I am probably going to purchase Onkyo's new 770 HTIB, as it sounds good and fits my budget. I already have a Sony PS2 - is there some really good reason, from an audio/video quality point of view, not to use the PS2 as my DVD player ? Or put another way - would I notice a significant improvement using a dedicated DVD player ?

I would not use a PS2 as a DVD player. The older ones are not progressive scan, There are not too many adjustments you can make, and the picture overall is just not that good. Not to mention it runs very loudly. I mean it will work, but I would recommend getting a dedicated DVD player that is progressive scan and has component and optical outputs.
It's_me - thanks for your input. Being a newbie, not really understanding "component and optical outputs"....So I don't appreciate the significance of these aspects. But I do appreciate the time you took replying :-)
