Help with weird amplifier

I'm a newbie here. I was wondering. I have this weird amplifier that supports 5.1 but it seems like it doesn't support connections for coaxial or fiber optic. I have this dvd player that came with it. The way they're connected is weird since it uses several cables for left, right, center, surround, and subwoofer speakers. It doesn't connect using a L\R analog connection. When I start watching dvd movies, it does sound like surround sound. It this true surround?

Yep, your DVD player has built-in 5.1 decoder(s) for Dolby Digital and (maybe) DTS so you connected it to the receiver via the 5.1 analog jacks. The receiver may also have coaxial/optical digital audio inputs so that you can connect other DVD players that do not have built-in 5.1 decoders to it.

Ahhh...okay. It's because I thought surround sound could only be acheived using a digital connection like fiber optic. tnx
