Hello to all!!! Came across this forum in my search for HT and AV information. My story is this, I am upgrading my TV (Sony 36" Trinitron to Samsung DLP HLS5087W), and my HTIB (Kenwood VR-309 to Onkyo TXSR804BS receiver, might keep current speakers for now). Let me mention that I know the receiver might be overkill and I'm NOT an AV expert. However, I tried doing as much reading as possible and a big attraction for me with this receiver is the HDMI ports and I figure it must put out some awesome sound. It is for a small living room, but I'm hoping down the road I'll be in a larger setup so I'm planning ahead. My main questions are these. First, can I use my current 5.1 speaker setup with a 7.1 capable receiver? Does it automatically adjust based on what it senses is connected? Second, for now I figured I'd use my current speakers. If I can get away with the 5.1 setup, great. However, if I need to add two more speakers, any suggestions? Last but not least, do HDMI cables vary in their capabilities? The tv is a 1080p. Do all HDMI cables handle 1080p or do I have to look for a certain type. When all is said and done, my "updated" setup will be (I hope):

Samsung HLS5087W DLP
DirecTV Plus HD-DVR (H20S)

Onkyo TXSR804B receiver
Specs: http://www.us.onkyo.com/model.cfm?m=TX-SR804&class=Receiver&p=i

Xbox 360
Slingbox Pro
5.1 speakers from previous Kenwood HTIB setup (for now)

I appreciate any and all feedback. Comments on receiver options are also appreciated. I picked the Onkyo based on a number of things (as well as I could understand it) such as the HDMI ports, and the upconverting of all inputs. Again, I know I'm probably in a little over my head, but what the heck. If someone can suggest a quality receiver with such great capabilities for less (I found the receiver for $775. God bless 12 mo. interest free!!!) I would be MORE than happy to spend less money. Thanks to all and I hope everyone had a great holiday.

I like Denon for receivers. http://usa.denon.com/ProductDetails/3255.asp Without up grading your speakers you will not gain a huge difference in sound quility but it is a start. I like Paradigm speakers. http://www.paradigm.com/Website/SiteParadigmProduct/ParadigmModels/SystemChoice/ systems.html
