; the problem is that the room is 40 feet long, by 20 feet in width, with an 18ft high vaulted ceiling.

My front speakers sit across the room, 20ft away from the theater chairs, whith the center channel and 17 and 10 inch subs. My rears are what I think are called 'Dipolar bookshelf 2-way speakers', which now have to sit higher then the fronts, on the mantle, because the fireplace is in the way.

I was thinking of putting the 7.1 speakers against the back wall, which would postion them an additional 20ft away from the theatre chairs, though in the opposite direction as the fronts.
Would this be an effective layout?

My receiver is a 'Harmon Kardon AVR520 and a Harmon kardon AVR100 that can be linked together for 7.1; this is hooked up to an Infocus ScreenPlay 4800 projection TV with a 92-inch screen.

Any advice you could give is greatly appreciated. I can also post pictures, if needed.

dude nice room!

that thing is huge!

2 to 3 times bigger than normal. (but thats cool)

your problem might actually be volume.
needing bigger more effecint speakers and more power.

i am running an hk525 reciever with jbl/klipsch speakers.
in a room 16x24 with an 8foot ceiling. and i'm able
to drive just fine.

but when i want to crank it up i have amps on all the preamp outs.
that power another set of speakers. (so 2 on each channel)
not conventional but for me it was cheaper then
buying huge amps and large speakers.

so maybe their is something we could do/try.

do you have any pore speakers or amps?

here is the stuff i have, wish i heard of timbre matching before i bought all this.
speakers are: abstract acoustic 150watts fronts
rears, rts-rs1 sound dynamics 2way vented bookshelf.
for the far rears i was going to use two quest 180 watt.
the center is crap but i have a new kinama kc2 ordered should be here soon.
the subs are a 17 inch powered velodyne and a 10 jbl also powered. do you think i need to have the bookshelf speakers at the same height as the floor standing speakers?

john bonare i am not familuar with any of your
speakers except the subs.

could you describe what each set of speakers has in
the cabinets and the sensitivity ratings on the
speakers.

and yes for best results tweeters and midranges
of all speakers should be as close to ear height
as possable.

what i'm guessing right off the bat is that your
system is not putting out enough spl for your room size.

so either speakers are going to need to be moved closer to listening position.
or more speakers and amplification added to enhance
what you allready have.

and i'm not sure what you want to do.
is their a budget allotted for more equipment?
or do we need to work with what we have?

if we have to work with what we have then the only thing
i see doing is moving the speakers closer.

Surround backs
system type- vented 2-way bookshelf
Drivers- tweeter 1/2" dual flared dome
woofer 5.5" I.M. polypropylene
Frequency response- 55-20KHz
Crossover points- 2.8KHz
Room efficiency- 89dB
Impedance-9-ohms (nominal)

Fronts;
Woofer- 2- 20.3 (8") PVA treated
Tweeter- 1- 1.9cm (.75") polymer, ferrofluid cooled.
Operative power range- 10-150 watts
frequency response- 35-20,000 Hz
Crossover frequency- 2000 Hz
sensitivity 1m-1W- 90 db
Impedance- 8 Ohms
Minimal impedance- Bass reflex

Far surround backs for 7.1;

2-way dual woofer tower speaker
Impedance- 8
sensitivity- 90db
frequency response- 40Hz-20KHz
Maximum power handling- 180 watts
drivers- dual 6" treated mica cone woofers
Tweeter- 1" soft dome tweeter.

The center channel I'm not sure on, I haven't got it yet. And if I had my way there would be a definite budget, but if I want to stay married I think I'll have to work with what I have LOL.

Would pictures of the room help?

i don't think pictures will help.

well your speakers size and effencincy sound fine
for a normal size room.
with normal amplification.

i think your whole problem is trying to fill to
large a room with a standard surround setup.

the combo of that ceiling being twice as high and
the room itself being about twice the size of standard.
you don't have enough speakers to fill it with adaquite spl.

to me you either need more speakers "1 more at each position"
slightly spread apart to fill gaps.

or you need to move them closer all speakers within
10feet from listening position.

if you can't move them. you start collecting more
speakers and amplification until you get there.
now you don't have to have any really fantastic
all your looking for is a little help in sound
reinforcement.
50 watts a channel,90db speakers. maybe a medium 2-way
bookshelf speaker all around with a 5 1/4 woofer and 1" tweeter.

something like these would work if you could get deal on 6 of them.
then figure something out for a center.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1051826208355&skuId=5378094&type=prod uct

klipsch speakers are highly effecient and the horns
really put out some sound for movies.

sorry that i can't be much more help then that.
but it's your room. you really need some gear to fill that thing.

well ive seen zetag speakers before they are some of the better looking
speakers ive seen. but i haven't listened to any.

i didn't notice a db rating on em their.

but if it's better than what you had, then thats good by me.
it's a pretty good size center channel, should present
a fairly large soundstage and with the rest of your
speakers at ear level hopefully you can make a nice improvement.

sounds good.
