Have a buddy who got a new 46" LCD and wanted to hook it up with a nice 5.1 speaker system ..... so I have him buy the .
(Genelec 8030.LSE PowerPak - 5.1 Surround Monitoring Active Speaker System with 5 2-Way 8030A Nearfield and 1 7060A Subwoofer - system)

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?A=details&kw=GE8030LSEPP&is=REG& Q=&O=productlist&sku=334444

I work in the music biz and love Genelec stuff and these speakers are so nice but have no idea what receiver to tell him to buy ... also is there any advantage to using the XLR inputs instead of the rca "s and if so what receiver would be the way to go for this .

The LCD looks great and the Genelecs sound great but I am so new at this I have no idea what goes in the middle to get the sound to the speakers and what is the best model and connection ... thanks for any help .

Donna, since these speakers carry their own amps, all you need is a pre-amp. This is especially true if you want to take advantage of the XLR inputs on them (and I think you should). The most up to date pre/pro at the best price I think is the Adcom GTP-870HD with HDMI.

Then there's the Outlaw Model 990. Even though it has DVI switching, it is a screamin' deal at $999. I think it's an old model about to be replaced.

BTW, I find it hard to believe that little Genelec speaker system is worth $2200. I know Genelec is repected in the pro/studio world and they're bi-amped, but really....
In fairness I have not heard them.

thanks for all the feedback ... he was going to buy a Marantz but it seems like the Outlaw Model 990 is a better way to go if he can find one .

He shouldn't have any trouble finding one. It is an internet direct dealer product.

Don't forget about http://emotiva.com/dmc1.html has balance XLR outputs if that's your gig..., or there's two other models they have for a smoking deal.
