they are made in china, thats the scam... you morons....but guess what...all the other speakers are made in china as well...think about it..if you pay 200 dollars for some jvc or some other "name brand", do you think that is how much it cost to make them....no you are paying the owner of best buy the profit, the guy who shipped them, the guy who wharehoused them, the guy who pushes the carts at the store, etc...instead of the guy in the "white van".. so its not so bad...the only scam is that they're not worth 2000... for one, your greed took over and you bought them , and second if you paid over 250 then your negotiating skills suck..so suck it up and suck it easy. ya its a hussle and ya its dis honest, but so is buying things off the street...you were told that it was a mistake and that someone messed up...well dont you think that the owner of somewhere would lose the money on those "free speakers", so how honest are all you buyers now? were even, shut up and deal with it...two wrongs dont make a right...STFO

Real test and The real worthy things on speakers

I was reading this forum by curiosity, somethings really funny, I saw these speakers at a local seller. I am an sound engineer in montreal QC and my friend said to me... i dont have a 5.1 system wanna buy these? For 50$ Digital Research... wtf??? 800 watts ... yeah right. A 800 watts RMS Speakers set cost more then 3000$ US. For 50$ I'll test for you these nasty piece of wanna be noname brand speakers. These speaker are somewhat strange... I heard old stories about people selling studio reference speakers hahaha the just weight less then 1 pound. But these speakers have brick in them... the weight a tons. I will return will result and I will make you my final opinion. For the moment, I am septical... very septical... 50$ can... worth 35$US lol.

Real test and The real worthy things on speakers

I tested for 35 minutes and I can actually send my conclusion.

First, the real ohms for speaker magnets : satellite and center speaker : 4 ohms (8 ohms on the back of speakers), subwoofer : 7 ohms(8 ohms on the back of sub). (TESTED with a multimeter)

In second, the weight of speakers : the speakers are heavy, not for the big magnet of speaker but there is some metal plates in speakers to make in weight more. A real High Quality speaker is heavy for the big magnet in it.

After there is the build quality : some kinda plastic and they feel like rough but they dont. I hear some tiny pieces of plastics moving in speaker when I shake them. The plastic is cheap, and plastics for a speaker case has not the best sounding isolation. The subwoofer is made in press wood like the material we see on common room furnitures.

Finally the sound quality : I passed a full sweep to 20hz to 20khz(sound reference for human ear) and Low frequencies are passable. The lack of speaker power is quickly noticed. The center speaker had good LOW MID but lack of MID and HI frequencies made it some weird sounding speaker. The satellites speakers was the the same trouble(they are same speakers in a different case). The sound is not quite good for a musical enthusiasm but for listening movies they are quit good. These speakers will not blow the whole room by a shockwave, don't expect to much of these speakers. Like others says : If you paid 200$ or less... That's a bargain but 200$ and more this is a steal.

The sound qualtity of these speakers cannot compete with a 2000$ set of speakers like Klipsch or Quest or Polk Audio. Remember they have not a quite good response in frequencies and they sound boosted HIGH and LOW and the MID are a little weak.

Personnaly i'll put these speakers at my parents cottage and for the time my father will listen to the TV with them, my father will be happy. If you want a quick idea of the price/quality range : they sound like a Curtis/GE/Citizen/Durabrand or a cheap home theater that you would buy at Wal Mart. If you want these, take it to Wal Mart and do not encourage people like Mr.White Van that is not offering warranty for the product. Dont pay more then 100$US or 150$Can for these piece of noname things. Thank you.

Well this thing is still going on, on the jobsite yesterday van pulls up "Hey buddy" got these left over surround sound systems from the job had 9 only used 6 etc..., sell them to you for $450.00 they're a 1500 dollar system. guess I got lucky in a way told him I had 100 bucks take it or leave it, Ill be inside working. Sure enough about 5 min later here he came "Cant you go to an ATM or is there a bank near by" O sure Im working here take the 100 bucks or take a hike. Well he took the 100, so gonna hook them up in the grandaughters bedroom see what happens, she'll probably love them just for the remote controll. She's 13 as long as its loud its fine.
I kept asking the guy whats your boss gonna say when he bills for 6 systems and there's 9 gone? O no there already paid for the guy says, which doesnt make since, then whats the end buyer gonna say. The longer you talk to the guy the more bs and lies you can tell he's throwing around, after about 5 min he starts contradicting himself every other sentence. But o well there mine now, interesting forum though starting looking on the net to see what I could find out about these things.
Soooo Vvvveeerrrryyy interesting oh yea this was in Tampa, Fl

same thing paid $200.00 hooked them up they sound better that my sony speakers dont think i got f#@%ed too bad... as far as hooking them up you take your front left and right channles plug them in to the input left/right that powers your sub since you have 2 speakers in the sub encloseure the left/right powers the top/bottom. and the left/right out is your left/right front channels for the surround speakers, center channel and rear get hooked up like normal. also if you want you could probably take the sub-out from your reciever and plug it in to the input on your sub and bridge to the other input l===r and hook up everything else like normal. Good luck.

WOW thank god I found you guys!

I have been looking for like an hour on the internet for a retail price on this "Digital Research". I guess I'm the latest person scammed.

I paid 600$ Canadian for these "2" sets of home theatre speakers. Man do I feel bad now, i threw my money away like an idiot.

I saw plenty of fishy things about it, but the guy had magazines, business cards, photo ID, warranty, man everything you can think of!

I guess these guys are gradually moving up North trying to get more idiots like me. I got nailed here in Canada. If I ever see this guy again in the street I will beat his carcass down like to no end.

He was a short stubby fat looking guy, mid 20's going bald at the sides with this hickish way to him and high pitched voice.

Anyway I'm going to the police tomorrow and I'm going to try and do something about this, people, are we just going to let him take out money? Go to the police right now and let's get this arhhhhhh I wish I could swear on this forum!

Hey "Screwed Hard", I noticed you posted about getting jipped in London Ontario, well me too!

The same description with the name Tim, It's the same guy! You got nailed in late February and I got nailed in late March.

The guy comes around the same place, we need to get together man, I'm going to the police tomorrow and you should contact me so we can get together.

I got a number for one of these guys scamming, I called it and the guy wanted to sell me one over the phone! We can get these guys man. The cops can get a trace on that too easy.

And for you and anybody else, we got a phone number of one of them, obviously they have a wide network but now we got one of them and we can get the rest. This is not about money, it's about PRIDE. I'm going to get them on something, fraud, tax evasion, business license; they have got to be doing something illegal. If you want to take them to court or just want to get back at them then send me off an e-mail and I will keep it on file until I do take this scum to court. The e-mail I just created is:

digitalresearchscamed@yahoo.ca

Also any information you might have on this scum would be most appreciative, anything that can help me get a hold of one of them and reveal the location of this Tim would be awesome.

And Tim buddy this post is for you because I know you are probably monitoring forums like this because you take pride in your work. First thing you're not that good, yes you got me and even tough I hate throwing away money that is money I can live without and that's why I took the risk on the systems.
Second, you talk way to fast when doing your pitch and you constantly reverse and contradict yourself. Third, your ugly, I'm sorry but that is the plain truth and if you scam enough people I recommend plastic surgery. Forth, your magazine, which is what really sold me because as you noticed I was never really interest until you showed me it, has mismatching retail prices between the box and the mag.
Man buddy I'm going to do everything possible to put you out of business, and get my money back.
And if you have any stones, you'll meet me at the spot we first met. I park there every morning at around 8:30 A.M and leave almost every afternoon at 2:15 A.M. Your probably too much of a wuss to meet me face-to-face but I hope you do.

I can only laugh at myself after paying $200 for my Audioline Home Theatre System + $20 for beer money to the two, white fat F%@Ks that sold me the system, and then coming home to read the stories about how gullible we all are! Unbelievable. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. They were driving a white Ford or Dodge with license # 624BNW. Anyone feel free to f%&k them up when they see them.

I got suckered years ago with the same crap ... literally a white van and 2 guys with one hell of a sales pitch. Back then they called the speakers Audio Tech with (what I now know are ridiculous) outrageous specs. I can't believe these guys are still getting away with it. Believe it or not I still have those piece of crap, particle board, crossover-less wastes of space packed away in the basement.

And Roy, about Streem ... I can definitely tell you these speakers kick mother lovin a**. I purchased the ht808 set and recently added an additional set of rears and I haven't heard anything anywhere near this price range that compares. To sum Streem up in one word: "WOW"!

Organised crime syndicates??? How do they recruit these guys??? They seem to be all over the continent with the same product and the same story... how come it's so harfd to track down the source of all of this??? Who is making this stuff??? who is packaging it??? Who is recruiting and training these guys??? A coupla guys in here say they used to run this scam.... fess up for the rest of us.... how does it work.. who is behind it???

va, no offence but either you are uneducated or you are somehow affiliated with a less than respectable speaker company and spend your whole day online bashing other companies products ... as everyone knows that kind of underhanded practice goes on way too much on the Internet.

And no specs!??! What are you talking about? Maybe you should do a little more studying so you'll know when you are looking at a products technical specs. Streem and Bose and many other top speaker manufactures publish plenty of specs on their products.

Web surfers beware of the tons of crap being slung around by brainless bafoons who have nothing better to do.

va
Unregistered guest
Davey - pls show me where the products' specs are, on the Streem website.(http://www.streemspeakers.com)
And I mean technical specs (frequency response, plots of db against Hz), and not "word reviews" that can easily be made up.

I am an engineer by training and can be convinced by/with hard data.

I am not affiliated with any speaker company. At home I use a Hsu system and an Infinity sub (both bought at a CompUSA firesale at Christmas).

I just paid $400CDN for the 6 piece set. My curiousity lead me to go on the internet to see what i could find out about the speakers and i came across this website. Now i feel like an idiot!!! I'd like to know what magazine they are showing the speakers in because that is what convinced me to make the purchase.

Yeah, same story, only this was a guy and a broad,NW Suburban Chicago, guess they're up here now. Don't sound to bad for the $$'s - $200.00
Just wish they'd tell the truth, would probably sell more. Box says $1999.00 what a dummy I am.
Well, I'll spread the word about them with t-shirts that I'll print warning others whenever I'm at the mall or other locations they probably frequent.
See
"http://photo-shirts.com/digital_research.html" if you're interested in helping spread the word by purchasing a tee yourself.

I worked for Platinum Audio Concepts in Baltimore, MD for about 3 weeks...Definatly a scam: do not buy these speakers. My boss bought them for about $50 bucks a piece and the pay in on them is $200. We drove around in shitty mini vans with no AC all over Maryland for 10 hours a day telling everyone that "we deliver for our boss, who installs home theater systems in million dollar houses, and someone messed up at the wharehouse and put a few extra's on the truck..." THe wharehouse is located off of Landsdowne road.

MY friend just bought a set for 100, don't know if it will work out, but it has no receiver or anything, and the install instructions are screwed. Pissed off right now.

Tempe AZ- Food City parking lot at Hardy and Baseline. Same pitch..."wharehouse fucked up etc...". I guess I should feel fortunate only lost $100. The guy goes by the name Tim grey jeep cherokee AZ license plate: 872 MDM. Said he came up from tucson, he got me while i was buying my dad a father's day gift and convinced me to score him a surround sound system instead.

This whole thread is hilarious!!!!!!!!!
This post by the cold facts (Sunday, March 13, 2005) was definitely the best, and the most insightful one of all:

they are made in china, thats the scam... you morons....but guess what...all the other speakers are made in china as well...think about it..if you pay 200 dollars for some jvc or some other "name brand", do you think that is how much it cost to make them....no you are paying the owner of best buy the profit, the guy who shipped them, the guy who wharehoused them, the guy who pushes the carts at the store, etc...instead of the guy in the "white van".. so its not so bad...the only scam is that they're not worth 2000... for one, your greed took over and you bought them , and second if you paid over 250 then your negotiating skills suck..so suck it up and suck it easy. ya its a hussle and ya its dis honest, but so is buying things off the street...you were told that it was a mistake and that someone messed up...well dont you think that the owner of somewhere would lose the money on those "free speakers", so how honest are all you buyers now? were even, shut up and deal with it...two wrongs dont make a right...STFO

Hey, here's the deal, if you don't like your new Digital Doggs Theatre Research BS towers then stop crying and give 'em to charity. I saw a set the other day at a Salvation Army thrift store.

Duluth, Georgia, gas station. Yeah, I've been reading a lot of these things and I got ripped too. I thought these guys wanted to do more than just sell speakers. I thought they wanted my wallet or my life. I made the mistake of saying that I only had "200 dollars". I think it's a little funny that I knew that these guys weren't selling legitimate speakers, but I couldn't say no to these guys! They told me, "you better buy these damn speakers!". And they harassed me and knocked on the window of my car when I was about to leave. It seemed to me that they were not saying directly, but they would bring harm if I didn't purchase the speakers. The only problem with calling the police was that if I did that, then the police would come, then they would say that they didn't hit me or anything and after the policeman would leave. So the last thing that I thought was that they would follow me and take all of my money after they left or worse. So, I gave him my 200 dollars and just hoped that they would leave. They showed me their fake driver's license, "Larry Kaiser" it showed and he was from Tenessee and it looked fake but I believed him anyway. Afterwards, he gave me his fake address at the place he said he worked at: "125 West Paces Ferry Road, Atlanta, Georgia", which was a company named Soundivision. They were driving in a tan Chevy Taho with the passenger side of the door that said "soundivision". I asked them, "if you think that they're worth so much, why don't you just sell them on ebay?". He told me that it's because he "lived in Kennesaw, GA". I thought to myself, "you can sell it anywhere that has a post office". The first guy said he had to go back to work, the other guy said he had to get home. I think that it got to a point where I knew that he was selling bad speakers and they knew that I knew and I didn't have much of a choice but to give them the money. When I think about it, I don't think that I would call the police because I think that they would have tried to find out where I live or there would be more trouble. One other guy's name is "Bob" and I didn't catch his last name. "Larry Kaiser"(sounds Jewish, but he ain't Jewish) was wearing a generic cap, a little pale-skinned, brown hair, blue eyes, skinny, about 220, 6'3, big chin, white t-shirt with a blue logo and lettering that says soundivision. The other guy, "Bob" was about 5'8", 240, big belly, brownish skin, but still a white guy, brown eyes, dark brown hair, also wearing blue jeans, white t-shirt with that soundivision logo. He gave me an illigitimate receipt that referenced hollywood, CA. I also made sure that the guy would come into the Chevron gas station with me so that the cameras could catch what he was wearing and what he looked like. Unfortunately, he didn't turn around and look at the camera at the gas station. Just watch out for these guys because it seems that they could not take no for an answer.

Well at least now i don't feel that bad about it. Guess I'll try to pawn them for as much as I can get but dang, I feel stupid. Just have to listen to old quotes to feel good though, if you learned your lesson then it wasn't completely worthless. Granted I dont know if this lesson was worth 200 simoleans, but oh well

I guess the only thing I can do is laugh it off and move on. I gotta admit they're obviously good at what they do, soooooo many posts here and im sure there will be plenty more to come. A few months back same story these 2 guys stopped me at the bank saying they had some speakers for real cheap. I told them no thanks but they kept on harping me just to look at them. So finnally I said let's see em' just to get them off my back. They didnt look to bad but I never heard of digital research. So they showed me the mag and then started to make offers. I said I dont have any extra money. Still they harassed me and finally after about 5 mins of bs I said fine ill buy 1 set but all i got is $150. they said ok and i bougt it and took it home. I knew that i was a dumbass but I decided not to beat myself up too much over it. Anyways, I hooked up the sub to my car stereo amp and it got descently loud. and the other speakers arent too bad. Anybody want to buy these off me?

My buddy just bought a set of the "$2000.00" crap for $220.00. He would not listen to me and he got burned. The kid said he would keep them but had to get back to the store and could'nt take them with him so I told him for $20.00 an hour we would put them in my truck and I would hold them until he got off work then he could pay me and I'd give them back. He looked at me like I had 2 heads and one of them fell out of an elephants but. So my buddy told me to quit giving the kid a hard time and I left. He called me a while ago and said he had been ripped off.DDDDDDUUUUUUUHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Hey all
I work for the Philly branch of Digital Research and it seems like a lot of you people aren't real happy with what we do around here, maybe I can clear things up a bit. We order anywhere from 25 to 400 of these units at a time from the manufacturer, and test every one before we send them off to be delivered. For every 400 there is between 10 and 30 which are defective for some reason, i.e. scratched case, missing directions, or just plain does not work. We give these to our delivery drivers as bonuses, but most of these guys try to sell them on the street. Its a great idea to test them out before you buy them, but most only have minor defects like a missing foot or something, but are basically still a 2000 dollar surround sound system. Unfortunately this practice has given D.R. a bad name over the years, but a lot of branches still do it. Give these guys a break, they work their butts off, all their trying to do is make a little side cash and promote their company. Well, just food for thought.

This happened to me about 10 years ago in Fairfax VA. I went for the scam and paid $150 I think. They called them Omni back then and asked for beer money as well. I used them for about 2 years. They were junk but passable speakers. Its amazing how these scams continue over the years.

Learned two valuable lessons from this experience

1) If it sounds too good to be true be very wary

and

2) Never buy something from a mother Fin truck of a van!!!

Face it, I paid XXX amount of dollars for a very valuable lesson. I learned a lot from it.

I got the scam last week in Ontario Oregon at walmart. These guys are great actors! I believed their boss story and overshipment. I think they sound okay for the money, but would like to pound these guys for the scam.

Absolutely crushed to find this site while searching for the specs of my new high end digital research-2800 5.1 series tower speakers. I fell for the same sales pitch and they had the magazine that proved they were great speakers and everything. I knew I should've turned around but kept thinking I was getting this great deal. Should've listened to my conscience. Per was said above...lesson learned to the price of $200. Happened in Bloomington, IN at a car wash.

WOW! I'm surprised to see these guys are still doing it. They tried to get me way back in 2000(in california). Same tricks..... Outside a bank..... Big white Van..... excess inventory the boss does not know about. Luckily the speakers were too big for my appt then... chuckle... chuckle. Or else I would have bought.

B.T.W: Any advice on a good set of speakers for my desktop? I always had the harman/kardon out-of-the-box speakers from dell. Basic stuff. Are any of those 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 speakers worth it? Thanks
