I'm in the process of setting up a new surround sound system and have about $4000 to spend on speakers and an amp. I ventured down to Fry's and checked out the Polk Audio LSi25's and 15's, along with the LSiC center and the PSW1000 sub. In all the system sounded pretty good. However, I'm open to some other suggestions as well. I've heard manufacturer's like Klipsch, Paradigm, Boston and a few others being talked about here, though don't know which of those manufacturer lines to really check out. I'm open to other manufacturers as well. As for amp, the Polk system I listened to was being powered by the Onkyo SR805. Would the SR605 be sufficient? My room is rather large, about 32'x20' with a cathedral ceiling and carpet. The carpet will be replaced in a few years. Thank you for any information that you can provide. |

Do you have to worry about a wife approval? 5.1 or 7.1? I would personally look at Klipsch and a big bad subwoofer (more than 1 sub if you reallly want an impact). The Klipsch's are nice in that they have horn tweeters and are very efficient, so they will play loud and have good dynamics with less power. I would spend the majority of your money on the best speakers you can get, electronics are usually switched out more than speakers are. A nice set can last you for a long long time. These have horns and should play pretty loud (and sound good too): http://hsuresearch.com/products/ultimate1.html You can play around with different subs, like the ones from this place: http://www.edesignaudio.com/edv2/index.php?cPath=2_41 These are a new line of subs and are getting great reviews for their bang for the buck. You might think I'm crazy but their big bad 2 18" sub (A7-900)would not be too much for your room. You have a very, very large space. 1 of those, or fill up your room with multiple subs, trust me. I would also take the SR805 over the SR605, even though the speakers are efficient they still need some power for your space. Just a few thoughts. Lots of different paths to take with your space and budget. |

Something like this would be in your price range. http://www.klipsch.com/products/details/rf-82-home-theater-system.aspx As for Subwoofers? I'd subtract the klipsch sub...and add a SVS instead. I wouldnt consider anything less than a SVS PB12plus/2 with your room size & budget. http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-box-plus2.cfm Now you have two more things to check out |

For 4 grand you can do much better than Polk and Onkyo. For a receiver Look at NAD and Rotel and perhaps some Pioneer Elite. Mix any of those three with some Klipsch Reference series and your singing. Cheers. |

They will take some power though and the amp must handle 4 ohm speaker loads, so look at www.emotiva.com and look at their LPA/LMC Ultra Theater series for starters (you can spend a lot more if you want to move up-system) www.magnepan.com www.emotiva.com |
