I just purchased a new receiver. My old receiver had a subwoofer amp built in, but my new one has a line level subwoofer output.
My subwoofer is a NON-powered subwoofer.
Here is my dilema, should I just purchase a new subwoofer, or should I purchase a subwoofer amp.
Her are the specs on the subwoofer I currently have:
1-way, 1-speaker bass reflex 12" cone impedance - 8 ohms input power 200 W (music)/ 100 W (DIN) Output sound pressure level 88 dB/W (1.0m) frequency range 38Hz - 3 Khz (at-16dB) 45Hz-1 Khz (at-10dB)
Now I dont want to spend a fortune on this. I already spent my budget on the new receiver, since i totally forgot about the powered/unpowered subwoofer deal.
I looked around the web a bit and found a Subwoofer amp from a do-it- yourself speaker place for $84 bucks. That puts out 100 W at 4ohms, 85 W at 8 ohms. It has auto on/off, and a built in crossover. (yes I have to build a box for the amp) That seems like it would do the trick pretty well.
Or I could try to find a reasonable subwoofer somewhere (with amp built in).
Any thoughts suggestions, etc etc etc

You should be much better off with a separate dedicated subwoofer amplifier. Plus you can always upgrade the amplifier if necessary.
A low cost powered subwoofer would offer limited flexibility in upgrading, and would not likely sound as good.
