Is a different wire okay?

I recently bought a house with built-in wiring for a 5.1 system. The built-in wiring includes a coaxial cable with female RCA at either end for the subwoofer. My 5.1 reciever and subwoofer both have regular speaker wire connections. My questions: 1) Can the coaxial cable carry the signal as effectively? 2) Is it worth my time and money to buy and install adapters for the lines to and from the wall plates?

What subwoofer is this? Is it a powered sub or passive? What receiver are you using?

The reciever is an Onkyo HT-R340, and the sub is passive. I'm just wondering if the in-house wiring will work between the speaker wires.

I bought the whole Onkyo 5.1 system as a package... I know that I could bypass the in-house wiring altogether, but I would like to use it if I can. I'd like to know if using the in-house wiring for the sub will damage my system.
