I have a cheap 5.1 receiver (Kawasaki AV1000). I noticed that the volume is much louder with a Dolby ProLogic source (a videocasette), than with a Dolby Digital source (DVD). I have to jack the volume up considerably to hear the same equivalent volume when playing a DVD. Is this typical for these two sources, or is this just a consequence of my cheap receiver? Thanks!

It is a function of the output voltage difference between the two sources. Nothing to do unless you want to buy components whose output voltage specs are closer to each other.
