After moving my tv a few times, id like to make a modular wall connection, but damn, just for my five speakers, id need a 10 port faceplate. |

I did this in my home and went through a lot of experimentation before I was satisfied. The picture has it right. Unfortunautely, the Leviton products (available at my local Home Depot store) have the connectors mounted on snap-in quick inserts. The Leviton are made this way as a timesaving product for electricians who don't want to spend any more time than they have to, even if this means that the quality is compromised. These inserts have a very nasty habit of coming loose and hanging loosly on the wall. Looks bad, and if your connection isn't very tight, they will seperate. I hate them. The picture, however, shows a solid plate (no inserts) which provides a firm mount for the connector. The ones I use are Decora type, rather than the Leviton. I heartily recommend them as they provide a stable platform for the connectors. Here is a source I used that is reasonably priced and good quality for what you need: http://www.partsexpress.com/webpage.cfm?WebPage_ID=251 Now, if you browse the index, look for the link for "Speaker Distribution" and you will find a double gang wall plate that can accomodate an entire 5.1 system: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=300-616 However, you may not need all of that. If not, just build your own like I did. In my case, I realized that my center channel speaker did not need to go through the wall plate as this distribution hub was behind my entertainment system and the center channel speaker is atop my tv. Addtionally, if you are not sending your sub signal through the wall, then you would only need a plate to accomodate two pair of speakers, something like a couple of these: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=261-354 Now, in my case, I assembled my own. It was very easy. I have a double gang box in my wall where I installed two of these: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=261-408 into which installed five pairs of binding posts for speakers (FL, FR, SL, SR, SC), found here: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=091-1207 and one pair of "F" to RCA jacks to accomodate two subwoofers (since the 75 ohm wiring was already in the wall for two lines). This ended up being identical to the pre-assembled 5.1 wall plate system shown above, only I had provision for a rear center speaker instead of a front center speaker (a 6.1 system). |

I've not had any problems with the inserts but I do see what you mean and over time the inserts may become loose, especially if they are manipulated frequently. That being said, I may have to revisit my decision and take a look at the Decora line you referenced. |
