I wanted to know if watts are a big deal in a reciever. Looking at the specification for the Denon AVR-2807 it is only 770 watts, so is it worth to pay about a grand for this reciever even though it's 770 watts.

How much do you want to pay for watts? And by your assumption that the Denon puts out 770 watts, you need to read up more on power output.
And no it isn't that big of a deal.
